In the paper, the numerical and experimental approach to the blast load evaluation was presented. The evaluation process is done in two steps. In the first, the full scale blast test is carried out with a simply mock-up resembling geometry of the bottom part of a vehicle. The pressure impulse is measured indirectly using a high speed camera and the motion analysis software. In the second step, a numerical simulation with the use of Multi Material Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian method is utilized to assess the influence of the fluid-structure interaction and the real vehicle mass on the value of the applied pressure impulse. In the paper, the application of method was presented and the results were discussed.

In this work, the resistance and deformation characteristics of a brittle material against rain erosion are examined by using the non-linear, explicit software LS-DYNA. The water jet with varying speeds impinges at 90° on silica float glass plates with different thicknesses. In the simulations, the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian method is used for modelling of the water. In order to analyse the deformations on the brittle material Johnson–Holmquist–Ceramics (JH-2) is used as the material model. Minimum plate thickness (for constant water jet speed) and maximum water speed (for constant plate thickness), which do not cause any damage to the target, are determined depending on the geometry, boundary conditions and assumed failure strain value for erosion. The results are compared with the water-hammer pressure.

To adapt to the rapid growth of the logistics market and further improve the competitiveness of railway transportation, the high-speed freight train with a design speed of 350 km/h is being developed in China. The safety of the train under great axle load of 17 t and dynamic load is unknown. This paper is aimed to study the running safety of the high-speed freight train coupled with various cargo loading conditions negotiating a sharp curve at high velocity. A numerical model integrated a fluid-structure coupled container model and the nonlinear high-speed freight train was set up by the software of LS-DYNA. The fluid-structure interaction model between the container and fluid cargo was established using the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method. Two influencing parameters, including the cargo state in the container and the fill level, were selected. The study results showed that the wheelset unloading ratio and overturning coefficient could be significantly affected by the liquid sloshing, while the influence of sloshing on the risk of derailment was slight. In general, increasing the cargo filling rate would contribute to vehicle operation safety. In conclusion, this study would provide theoretical help for the running safety of the newly designed high-speed freight train.

Determination of high-speed crafts’ hydrodynamic coefficients will help to analyze the dynamics of these kinds of vessels and the factors affecting their dynamic stabilities. Also, it can be useful and effective in controlling the vessel instabilities. The main purpose of this study is to determine the coefficients of longitudinal motions of a planing catamaran with and without a hydrofoil using Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes method to evaluate the foil effects on them. Determination of hydrodynamic coefficients by experimental approach is costly and requires meticulous laboratory equipment; therefore, utilizing the numerical methods and developing a virtual laboratory seem highly efficient. In this study, the numerical results for hydrodynamic coefficients of a high-speed craft are verified against Troesch’s experimental results. In the following, after determination of hydrodynamic coefficients of a planing catamaran with and without foil, the foil effects on its hydrodynamic coefficients are evaluated. The results indicate that most of the coefficients are frequency-independent especially at high frequencies.

Abstract This paper investigates the characteristics of viscous flow in the micron-scale clearances surrounding high-speed micro-rotors currently being developed for miniature energy conversion applications. Analysis and experimental results from 4 mm diameter microfabricated rotors operated above 1 million rpm are used to describe the viscous flow characteristics, and provide guidelines for system-level design. To first order, the flow is characterized as fully developed shear flow (Couette flow) across the small gaps, induced by the rotor motion. However, secondary flows are induced perpendicular to the direction of rotor motion when externally applied pressure gradients exist along the small gaps. The developing flow in the entrance region of the small gaps in this secondary flow direction impacts the shear flow profile, hence affecting the drag on the disk. The effect of other inertial forces, such as Coriolis and centrifugal forces, are investigated analytically and numerically and found to affect the shear flow profile on the fluid in the motor gap at high rotational speeds. Since viscous losses are prevelant in microsystems, appropriate modeling is necessary for system-level design.

In this paper, we show a fast and accurate numerical method for simulating the microwave heating of moving objects, which is still a challenge because of its complicated mathematical model simultaneously coupling electromagnetic field, thermal field, and temperature-dependent moving objects. By contrast with most discrete methods whose dielectric parameters of the heated samples are updated only when they move to a new position or even turn a circle, in our simulations a real-time procedure is added to renew the parameters during the whole heating process. Furthermore, to avoid the mesh-mismatch induced by remeshing the moving objects, we move the cavity instead of samples. To verify the efficiency and accuracy, we compared our method with the arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian method, one of the most accurate methods for computing this process until now. For the same computation model, our method helps in decreasing the computing time by about 90% with almost the same accuracy. Moreover, the influence of the rotational speed on the microwave heating is systematically investigated by using this method. The results show the widely used speed in domestic microwave ovens, 5 rpm, is indeed a good choice for improving the temperature uniformity with high energy efficiency.

The deformation of metal plates and tubes achievable through the use of liquid shock waves generated in a shock tube is studied, with reference to both free-forming and forming the metal into dies, as well as to imprinting detailed features. The process is highly controllable, in terms of the magnitude and duration of the applied pressure pulse. A projectile is fired into a liquid column producing a high-pressure liquid shock wave which impinges on the testpiece. Different projectile materials, driving pressures and impact velocities are used to alter the energy and impulse transmitted. A particular attraction of its use in a laboratory is the application of high-speed photography to the deformation process. Illustration of the application of the facility to slamming studies and to fracture of brittle materials is included. It is concluded that the techniques employed offer a useful and versatile tool for many studies of material deformation.
