Recently one of the most significant research-field in the development of amorphous alloys is the research of the Cu-based amorphous alloys. The Zr-based alloys developed earlier can be replaced by the newly developed Cu-based alloys as the high price of the Zr-based alloys limits their utilization in spite of their favourable properties. Production of Cu-based alloys having the same or more favourite properties than Zr-based alloys is cheaper and this fact can promote their increasing utilization. Cu-Zr-Ti and Cu-Hf-Ti alloy systems – they are Cu-based alloys – have excellent mechanical properties. In this paper investigations of crystallization of amorphous Cu44,25Zr36Ag14,75Ti5 powder produced by ball milling (these processes have not been investigated yet according to the reference data) are described. In the course of investigation of the crystallization process, samples were heated to a temperature of investigation by means of a DSC equipment and the developed state was frozen by chilling. The investigation of the developed structure and to identify the phases formed during heat treatment, X-ray diffraction method was used.

The crystallization and optimization of magnetic properties effects in FeXSiB (X=Cu, V, Co, Zr, Nb) amorphous alloys were studied by applying X-ray diffraction methods, high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), resistometric and magnetic measurements. The temperatures of the first and the second stage of crystallization, the 1h optimization annealing temperature and the Curie temperature were determined for different amorphous alloys. Activation energies of crystallization process were obtained by applying the Kissinger method. The influence of alloy additions on optimization effect and crystallization processes was carefully examined.

Fe 78 Co 2 Zr 8 Nb 2B10-x Ge x (x = 0, 1, 2, 3) amorphous alloys were prepared by melt-spinning and annealed at different temperatures. The microstructures and magnetic property were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), respectively. The crystallization processes of Fe 78 Co 2 Zr 8 Nb 2 B 10 amorphous alloy at different quenching rates are similar and complex. The α- Fe ( Co ) and α- Mn type phases are observed in their initial stage of crystallization process. Hc increases with increasing annealing temperature in general. Only α- Fe ( Co ) phase is observed in the initial stage of the crystallization processes of Fe 78 Co 2 Zr 8 Nb 2 B 10-x Ge x (x = 0, 1, 2, 3) alloys. The change trend of coercivity is complex compared with Ge -free samples. The magnetic property of Fe 78 Co 2 Zr 8 Nb 2 B 7 Ge 3 is better.

AbstractIdeal sillenite type Bi12FeO20 (BFO) micron sized single crystals have been successfully grown via inexpensive hydrothermal method. The refined single crystal X-ray diffraction data reveals cubic Bi12FeO20 structure with single crystal parameters. Occurrence of rare Fe4+ state is identified via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The lattice parameter (a) and corresponding molar volume (Vm) of Bi12FeO20 have been measured in the temperature range of 30–700 °C by the X-ray diffraction method. The thermal expansion coefficient (α) 3.93 × 10–5 K−1 was calculated from the measured values of the parameters. Electronic structure and density of states are investigated by first principle calculations. Photoelectrochemical measurements on single crystals with bandgap of 2 eV reveal significant photo response. The photoactivity of as grown crystals were further investigated by degrading organic effluents such as Methylene blue (MB) and Congo red (CR) under natural sunlight. BFO showed photodegradation efficiency about 74.23% and 32.10% for degrading MB and CR respectively. Interesting morphology and microstructure of pointed spearhead like BFO crystals provide a new insight in designing and synthesizing multifunctional single crystals.

The interest in lithium-containing ceramics is due to their huge potential as blanket materials for thermonuclear reactors for the accumulation of tritium. However, an important factor in their use is the preservation of the stability of their strength and structural properties when under the influence of external factors that determine the time frame of their operation. This paper presents the results of a study that investigated the influence of the LiTiO2 phase on the increasing resistance to degradation and corrosion of Li2TiO3 ceramic when exposed to aggressive acidic media. Using the X-ray diffraction method, it was found that an increase in the concentration of LiClO4·3H2O during synthesis leads to the formation of a cubic LiTiO2 phase in the structure as a result of thermal sintering of the samples. During corrosion tests, it was found that the presence of the LiTiO2 phase leads to a decrease in the degradation rate in acidic media by 20–70%, depending on the concentration of the phase. At the same time, and in contrast to the samples of Li2TiO3 ceramics, for which the mechanisms of degradation during a long stay in aggressive media are accompanied by large mass losses, for the samples containing the LiTiO2 phase, the main degradation mechanism is pitting corrosion with the formation of pitting inclusions.

Titanium alloys are superior of biocompatibility, mechanical properties and chemical stability. The biocompatibility of Ti alloy is related to the surface effect between human tissue and implant. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the bioactivity of Ti alloy by alkali and acid chemical surface treatment; and the biocompatibility of Ti alloy was evaluated by in vitro test. Higher bone-bonding ability and bioactivity of the substrate were obtained by the formation of apatite layers on the Ti alloy in simulated body fluid. The microstructures of apatite layer were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the formed phases were analyzed with X-ray diffraction (XRD).

Zn-rich and P-rich amorphous Zn3P2 thin films were prepared by co-evaporation of the excess element during the normal Zn3P2 deposition. X-ray diffraction techniques were used to investigate the structural properties and the crystallization process. Agglomeration of the excess element within the as-made amorphous Zn3P2 thin film accounted for the structural properties observed after annealing the sample. Electrical measurements showed that excess Zn reduces the conductivity activation energy and increases the conductivity, while excess P up to 15 at.% does not alter the electrical properties significantly.
