The effects of antimony on the mechanical properties of magnesium alloy ZA63 have been investigated. The results show that the addition of 0.75wt.% antimony can cause the formation of Mg3Sb2 phase and enhance the mechanical properties of magnesium alloy ZA63 at room temperature and elevated temperature.

The microstructure and mechanical properties of aged Mg-5.5Al-0.5Y magnesium alloy with Sm addition were investigated. The results show that with proper content of Sm addition, the microstructure of Mg-5.5Al-0.5Y magnesium alloy is refined obviously. The quantity of β-Mg17Al12 phase is reduced, and Al2Sm particle phase is formed. With the increase of Sm addition, the mechanical properties of the alloy at room and elevated temperature increase at first, and then decrease. When the content of Sm is up to 1%, the values of tensile strength and elongation at room temperature,150 and 175 are up to their maxima synchronously, 244MPa/20.07%, 217MPa/18.86% and 185MPa/19.15% respectively.

The microstructure and mechanical properties of magnesium alloy AZ61wtih1% Sn addition has been studied in this paper. The results show that the addition of 1% Sn can refine the grain size and improve the microstructure morphology of β-Mg17Al12 phase. The addition of Sn can cause the formation of Mg2Sn phase in AZ61 alloy, which can effectively enhance the mechanical properties of magnesium alloy AZ61 at room temperature and 150°C.

The microstructure and mechanical properties of aged Mg-5.5Al-1.2Y magnesium alloy with Ca addition are investigated. The results show that with 1.0wt.% Ca addition, the phase of Al2Y is refined obviously and the phase of Mg17Al12 has a dramatic decrease in number. And, high melting point intermetallic compounds Al2Ca and Al4Ca are formed. Meanwhile, the β-Mg17Al12 phase become more dispersed. After 1.0wt.% Ca addition, the mechanical properties of the alloy at room and elevated temperature are improved.

The microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-cast Zn-25Al-5Mg-2.5Si-xGd alloys at room and elevated temperature have been investigated in this work. The results show that the addition of element Gd leads to the grain refining and the formation of Al3Gd phase and GdZn12 phase in the microstructure, and the mechanical properties of the alloys rise at first and then drop with the Gd content increasing. When Gd content is 0.8wt.%, the optimization of microstructure and mechanical properties is obtained. The alloy can be increased by 13.9%, 37.7% and 45.6% in tensile strength and be increased by 13.4%, 76.9% and 78.2% in hardness at room temperature, 100°C and 180°C, respectively.

Uni-axial tensile plastic deformation behavior of rolled magnesium alloy AZ31B under the temperature range from room temperature(RT) to 250°C with strain rates between 10-3 and 10-1s-1 has been systematically investigated. Microstructure evolution and texture were determined using optical microscopy (OM) and electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) techniques, respectively. Our results indicated that the strength and elongation-to-fracture were more sensitive to strain rates at elevated temperature rather than that at room temperature; dynamic recrystallization (DRX) and relaxation of stress at elevated temperature resulted in dramatic change of mechanical properties. Compared with strain rate, the temperature played a more important role in ductility of AZ31B Mg alloy sheet.

The grain size and the distribution of crystal orientation have an important effect on the mechanical properties of wrought AZ31B magnesium alloy sheets. Because the AZ31B magnesium alloy sheets rolled by conventional rolling have a poor formability at room temperature, a new rolling technology of differential speed rolling is used to improve the mechanical properties of AZ31B magnesium alloy. The research shows that the number of twinning crystal decreases, the number of the core of dynamically recrystallized grain increases, and the grain size become fine and isotropy by differential speed rolling with the increase of the reduction and the improving of the rolling temperature to some extent. The differential speed rolling not only improves the isotropy of the basal texture and also improves the microstructure and mechanical properties.

A series of Mg-6Al-2Sr-1.5Y-xNd (x=0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, 1.2) alloy samples were prepared and their microstructures were observed and mechanical properties were measured. The existing forms of Y and Nd were studied. The effects of Y and Nd on microstructure and mechanical properties of AJ62 alloy were investigated. The results show that the main existing forms of Y and Nd in AJ62 alloy are Al2Y and Al2Nd. The combined addition of rare earth Y and Nd can refine α-Mg matrix obviously and reduce the amount of the β-Mg17Al12phases; after solid solution treatment, the tensile strength of the alloys rise first and fall later with increasing content of Nd. When the content of Nd is about 0.6%wt, the values of tensile strengthes are up to the maximum both at room temperature and at 448 K.

The effects of yttrium on the microstructure and mechanical properties of magnesium alloy AZ81 have been investigated by alloy preparation, microstructure analysis and tensile tests. The results show that proper content of yttrium addition can obviously refine the microstructure of magnesium alloy AZ81, reduce the amount of β-Mg17Al12 phase, lead to the precipitation of Al2Y phase and improve the mechanical properties. After solid solution and aging treatment, the tensile strength and elongation of the alloy increase at first and then decrease with the increase of yttrium content, and reach the maxima at 2%Y. At room temperature, the maxima are 277MPa and 10.9% respectively. At 150 , the maxima are 220MPa and 12.4% respectively.

Microstructures and tensile properties of Mg-8Zn-4Al-xCax=0.6wt.%, 1.0wt.%, 1.3wt.%, named as alloy 1#, 2# and 3# , respectively)extruded magnesium alloy tube were studied at room and elevated temperature. The results show that Ca can increase tensile strength of the alloy at 150 and 200°C significantly. At the temperature of 200°C, alloy 3# achieved optimal tensile properties, of which the ultimate tensile strength, the yield strength and the elongation were 165.8MPa, 108.7Mpa and 41.5% respectively. Compared with the properties of as cast ZAC8506 Magnesium alloy, it is shown that the tensile properties of alloy 3# are much higher than that of ZAC8506 at both room temperature and 150°C. Alloy 3# also gets better tensile performance than AZ91D extruded tube produced in the same way at the temperature of 200°C Mg2Al3 and Ca2Mg5Zn13 phases are found in the microstructure which should contribute to the higher performance of alloy 3# at elevated temperature

By the scanning electron microscopy, the microstructure and mechanical properties testing, the effect of Ca and Y on the microstructure and mechanical properties of magnesium alloy AZ81 are investigated in this paper. The results show that with Ca and Y addition, the grain size is refined. And with the β-Mg17Al12 phase reducing significantly, there will be the precipitation of Al2Ca and Al2Y. Meanwhile, the mechanical properties of AZ81 magnesium alloy are enhanced at room temperature and 150°C.
