Gallium (Ga) is a critical element for the electronic industry, however, its long-term supply is not assured. Thus, the recovery of Ga from industrial wastewaters is important. Selective sorption is a recommended technology for the recovery of Ga from industrial wastewaters, however, selective sorbents are elusive. Desferrioxamine B (DFOB), a hydroxomate siderophore that is known to be highly selective towards Fe3+, is tested for its ability to complex Ga. This study demonstrated that DFOB forms 1:1 complex with Ga and the maximum Qe-Ga is 124.4 mg of Ga complexed per g of DFOB. Further, the complexation mechanism of Ga3+ and Fe3+ with DFOB is similar, as indicated by NMR, suggesting that the selectivity of DFOB towards Fe3+ will be extended to Ga3+ as well. Thus, DFOB seems to be a suitable candidate for the sorption of Ga from industrial wastewaters.

We examined the physicochemical properties and the biocompatibility and hemocompatibility of electrospun 3D matrices produced using polyurethane Pellethane 2363-80A (Pel-80A) blends Pel-80A with gelatin or/and bivalirudin. Two layers of vascular grafts of 1.8 mm in diameter were manufactured and studied for hemocompatibility ex vivo and functioning in the infrarenal position of Wistar rat abdominal aorta in vivo (n = 18). Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) vascular grafts of similar diameter were implanted as a control (n = 18). Scaffolds produced from Pel-80A with Gel showed high stiffness with a long proportional limit and limited influence of wetting on mechanical characteristics. The electrospun matrices with gelatin have moderate capacity to support cell adhesion and proliferation (~30–47%), whereas vascular grafts with bivalirudin in the inner layer have good hemocompatibility ex vivo. The introduction of bivalirudin into grafts inhibited platelet adhesion and does not lead to a change hemolysis and D-dimers concentration. Study in vivo indicates the advantages of Pel-80A grafts over ePTFE in terms of graft occlusion, calcification level, and blood velocity after 6 months of implantation. The thickness of neointima in Pel-80A–based grafts stabilizes after three months (41.84 ± 20.21 µm) and does not increase until six months, demonstrating potential for long-term functioning without stenosis and as a suitable candidate for subsequent preclinical studies in large animals.

Long-term improvement of ecological environment quality (EEQ) is a hotspot and urgent topic in the context of high-quality and sustainable development. It is urgent to look for methods that could support EEQ improvement in a high-quality and sustainable way. Owing to its natural supporting and guaranteeing functions for enhancing quality, quality infrastructure (QI) is a fundamental and critical element in promoting EEQ, but a neglected one. In this paper, we analyzed the coupling structure between QI and EEQ and applied an improved coupling model to recognize contributed and weakened indicators that affected the coupling relationship. We also examined this coupling relationship in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) from 2012 to 2017, which proved the current situation where QI construction cannot satisfy the practical needs of EEQ improvement. Results showed that the important supporting role of QI in EEQ improvement should be valued for long-term sustainable development. Meanwhile, equilibrium and consistency of indicators in the QI and EEQ systems determined the coupling state. EEQ improvement countermeasures were also provided according to the coupling relationship analysis results. This study provided a scientific basis and guidance for EEQ improvement and sustainable development.

Abstract The mechanisms through which gonadal steroids exert feedback actions on the activity of the GnRH neurons are not understood. Using a series of GnRH-LacZ transgenic mice we have examined the manner in which gonadal steroids suppress GnRH mRNA expression in male and female mice. The long-term gonadectomy of 5.5-GNZ-3.5 transgenic mice resulted in significant increases in cellular GnRH mRNA expression (P < 0.05) and plasma LH concentrations (P < 0.01) in both sexes. However, cellular levels of LacZ mRNA and β-galactosidase, which provide an index of GnRH gene transcription, were only elevated in males after gonadectomy. This sexually differentiated response was also observed in mice gonadectomized for 2 wk. Estrogen replacement in gonadectomized males returned transgene expression to intact levels. Experiments in transgenic mice with 3′ and 5′ deleted GnRH-LacZ constructs revealed that the suppressive influence of estrogen on LacZ transcription in the male required a critical element located between −5.2 and −1.7 kb of the GnRH promoter. These studies show that the suppression of GnRH mRNA expression by estrogen in the male involves a decrease in GnRH gene transcription that is dependent on a distal GnRH promoter element. The same mechanism does not exist in females, indicating that gonadal steroids suppress GnRH mRNA levels in a sexually dimorphic manner.

<p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> The most critical element for successful management of lacrimal system pathology distal to common canaliculus that requires endoscopic endonasal dacrocystorhinostomy (EEDCR) is the creation of widest possible marsupialisation of the medial wall of the lacrimal sac. With minor modifications and simplication of the original technique of EEDCR, common surgical failures like obstruction of neo-ostium by granulation tissue or infolding of flap can be avoided. To determine the success of EEDCR using inferiorly based mucosal flap, removal of overlying bone using Kerrison’s punch followed by vertical incision of the medial wall of lacrimal sac with microdebrider assisted trimming of the lacrimal sac flaps.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> A total of 31 patients with epiphora secondary to nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO) were operated using the above technique with 3 bilateral cases amounting to a total of 34 procedures. The surgical outcome and long term patency of neo-ostium were evaluated.  </p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> Of the 34 procedures, 32 procedures (94.1%) had complete resolution of epiphora at the end of one year follow up. The 2 failures were due to canaliculitis.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Conclusions:</strong> Powered EEDCR with trimming of medial wall of lacrimal sac and inferiorly based mucosal flap preservation to cover the exposed part of bone is a simple procedure with favourable long term outcome.</p>

The cellular and molecular microenvironment of epithelial stem/progenitor cells is critical for their long-term self-renewal. We demonstrate that mesenchymal stem cell–like dermal microvascular pericytes are a critical element of the skin's microenvironment influencing human skin regeneration using organotypic models. Specifically, pericytes were capable of promoting homeostatic skin tissue renewal by conferring more planar cell divisions generating two basal cells within the proliferative compartment of the human epidermis, while ensuring complete maturation of the tissue both spatially and temporally. Moreover, we provide evidence supporting the notion that BMP-2, a secreted protein preferentially expressed by pericytes in human skin, confers cell polarity and planar divisions on epidermal cells in organotypic cultures. Our data suggest that human skin regeneration is regulated by highly conserved mechanisms at play in other rapidly renewing tissues such as the bone marrow and in lower organisms such as Drosophila. Our work also provides the means to significantly improve ex vivo skin tissue regeneration for autologous transplantation.

A sense of strangerhood, which is different from social isolation or cultural alienation, is common among many of the international students whom I encounter. In a world increasingly preoccupied with personal interaction and social exchange, many of these students perceive strangerhood as problematic and inherently negative. This brief reflection considers strangerhood from the perspective of Georg Simmel and argues that being a stranger has considerable positive value. Recognition of strangerhood is a critical element in developing a greater understanding of both the self and the Other. Legitimizing the experience of strangerhood, emphasizing its potential value, and empowering students to embrace it may provide significant short- and long-term benefits for international students in their personal and transformative journeys.

This article provides a review of selected studies conducted in recent years on the relationship between gender identity and recovery following traumatic brain injury (TBI) with the goal of determining whether gender constructions play a role in the lived experience of TBI survivors. The studies reviewed show that psychosocial issues resulting from perceived difficulties in doing gender can be a burden to successful recovery and that addressing these constructions can have a positive influence on long-term results. Consequently, the author argues that gender should be considered a critical element in the aetiology and management of psychosocial issues following the injury and that a combination of factors should be addressed when looking at gendered aspects of post-TBI recovery, including attitudes toward care, motivation and satisfaction with rehabilitation outcomes. In particular, stronger collaboration between the medical field and social sciences is encouraged, with the aim of exploring individual perspectives and experiences especially on a larger scale than what has currently been achieved.

Environmental factors such as light intensity (PPF) and/or air temperature may be limiting engineering constraints in near or long-term space missions. This will potentially affect NASA's ability to provide either dietary augmentation to the crew or maintain a large-scale bioregenerative life support system. Crops being considered by NASA to provide supplemental food for crew consumption during such missions consist primarily of minimally processed “salad” species. Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Flandria), radish (Raphanus sativus L. cv. Cherry Bomb II), and green onion (Allium fistulosum L. cv. Kinka) are being evaluated under a range of PPF and temperature environments likely to be encountered in space systems. Plants were grown for 35 days under cool-white fluorescent (CWF) lamps with light intensities of 8.6, 17.2, or 26 μmol·m-2·d-1, at air temperatures of 25 and 28 °C, and 50% relative humidity, and 1200 μmol·mol-1 CO2. Regardless of temperature, all three species showed an increase in edible mass with increasing light levels. When grown at 28 °C, edible mass of radish was significantly reduced at all lighting intensities compared to 25 °C, indicating a lower optimal temperature for radish. Understanding the interactions of these environmental factors on crop performance is a critical element to defining future missions that incorporate plant-based life support technologies.
