Geology of Greenland Survey Bulletin, 183, 34-38. https://doi.org/10.34194/ggub.v183.5202 _______________ Airborne geophysical surveying in Greenland during 1998 consisted of a magnetic project referred to as ‘Aeromag 1998’ and a combined electromagnetic and magnetic project referred to as ‘AEM Greenland 1998’. The Government of Greenland financed both with administration managed by the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS). With the completion of the two projects, approximately 305 000 line km of regional high-resolution magnetic data and approximately 75 000 line km of detailed multiparameter data (electromagnetic, magnetic and partly radiometric) are now available from government financed projects. Figure 1 shows the location of the surveyed areas with highresolution geophysical data together with the area selected for a magnetic survey in 1999. Completion of the two projects was marked by the release of data on 1 March, 1999. The data are included in the geoscientific databases at the Survey for public use; digital data and maps may be purchased from the Survey.

Abstract Thin section, high resolution computed tomographic (CT) scans of the lumbar spine produce images that can show herniated intervertebral discs without intravenous or intrathecal contrast enhancement. With this technique, the diagnosis of posterolateral and midline herniation has been greatly facilitated. This communication reports the use of CT discography in the preoperative evaluation of two patients who were shown at discography and proven at operation to have extreme lateral disc herniations.

The optical examination of a rock sample in thin section is the quickest and most economical method for classifying rock type and determining which analytical route to follow.Thin sections for transmitted light are the most common, but there are also:Polished Thin Sections • Polished sections are used for classification and identification of minerals that cannot be determined in standard thin sections. They are also essential for microprobe analysis. Minute mineral grains are analyzed by bombarding them with a focused bean of electrons, which generate x-rays, characteristic of the elements within the grains. X-rays are identified and quantified to determine the chemical composition of minerals.

AbstractSecondary phosphate assemblages from the Hagendorf Süd granitic pegmatite, containing the new Mn-Al phosphate mineral, nordgauite, have been characterized using scanning electron microscopy and electron microprobe analysis. Nordgauite nodules enclose crystals of the jahnsite—whiteite group of minerals, showing pronounced compositional zoning, spanning the full range of Fe/Al ratios between jahnsite and whiteite. The whiteite-rich members are F-bearing, whereas the jahnsite-rich members contain no F. Associated minerals include sphalerite, apatite, parascholzite, zwieselite-triplite solid solutions and a kingsmountite-related mineral. The average compositions of whiteite and jahnsite from different zoned regions correspond to jahnsite-(CaMnMn), whiteite-(CaMnMn) and the previously undescribed whiteite-(CaMnFe) end-members. Mo-Kα CCD intensity data were collected on a twinned crystal of the (CaMnMn)-dominant whiteite and refined in P2/a to wRobs = 0.064 for 1015 observed reflections.

AbstractThere have been few accounts of multi-channel cochlear implants in patients with congenital structural deformities of the inner ear which are associated with severe and sometimes progressive deafness. These malformations can now be recognized easily on 2 plane thin section high resolution CT studies which are mandatory for the pre-implantation assessment. However, no attempt seems to have been made to describe which of these malformations would be suitable for an implant or for which would this procedure be contra-indicated. True Mondini deformity of both the cochlea and dilated vestibular aqueduct type would appear suitable for a multi channel implant, but this type of implant should not be used for a primitive otocyst, severe labyrinthine dysplasia or the characteristic X-linked deformity.
