Industrial high damping steels based on the Fe - Al metallic system have been studied. The optimization of the crystalline structure of the industrial damping steels has been shown to be very important for the achievement of high mechanical properties including high fatigue resistance. In the same time the achievement of high damping properties strongly depends on the magnetic domain structure of the material and, consequently, on the heat treatment procedure.

A novel heat treatment procedure combining the shot-peening with a two-step aging operation was proposed to improve both the strength and the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance of the high-strength 7075 aluminium alloy. The heat treatment included one shot-peening stage before or between the two stages of aging at 120°C for 24 h and at 160°C for 1 h, respectively. The mechanical properties obtained during the aforementioned operations were extremely similar to those of the T6 sample owing to the unaffected bulk microstructure over such a low over-aging period. The SCC resistance of these samples was considerably improved, compared to that of the T6 sample and of the conventional shot-peened T6 sample due to the over-aging of the surface like the T7 treatment leading from the diffusion acceleration by the dislocations generated in the surface layer during shot-peening. In spite of the further depth of deformation caused by shot-peening prior to the first step of aging, the sample shot-peened after the first step of aging showed no significant decrease in the SCC resistance because of its higher generated dislocation by shot-peening.

Abstract To improve the mechanical properties of steel materials such as Vanadis 4extra, Vanadis 10, Vancron 40, and Böhler S600, the isothermal heat treatment procedure using salt bath was used. Samples of the steels were processed at different time of austempering at various temperatures and compared to the samples processed by heat treatment (i.e. quenching in air or quenching in oil and tempering in air) which is most widely used in practice. Hardness properties are determined by the steel microstructure, the size and number of carbide particles in this microstructure. The suitability of heat treatment for improving mechanical properties of different steel materials is assessed.

In this work we investigate magnetocaloric effect and heat capacity of Gd cold rolled ribbons. Such materials are easy to produce, they are flexible and convenient for using in magnetic cooling devices. It is shown that the magnetocaloric effect is strongly dependent on thickness of the ribbons. Severely rolled ribbons demonstrate rather a small magnetocaloric effect. However, a special heat treatment procedure makes it possible to enhance the effect up to the value observed in polycrystalline Gd.

Austempered ductile cast iron is newly developed engineering material with a favorable combination of comprehensive mechanical properties. Its properties, such as good comprehensive mechanical properties, high fatigue strength, and good fiction and wear characteristics are included. The application of ADI at home and abroad was presented as well. In order to ensure and improve mechanical properties of ADI, it should ensure high rank nodularity in terms of nodular cast iron, improve graphite nodules, reduce segregation and properly cut down the content of silicon and manganese. While in terms of heat treatment, in order to achieve ideal austenite ferrites, stable and reliable heat treatment process as well as relevant equipment is required.

In this paper, we have investigated AW-7921 in various tempers - specifically under aged T4P1-and T4P2-tempers, naturally aged T4 and peak-aged T6-tempers - for their warm formability at 230°C and paint baking response through one step and five step paint baking treatments. It was found that warm formability depends on dynamic recovery and dissolution of precipitates. However, the response to paint baking was dependent on the stability of the precipitates against coarsening. Of the tempers investigated the T4-temper exhibited the best combination of formability and paint baking response. This study also indicated that we can achieve much better performance in the warm forming processing chain by optimization of the temper and paint baking heat treatment procedure.
