Structure and Properties of the Wear Resistant Coatings Obtained in the PVD and CVD Processes on Tool Ceramics

The paper presents investigation results of structure and functional properties of the hard wear resistant coatings obtained in the PVD and CVD processes on the Si3N4 nitride tool ceramics. Examinations of coatings structures were made using the transmission (TEM) and scanning (SEM) electron microscopes, microhardness tests, coating adhesion to the substrate with the „scratch test”, and the coatings abrasive resistance „pin-on-disc” test. Machining tests results and roughness tests results for the machined grey cast iron surface are also presented. The research carried out proved that depositing the hard, anti wear, multilayer coatings based on the Al2O3 and TiN layers onto the Si3N4 nitride tool ceramics with the PVD method results in obtaining better functional properties like extension of the cutting tool life, than in case of the uncoated nitride ceramics or coated with the PVD coatings and some CVD ones.

The work represents a new approach of preliminary surface treatment of replaceable polyhedral cutting ceramics inserts for significant increase of adhesion strength with deposited wear-resistant nitride ceramics. By this method the hydrojet treatment was used to repair surface defects occurring during manufacturing process of any required geometry of cutting inserts.

The paper presents investigation results of tribological and cutting properties of the coatings deposited with the PVD and CVD techniques on cutting inserts made from the Al2O3 + TiC tool ceramics. Tests were carried out on the inserts made from ceramics, uncoated and PVD or CVD-coated with gradient, mono-, multilayer and multicomponent hard wear resistant coatings composed of TiN, TiCN, TiAlN, TiAlSiN and Al2O3 layers. Substrate hardness tests and micro hardness tests of the deposited coatings were made on the ultra-micro-hardness tester. It was demonstrated, basing on the technological cutting tests of grey cast iron (260 HB), that putting down onto the tool ceramics the thin anti-wear PVD and CVD coatings increases their abrasion wear resistance, which has a direct effect on extending tool life of the cutting edge.

Abstract This work presents studies of the structure and functional properties of coatings deposited onto indexable inserts made of nitride and sialon tool ceramics with the required properties, i.e. high adhesion, microhardness, high resistance to abrasive and diffusion wear in working conditions of high-performance cuttings tools. In the present paper the results of the investigations of the structure, texture, mechanical and functional properties of the Ti(C,N), (Ti,Al)N, Ti(C,N)+(Ti,Al)N coatings were presented. The 80% increase in the hardness of the coatings in comparison to the substrate material was reported. Test coatings are characterized by good adhesion to the substrate. The maximum Lc load of (Ti,Al)N coat applied to the substrate from the nitride ceramics is equal to 42 N. In the studied coatings compressive stresses were found. The results of mechanical properties investigations, especially tribological ones correlate with the results of exploitation tests carried out during the cutting test.

This study presented the desirability function based on Taguchi designed experiments to solve multiple responses statistical optimal problems for the tungsten carbide/cobalt (WC-Co) coatings of high-velocity-oxygen-fuel (HVOF) processes. The eight control factors based on L18 arrays were conducted and the multi-responses of wear-resistant coatings such as hardness, deposited thickness and wear rate were evaluated simultaneously in the desirability-based experiments. Based on desirability analysis, the optimal settings have been identified, and the impacts of control factors are determined by analysis of variance on the multi-responses. Further, a confirmation run was conducted to validate the tests. Experimental results have shown that the hardness increased by 16.61% and the deposited thickness improved by 10.50%, while the wear rate decreased by 34.03%. It was clear that confirmation tests are greatly improved by way of the desirability-based multi-responses on HVOF WC-Co experiments, and these findings achieved the desired values on wear-resistant coatings. The proposed procedure was applied at HVOF sprayed WC-Co experiments, and the implementation results demonstrated its feasibility and effectiveness to maximize hardness, make a target of deposited thickness value and minimize wear rate by a HVOF.
