The field of theology and development is a relatively new sub-discipline within theological studies in Africa. The first formal post-graduate programme was introduced at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa during the mid-1990s. In the early years it was known as the Leadership and Development programme and since 2000, as the Theology and Development programme. Over the past twenty years, this programme has graduated over 160 BTh Honours, 100 MTh, and 15 PhD students. This article outlines the history of the programme, addresses its ideological orientation, its pedagogical commitments and preferences in curriculum design. It further argues that theological reflection on “development” must seek to understand the prophetic role of the church in responding to the complexities of the social issues facing the African continent.  Key to this discussion is the contested nature of “development” and the need for theological perspectives to engage this contestation through a social analysis of the global structures of injustice. This requires an engagement with the social sciences. It is this engagement of the social sciences with theological reflection, the essay argues, that has enabled the students who have graduated from the Theology and Development Programme at the University of KwaZulu-Natal to assist the church and faith-based organisations to become effective agents of social transformation.

For many centuries, social issues have been important, and they remain relevant today. Right now, they are receiving special attention, because the level of social life in Ukraine is not the best. In this case, the role of the Church as a social institution is ancillary to the healing of society.

This paper begins with a sociohistorical analysis of the university as a specific community of interacting intellectuals, which enabled the creation of an epistemological and institutional core for the development of the social sciences. On the other hand, we critically consider and analyze the contemporary university reforms in Europe, in terms of bringing universities and the social community closer together through the social dimension, as well as the dimensions of entrepreneurship and innovation. This paper aims to investigate the role of the university from its inception as a specific and unique intellectual community, towards its current aspirations to connect and integrate with the wider community. Two research tasks have been defined: the first refers to determining the importance of the interaction among intellectuals within the university for the production of scientific knowledge, while the second task involves analyzing the importance of interaction between the university and the social community through the university?s third mission. The research results indicate that the institutional and interactionist framework for the establishment of the university as an institution that communicates with the wider community was gradually formed through its various roles and reforms in the course of social history. However, we also conclude that the social role of the university has always been relatively complementary to the current third mission requirements, and with the historical development of knowledge concerning human society.

During a bibliometric analysis of the scholarship of ninety-five social science faculty members at the University of West Georgia (UWG), observations were made concerning potential differences between how scholarly communication is practiced by the disciplines of the social sciences and biblical studies. The fields appear to diverge on the role of book reviews, prevalence of co-authored materials, use of ORCIDs, and adoption of DOIs. In addition to highlighting these points, the data set used for the project is described. Finally, a few theological reflections are offered.

In contemporary academic discourse, there has been a strong tendency to shape theology according to a viewpoint based on the achievements of other sciences, especially those found in philosophy, psychology, sociology and anthropology. This has been particularly illustrated in the issue of masculinity. In this context, a question arises as follows: does theology have something to say to the social sciences? Or, does it only have to submit to them and simply fulfil the role of a commentator? The setting of this study has been the contemporary crisis in understanding masculinity, and the theological reflection that this situation calls for. To address this challenge, we have used a historical-analytical method in which we traced the historical and philosophical underpinnings of the concept of masculinity, with a special focus on modernity, in order to clearly understand the present state of the debate around masculinity.As a result, we have proposed some direction for future theological development, demonstrating that theology may also influence and inspire the other sciences. In conclusion, we have encouraged a deeper collaboration of various sciences that have already developed a reflection on masculinity, whilst avoiding unnecessary biases and simplification; we have sought to establish a better collaboration between feminist movements and theological reflection as well as making use of theology’s potential to inspire other sciences such as psychology, sociology and anthropology in this endeavour.Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: Using such an interdisciplinary collaboration, theology can supply a more positive and hope-giving picture of the contemporary male human being facing an identity crisis, as is demonstrated predominantly in the social sciences. Special attention to this topic has been given in Spiritual Theology.

This essay addresses directions for the Social Issues in Management (SIM) Division from the perspective of “Back to the Future.” The author was chair of the SIM Division in 1983 to 1984 and the 1989 recipient of the SIM Division’s Sumner Marcus Distinguished Service Award. The essay reviews the general history of SIM during the 1960s and 1970s in which the University of California, Berkeley, played a key role in organizing conferences. The author explains his approach as an applied empiricist to research concerning SIM. The essentials are power, legitimacy, responsibility, rationality, and values, and understanding how they impact the ongoing day-to-day interactions within, between, and among business organizations, their leadership, and other sectors of society. SIM is a field of diverse inquiry which has been the recipient of perspectives and persons drawn not only from multiple disciplines, particularly from the social sciences, law, and management, but also from the humanities and sciences. SIM is patently multi- and inter-disciplinary.

The late Philip Selznick's final book, A Humanist Science, examines the role of values and ideals in the social sciences, including the study of law and society. Throughout his academic career, Selznick was committed to what he called “legal naturalism,” a sociological version of the natural‐law perspective, while his critics continue to adhere to various forms of positivism. But the age‐old opposition between natural law and legal positivism today may be giving way to the quest for public sociology—a sociology that promotes public reflection on significant social issues and thus functions as a moral and political force. A Humanist Science ends with a strong plea for public philosophy. Public philosophy overlaps with public sociology but is a much stronger concept. Selznick's message of public philosophy may be another of his enduring contributions to the field of law and society.

Esta investigación tiene por objeto evaluar las competencias curriculares del alumnado del Grado en Educación Infantil, tras cursar las asignaturas de Didáctica de las Ciencias Sociales. Para ello, nos centramos en examinar dos indicadores principales: si emplea de forma apropiada el principio de globalidad que debe presidir los procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje de esta etapa, y si reconoce e identifica el contenido social curricular. Siguiendo una metodología cualitativa y empleando los programas informáticos Nvivo 11 y Pajek 5.07, se han analizado contenidos textuales generados por 224 alumnos y alumnas, procedentes de ISEN (Universidad de Murcia) y de la Universidad de Málaga, a quienes se les pidió que, a partir de la elección de un contenido social del currículo, propusieran una situación de aprendizaje integrado. Los resultados nos muestran dificultades tanto en la identificación de las temáticas específicamente sociales, como en la conexión entre contenidos de las distintas áreas del currículo. En consecuencia, se revela necesario un tratamiento más exhaustivo de estos aspectos desde el ámbito de la Didáctica de las Ciencias Sociales, que implique un mejor conocimiento y delimitación de lo “social” por parte del futuro profesorado de Educación Infantil.   The objective of this research is to evaluate the curricular competences of the students of the Degree in Preschool Education, after having completed the subject of Social Sciences Education. In order to achieve this purpose, we focus on examining two indicators: if the students adequately use the principle of globality that should preside over the teaching and learning processes of the preschool stage; and if they recognizes and identifies the curricular social content. For this, from a qualitative methodological approach, we have used the software Nvivo 11 and Pajek64 5.07, to analyze the textual contents generated by 224 students from ISEN (University of Murcia) and the University of Málaga. All of them were asked to choose a social content of the curriculum and to propose an integrated learning situation based on it. The research results show us difficulties in the identification of specifically social issues, and in the connection between contents of the different areas of the curriculum. Consequently, it is evident that a more exhaustive treatment of these aspects is necessary from the scope of the Social Sciences Education, which implies a better knowledge and delimitation of the social content by the future preschool teachers.

Abstract It can be argued that theology in the Caribbean has, until recently, been reticent in engaging cultural studies, and particularly in using African Caribbean religiocultural heritages and art-forms such as carnival, reggae, stickfigting, Obeah and Myal, as examples, as sites for theological reflection. Undergirding this reticence is a colonially inherited belief in a dichotomy between the sacred and the secular; between the church and culture; and consequently, between theology and the social sciences. This paper argues that despite popular mis-conceptions, Junkanoo, a mainly Anglophone Caribbean street festival fundamental to Bahamian identity, has always functioned as a new and liberative way of doing theology in that context. Its complex relationship with the church deeply challenges concepts of sacredness, secularity, profanity, and idolatry as they are lived out in contemporary Bahamian life. This insight is important not only for theological research and discourse, but also for cultural studies and various forms of social research, since accessing the dynamic truths of such African Caribbean religiocultural productions and experiences require such an interdisciplinary approach.

The paper points to some possible advantages of translation as a language activity in the ESP/ESAP classroom as well as to its role in bringing to the fore some aspects of language use that may not be always explicitly addressed by the commonly used tasks in communicative language teaching. Attention is thus drawn to the role of translation in diagnosing students’ language competences with the aim of improving them and eventually developing their overall reading comprehension. Most conclusions have been reached on the basis of the authors’ extensive experience in teaching students of different disciplines and with varied L2 proficiency levels at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Belgrade, and, more specifically, on the basis of the results obtained through the analysis of a large corpus of students’ translations in the fields of pedagogy, anthropology and history, tentatively representing the social sciences–humanities spectrum. As well as being an indication of the aspects of L2 that need to be additionally focused on, the common errors serve to substantiate the rationale behind the use of translation in an ESP/ESAP course.

With reference to Yu. F. Samarin’s thesis on “Formalism” of the Church Life in the Pre-Petrine Period, the article examines the issue of the role of fasts, eating patterns and daily routine in general among most radical groups of Old Believers. The author of the article draws the conclusion that such conceptions were rooted in the Pre-Nikon Russian religious (monkish) traditions. The author pays special attention to the social and political aspect of the connection between food and payer for the Tsar in the context of the “spiritual Antichrist” teaching.
