Several Mg-4Al-4La/Ce alloys were developed and their microstructure and mechanical properties were evaluated. The phase compositions of Mg-4Al-4La alloy consist of α-Mg and Al11La3 phases. While two binary Al-RE phases, Al11RE3 and Al2RE (RE=Ce/La), are formed in Mg-4Al-4Ce/La alloy, and Al11Ce3 and Al2Ce are formed in Mg-4Al-4Ce alloy. The optimal tensile properties are obtained in Mg-4Al-4Ce/La alloy, in which the UTS, YS and δ are 250, 149.2 MPa and 12.24% at room temperature, and 157.8, 116 MPa and 27% at 150oC, and 99.1, 118.2 MPa and 23.2% at 250oC, respectively. The mechanics properties of Mg-4Al-4Ce/La alloy are nearly same with commercial AE44. The compression creep is lower than that AJ62 alloy.

The effect of Ca and Sr content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a cast AZ91 magnesium alloy is investigated. Ca and Sr additions in AZ91 magnesium alloy are expected high creep resistance. The microstructure of the alloy exhibits the dendritic α-matrix and the second-phases forming networks on the grain boundary. Tensile tests at elevated temperatures between 448 and 523K reveal that the creep resistance was improved with increasing the additional amount of Ca, especially more than 1.0wt%. From the perspective of grain refinement effect, it is expected that the additions of Ca and Sr to AZ91 magnesium alloy not only improve creep resistance but also improve mechanical properties at room temperature.

The effects of antimony on the mechanical properties of magnesium alloy ZA63 have been investigated. The results show that the addition of 0.75wt.% antimony can cause the formation of Mg3Sb2 phase and enhance the mechanical properties of magnesium alloy ZA63 at room temperature and elevated temperature.

The microstructure and mechanical properties of magnesium alloy AZ61wtih1% Sn addition has been studied in this paper. The results show that the addition of 1% Sn can refine the grain size and improve the microstructure morphology of β-Mg17Al12 phase. The addition of Sn can cause the formation of Mg2Sn phase in AZ61 alloy, which can effectively enhance the mechanical properties of magnesium alloy AZ61 at room temperature and 150°C.

Present work pertains to welding of ZM21 magnesium alloy using three different welding techniques namely Gas Tungsten Arc Welding, Laser Beam Welding and Friction Stir Welding. After careful trial and error method, the process parameters were identified to produce defect free, full penetration welds successfully. The microstructure and mechanical properties of ZM21 magnesium alloy using GTAW, LBW and FSW processes were analyzed by optical microscopy, tensile testing and Vickers micro hardness measurements. The results show that the tensile properties of Friction stir welds and Laser beam welds are much better than those of gas tungsten arc welds. The formation of very fine grains in the friction stir welded region and absence of HAZ in LBW are found to be main reasons for better tensile properties. It has been concluded that the ZM21 magnesium alloy exhibits good weldability in all the three welding processes and laser beam welding process offers higher joint efficiency when compared with GTAW and FSW.

Effects of Cerium-rich mischmetal addition on the microstructure and properties of die casting magnesium alloy were investigated in the series of experiments. The results indicate that a new phase appeared in the microstructure with the additional of mischmetal .The new phase Al11(Ce,La)3can not only refine the grains, but also affect the mechanical properties of the alloys. The effect degree was different with the diffetent Al concentration When the Al concentration was 8%, and the addition amount of the Cerium-rich mischmetal was 1.5%, the properties of fhe alloys reached its optimal values at room temperature.

The grain size and the distribution of crystal orientation have an important effect on the mechanical properties of wrought AZ31B magnesium alloy sheets. Because the AZ31B magnesium alloy sheets rolled by conventional rolling have a poor formability at room temperature, a new rolling technology of differential speed rolling is used to improve the mechanical properties of AZ31B magnesium alloy. The research shows that the number of twinning crystal decreases, the number of the core of dynamically recrystallized grain increases, and the grain size become fine and isotropy by differential speed rolling with the increase of the reduction and the improving of the rolling temperature to some extent. The differential speed rolling not only improves the isotropy of the basal texture and also improves the microstructure and mechanical properties.

The microstructure and mechanical properties of aged Mg-5.5Al-0.5Y magnesium alloy with Sm addition were investigated. The results show that with proper content of Sm addition, the microstructure of Mg-5.5Al-0.5Y magnesium alloy is refined obviously. The quantity of β-Mg17Al12 phase is reduced, and Al2Sm particle phase is formed. With the increase of Sm addition, the mechanical properties of the alloy at room and elevated temperature increase at first, and then decrease. When the content of Sm is up to 1%, the values of tensile strength and elongation at room temperature,150 and 175 are up to their maxima synchronously, 244MPa/20.07%, 217MPa/18.86% and 185MPa/19.15% respectively.

A series of Mg-6Al-2Sr-1.5Y-xNd (x=0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, 1.2) alloy samples were prepared and their microstructures were observed and mechanical properties were measured. The existing forms of Y and Nd were studied. The effects of Y and Nd on microstructure and mechanical properties of AJ62 alloy were investigated. The results show that the main existing forms of Y and Nd in AJ62 alloy are Al2Y and Al2Nd. The combined addition of rare earth Y and Nd can refine α-Mg matrix obviously and reduce the amount of the β-Mg17Al12phases; after solid solution treatment, the tensile strength of the alloys rise first and fall later with increasing content of Nd. When the content of Nd is about 0.6%wt, the values of tensile strengthes are up to the maximum both at room temperature and at 448 K.
