In this study, the effect of various solution and aging treatments on microstructure and mechanical properties of an as cast Al-5.5Zn-1.2Mg alloy has been investigated by optical microscopy, hardness measurements and room temperature tensile test. The solution heat treatments performed at temperatures between 400 and 490°C have little effects on hardness while electrical conductivity values increased at the lower temperature because of dissolved atoms and vacancy rich clusters. Concerning aging, only T6 improves mechanical properties of the undeformed alloy, while aging performed on tensile tested samples results in a decrease of hardness due to accelerated kinetics and heterogeneous nucleation of equilibrium phase stimulated by dislocation network. Tensile tested samples of the as cast alloy exhibits the fastest recrystallization time during annealing because of the absence of fine precipitates and the high strain hardening.

TiAl6V4 titanium base alloy is widely used in aerospace and medical industries. Specimens for tensile tests from TiAl6V4 with porosity less than 0.5% was fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM). Specimens were treated using two heat treatment procedures, third batch of specimens was tested in as-fabricated statement after machining. Tensile tests were carried out at room temperature. Microstructure and mechanical properties of SLM fabricated TiAl6V4 after different heat treatments were investigated.

ABSTRACTA homogeneous mixture of Y2O3, CeO2 and MgO with a final weight ratio of 3:1: 2 was prepared by the alkoxide method. The powder mixture was then added into Si3N4 powder in amounts ranging from 4 to 12 wt%, andconsolidated by hot-pressing. Microstructure and mechanical properties of the sintered bodies were determined and compared to those of materials prepared by the conventional route of mixing the oxide powders as sintering aids individually in essentially same composition. The β-fraction (modification ratio) in same composition was higher in thesintered bodies made through the alkoxide method than those made through the conventional one. The room temperature flexural strength was maximized with 6wt% addition of the alkoxide derived oxide, whereas, 12wt% addition of the total oxide was required to maximize the strength by conventional processing.

Abstract In this study, Al-0.80Mg-0.85Si alloy was modified with the addition of 0.3 wt.-% zirconium and the variation of microstructural features and mechanical properties were investigated. In order to produce the billets, vertical direct chill casting method was used and billets were homogenized at 580 °C for 6 h. Homogenized billets were subjected to aging practice following three stages: (i) solution annealing at 550 °C for 3 h, (ii) quenching in water, (iii) aging at 180 °C between 0 and 20 h. The hardness measurements were performed for the alloys following the aging process. It was observed that peak hardness value of Al-0.80Mg-0.85Si alloy increased with the addition of zirconium. This finding was very useful to obtain aging parameters for the extruded hollow profiles which are commonly used in automotive industry. Standard tensile tests were applied to aged profiles at room temperature and the results showed that modified alloy had higher mechanical properties compared to the non-modified alloy.

There has been increasing interest from industry to characterize the different precipitate distributions in ferrous materials to account for different mechanical properties that are observed. For this study, two different heat treatments were chosen for the experimental S5 tool steel, modified to have 0.24 wt% C. Alloy S5-1 received 1 hour of austenitizing at 970°C, was quenched at rate of 140°C/s and tempered for 1 hour at 200°C. Alloy S5-2 received 40 minutes of austenitizing at 940°C, was quenched at rate of 16°C/s and tempered for 1 hour at 200 °C. In this relatively low hardenability steel, both S5-1 and S5-2 show mixed microstructures of tempered martensite and bainite (Fig. 1, 2). Not surprisingly, the slower cooling rate for S5-2 created an alloy with inferior microstructure and mechanical properties. Even though these differences in precipitate distributions, could not directly account for differences in mechanical properties, it is of interest to study how the different heat treatments affected the precipitate distributions in S5-1 and S5-2.

The use of titanium for medical and dental applications is on the rise because of their excellent biocompatibility. However, some properties of pure titanium are not sufficient. Alloying with copper can improve mechanical properties needed for dental use. A recent research on Ti-Cu cast alloy indicated that ductility decreased with increasing copper concentration, but addition of copper improved grindability and wear resistance, with lower corrosion resistance. The objective of this research is to study sintering of Ti-Cu alloys; their microstructure and hardness, and the effect of copper content to their sintered density. Ti-Cu alloys were produced via powder metallurgy. Titanium powder was mixed with copper powder with chemical composition of 2, 4, 7 and 10 wt%. Lubricant was added in alloy powder with 0.5% of total weight, followed by cold compaction under 254 MPa pressure. Debinding and sintering was carried out at 400oC for 0.5 hr and 1000oC for 1 hr respectively in argon atmosphere. Condition with highest density was found in 10wt%Cu composition; having highest hardness of 317 Hv. Differential thermal analysis of Ti-15Cu under N2 atmosphere showed exothermic reaction at 1078oC. Phase formation of the sintered alloys followed the Ti-Cu equilibrium phase diagram.

The paper reports the results of an extensive characterization of the Ti6Al4V-SiCfcomposite produced by hot isostatic pressing (HIP) to assess its capability to withstand the in-service conditions of turbine blades operating at middle temperatures in aeronautical engines. The microstructure of composite, in as-fabricated condition and after long-term heat treatments (up to 1,000 hours) in the temperature range 673-873 K, has been investigated by means of different techniques. Particular attention was paid to the micro-chemical evolution of fibre-matrix interface which is scarcely affected also by the most severe heat treatments examined here. This leads to stable mechanical properties as evidenced by hardness, tensile and FIMEC instrumented indentation tests. Therefore, the composite can operate at the maximum temperature (873 K) foreseen for its aeronautical applications without remarkable modifications of its microstructure and degradation of mechanical properties. The mechanical characterization has been completed by internal friction and dynamic modulus measurements carried out both at constant and increasing temperature, from 80 to 1173 K.
