The conventional rolling of magnesium alloy with a single pass and large reduction will cause severe edge cracking. The sheet without cracks can be achieved by limited width rolling. The microstructure evolution of the sheet with cracks after conventional rolling and the sheet without cracks after limited width rolling is explored, and an effective mechanism for solving edge cracks is proposed. Conventional rolling can fully develop twin evolution due to high deformation, and three stages of twinning evolution can be observed and the secondary twins easily become the nucleation points of micro cracks, resulting in a large number of cracks propagating along the twin lamellae. Cracks terminate at dislocation accumulation because the accumulation of a large number of dislocations can hinder propagation. Dislocation shearing of twins to eliminate the high localization caused by twins and induce the tensile twins to weaken the basal surface texture provides an effective plastic deformation mechanism of crack inhibition, which is useful for expanding the engineering application of magnesium alloy rolled sheets.

Abstract In this work, based on the wet titration technology, an innovative method to prepare the ZrO2-Al2O3 composite beads which can greatly improve the bead properties is proposed. Using this process, the ZrO2-Al2O3 composite beads samples with different proportions of alumina component were prepared and tested. The bulk density test results show that the new method can prepare the beads with high compactness and without containing pores. The hardness test results show that the hardness of the composite beads is higher than zirconia beads without adding alumina. The SEM analyses show that the average grain size of the composite beads is about 180 nm, much smaller than the beads prepared by conventional rolling process. The XRD results show that there is no monoclinic phase in the composite beads after sintering at 1250 ℃. The EDS analyses show that the aluminum element exists in composite beads and the alumina grains are evenly distributed. Furthermore, the sintering temperature using this new process can achieve low-temperature sintering which is about 1250 ℃ much lower than the sintering temperature of conventional rolling process.

Cube texture ({001}<100>) is a desired final texture in non-oriented electrical steel sheets used as magnetic cores because it contains two easy <100> axes in the sheet plane, which is beneficial to the magnetic properties. However, the cube texture is very difficult to form in non-oriented electrical steels through conventional rolling and annealing. It has been shown that after conventional rolling, the deformed <111>//ND (normal direction) grains provided nucleation sites for the unfavourable <111>//ND texture during recrystallization, leading to a final <111>//ND texture. To eliminate the <111>//ND texture and promote the {001}<100> texture, an uncommon rolling process, i.e. inclined rolling, was adopted in this study. By rotating the hot rolling direction by 60° around the ND, an uncommon initial texture, the rotated Goss ({110}<110>), was intentionally generated. This was intended to change the orientation flow during plastic deformation, and suppress the formation of the conventional <111>//ND texture in the deformed microstructure. Plane-strain compression (rolling) of the rotated Goss grains produced shear bands within these grains due to their large Taylor factor. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) characterization of the shear bands illustrated that, crystallites with the cube orientation were formed within these shear bands. During recrystallization, the shear bands provided preferential nucleation sites, and the cube crystallites preferentially nucleate within the shear bands. These cube crystals can then grow into the deformed matrix, and lead to the formation of a strong cube texture in the final annealed steel sheets.

This work developed a well-bonded bcc/fcc bimetal interphase, which was produced by a two-step process involving diffusion bonding and conventional rolling. The high-quality interface maintained its integrity even at fracture. The earlier tensile instability in the core steel layer was constrained by the neighboring stable Cu layers on both sides, leading to extra strain hardening and consequently higher ductility. An increase in twin density or slip bands and shear deformation between the layers might be the primary causes for the observed hardening behaviors in the near-interface regions.

In order to produce a more isotropic Al-Mg-Si alloy sheet in the T4 temper, pre-annealed AA6016 hot rolled strips were cold rolled by conventional rolling, transverse rolling and an alternative rolling schedule. In this work, a weak and random texture was obtained in the alternative rolling sample, which was treated by solution treatment, as well as a fine and homogeneous recrystallized grain structure that reduced the earing percentage from 8.2% to 2.7%. An earing test was used to characterize the planar anisotropy of the AA6016 alloy. The crystallographic texture and microstructure of the AA6016 aluminum sheet were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and electron back scatter diffraction (EBSD) techniques. The earing percentage was reduced and eight-fold ears were produced in unidirectional rolled samples with strong β-fiber textures. Conversely, a higher earing percentage and four-fold ears were obtained for the alternative rolled sample, which was characterized by an appropriate combination of the Cube {001}<100> and stabilized BND {011}<3`22> [(φ1,¢,φ2) = (42°,45°,0°)] orientations. The main reason for the distinct earing profiles was the grain spatial distribution of textures formed during the cold rolling process. The dynamic recovery of the AA6016 alloy was promoted and both the nucleation and subsequent growth of the Cube orientation were suppressed by alternative rolling.

Purpose This paper aims to apply the heterogeneous autoregressive model of realized volatility (HAR-RV) model to minimum-variance hedge ratio estimation and compares the hedging performance of presenting a model with that of a conventional rolling ordinary-least-square (OLS) hedging model. Moreover, this paper empirically analyzes the relationship between hedging performance and the heterogeneity of investors with different trading frequency in forming the expectation for the spot volatility, futures volatility and the covariance in the market. Design/methodology/approach Use HAR-RV to form expectations of participants of spots and futures market for the next period volatility based on two parts. One is the current observable realized volatility at the same time scale. The other is the expectation for the next longer time scale horizon volatility. Compare hedging performance with rolling OLS model and HAR-RV model. Present a three-times-scale-length (daily, weekly and monthly) HAR-RV model for the spot and futures returns and volatility to analyze the relationship between the hedging performance and the heterogeneity among participants in each market. Findings The empirical results show that HAR-RV model outperforms the rolling OLS in terms of variance reduction and expected utility in the out-of-sample period. The results also indicate that the greater variance reduction occurs when investors with different trading frequency have a less heterogeneous expectation for spot volatility and more heterogeneous expectation for futures volatility and the covariance. In addition, the expected utility increases along with lower heterogeneity in spot volatility and higher in futures volatility and the covariance. Hedging performance improves along with decreasing heterogeneity of investors in spot volatility and increasing heterogeneity in futures volatility and the covariance. Originality/value This paper considers the heterogeneity of participants in spot and futures market, the authors apply HAR-RV model to MVHR estimation and compare the hedging performance of presenting a model with that of conventional rolling OLS hedging model, providing more evidence in hedging literature. This paper analyzes in depth the relationship between hedging performance and the heterogeneity in the market.

Systematic single pass rolling experiments were carried out at room temperature on extra low carbon steel by varying the roll diameter ratio between 1:1 to 1:2 and thickness reduction per pass in the range of 20–75%. The aim of this study was to define the conditions under which the rolling texture can transit into a shear texture. The consequences for grain fragmentation, tensile strength, recrystallization texture, and grain growth kinetics were also studied. It was found that in a certain range of thickness reduction per pass and asymmetric ratio, an effective rotation towards the shear texture takes place in conventional rolling. The value of the shear coefficient factor (shear strain rate/rolling strain rate) in asymmetric rolling depends on the selection of thickness reduction per pass. The measured value of shear coefficient was found to be independent of the number of passes used in asymmetric rolling. The consequence of arising shear textures is an acceleration of grain fragmentation. After rapid heat treatment, both tensile strength and recrystallization kinetics of asymmetric rolled sheets showed merits over the conventional rolling. Only the evolved Goss orientation from asymmetric conditions of deformation shows higher stability than any other preferred shear texture components after complete recrystallization.
