This paper explores the impact of a one-year in-service distance education  mathematics  course that follows a problem-solving approach. The course aims  to develop teachers’ mathematical thinking skills. Results show that  the course improved the teachers’ confidence, problem-solving skills and teaching skills. Results also show that the course on mathematical thinking skills helps to improve teachers’ understanding of mathematics content.

The aim of this research is to examine the mathematical thinking skills of licensed athletes engaged in individual and team sports. The research is designed as a survey model. The sample of the research is composed of 59 female and 170 male licensed athletes (n = 229) and (aged 14 to 52) licensed who do the sports of shooting, billiards, archery, tennis, basketball, football, volleyball in various clubs in Turkey. The "Mathematical Thinking Scale" developed by Ersoy (2012) has been employed in the research. Individual sports athletes are more likely to have higher mathematical thinking scores than team athletes. In sports types; those who play billiards and archery have higher scores of mathematical thinking skills compared to other sports types. According to the type of sports the lowest scores of thinking skills were obtained by basketball players. These differences are valid for higher-level thinking tendencies, reasoning, mathematical thinking skills and problem-solving skills, which are sub-dimensions of the mathematical thinking scale.

It is known that variables such as attitudes, faith, self-efficacy, critical thinking skills, reflective thinking skills are variables used to explain the students’ mathematical success and the impact rates of these variables are not the same. In this study, students' predictive power towards mathematical achievements of faith and reflective thinking skills were investigated in terms of problem solving as corresponding to these variables. Relational search model was used in the research. The sample of the research is composed of 143 mathematics teacher candidates who are studying in the departmen of Elemantary Mathematics Teaching in a university. Regression analysis was done for predicting students’ mathematical achievement by sub dimensions of belief about problem solving which are mathematical skill, mathematical situation, understanding problem, importance of mathematics, problem solving skills and sub dimensions of reflective thinking ability which are inquiry, evaluation and heuristics. Research findings show that these variables are about 18 percent of the total variance in mathematical success. Araştırmada bu değişkenlere karşılık gelecek şekilde problem çözme temalı olarak öğrencilerin matematiğe karşı inanç ve yansıtıcı düşünce becerilerinin matematiksel başarılarına olan yordama gücü incelenmiştir. Araştırmada ilişkisel tarama modeli kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklemini, bir üniversitenin İlköğretim Matematik Öğretmenliği bölümünde öğrenim görmekte olan 143 matematik öğretmen adayı oluşturmaktadır. Problem çözmeye ilişkin inancın alt boyutları olan matematiksel beceri, matematiğin yeri, problemi anlama, matematiğin önemi ve problem çözme becerisi ile yansıtıcı düşünme becerisinin alt boyutları olan sorgulama, değerlendirme ve nedenleme değişkenlerine göre öğrencilerin matematik başarısının yordanmasına yönelik regresyon analizi yapılmıştır. Araştırmada bu değişkenlerin birlikte matematik başarısındaki toplam varyansın yaklaşık %18’ini açıkladığı sonucu bulunmuştur. Öğrenci başarısının artırılması amacıyla öğrencilerin öğrenimleri süresince kavramsal ve işlemsel bilginin birbirine yakın bir şekilde ilişkilendirilmesinin öğrenci başarısını etkileyebileceği düşünülmektedir.

In our new education curriculum, it has been seen that it is no longer sufficient for students to learn only the achievements, unlike these gains, solution strategies that the student visualizes in his mind and designed by himself are also needed. Mathematical thinking, which is the process of obtaining new information completely different from the student's old knowledge and new knowledge, using it in the solution of the problem, and transforming that knowledge into new knowledge, has become extremely important. MEB asks students for deep mathematical thinking and problem solving skills in all questions they ask in the skill-based tests and student selection exam LGS. In this study, mathematical thinking and problem solving skills of middle school 7th grade students while solving problems will be examined. The research was applied to 241 students in 7 different secondary schools in the province of Bingöl in the Eastern Anatolia Region in the 2020-2021 academic year. In the study, it was investigated by quantitative and qualitative methods whether the mathematical thinking and problem solving skills of the students on rational numbers are related to gender, whether they had pre-school education and daily reading time. In the research, the SPSS 25 package program was used in the analysis of quantitative data, and in the analysis of qualitative data by examining the process steps in the answers from the students. As a result of the research, a statistically significant difference was found between male and female students, and this difference is in favor of female students. According to the findings obtained from the research, no statistically significant difference was found between the students who had and did not have pre-school education. Secondary school 7th grade students’ mathematical thinking and problem solving skills are related to their daily reading time. According to the results, students who read for an hour a day are more successful than students who read for fifteen minutes a day.

<p>The aim of the present research was study of the impact of music therapy on problem-solving skills of 4 to 6 years old children in Tehran. This research was a quasi-experimental study with pretest-posttest control group. The statistical population was all 4 to 6 years old children in region 2 of Tehran. Using the random sampling method, the study sample was chosen in two experiment (15 individuals) and control (15 individuals) groups.   The experiment group received 12 sessions of music therapy and the control group was waiting for treatment meanwhile. To evaluate the problem-solving skill in children, the three subscales of Wechsler’s Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI) were used, including: mazes, cubes and arithmetic.  Analysis of data obtained from the questionnaires was conducted in two parts of descriptive and inferential. The data analysis indicated the significant increase of problem-solving average score of the experiment group compared to the control group.</p>

The impact of grouping, learning handicap, locus of control, and self esteem on students' performance on a math problem-solving program was assessed in two studies. Outcome measures included: 1) the level of difficulty at which students selected to work, 2) use of a program help command, and 3) response accuracy with and without help. Despite indication from the non-computer instructional literature that grouping would facilitate problem-solving skills for some students, neither problem selections nor performance accuracy varied as a function of group configuration. Personal characteristics influenced problem selections, help seeking, and accuracy in anticipated directions but not consistently. More consistent patterns were noted as a function of initial student competency in math.

Schizophrenia is one of the most common medical diagnoses of mental disorders and is a severe mental disorder that is influenced by biological, psychological and environmental factors. Schizophrenics have cognitive and behavioral disorders, so they have difficulty in determining appropriate coping. Koping is meant a process in order to change the cognitive domain and or behavior constantly to regulate and control external and internal demands and pressures. The purpose of this study was to determine coping strategies in schizophrenia the maintenance stage patients in the inpatient ward of the Naimata Kupang mental hospital. This type of research is descriptive research with a quantitative approach. The population in this study were 70 patients with Schizophrenia. The sample in this study were 30 patients with schisophrenia. The results obtained are that there is no impact from physical health and education on the application of coping strategies to Schizophrenia patients. The impact of positive beliefs (Emotion Focused Coping), problem solving skills (Problem Focused Coping), social and occupational support or socioeconomic status on the application of coping strategies to schizophrenia patients. The type of Emotion Focused Coping used is the highest type of Distancing and the Escape-Avodiance type while for the type of use of Problem Focused Coping there are Confrontative-Coping, Planfull Problem Solving and Seeking Social Support. Hospitals and families are expected to always provide support to patients both in the form of verbal and non verbal, material, and motivational support to be able to support the healing process of schizophrenic patients.

The article discusses the ways of developing skills and abilities to effectively solve problems when describing methods for solving equations and inequalities, clarifying theoretical knowledge, the basics of forming skills for practical application. The formation of mathematical concepts through solving problems in teaching mathematics opens the way to the development of mathematical thinking, the application of knowledge in practice, and the development of search skills. To master a mathematical concept, along with its definition, it is necessary to know its features and properties. This can be achieved primarily through problem solving and exercise. Problem solving is based on the development of new methods, the creation of algorithms, ways of developing practical skills in the methods and techniques mastered with the help of tasks.In addition, transforming equations and inequalities through the development of thinking skills helps to identify common or special properties in order to draw correct conclusions. Solving various problems, it shows what operations should be used to determine the situation in which a solution was found, and what features of the solution allow choosing the most effective methods. Thanks to the theoretical substantiation of the general article, it is possible to master convenient methods for solving equations and inequalities of various structures.

This study aims to evaluate the suitability of the Scenario Based Learning Module (SBL), which has been designed in the topic of Problem Solving Models. The study also aims to examine the advantages of SBL in universities and secondary education levels.  In addition, this study was conducted to find out the barriers and constraints in the designated SBL.  Lecturers from a university and a secondary school participated in this study which is conducted as an interview.  The interview is aimed to gather information on the suitability and features of the module, as well as the advantages and obstacles in the SBL module.  The data obtained from the interviews are qualitatively analyzed through the transcription process.  The findings show that the modules are designed to be practiced at university level among students. The findings also show that the module has many advantages in terms of understanding the learning content, thinking skills and problem solving skills, social and collaborative skills and intrinsic motivation of students.  Additionally, obstacles and constraints that exist in SBL are also discussed. This study benefits from the perspective of providing information on the suitability, advantages and obstacles of SBL for the Problem Solving course in Chemistry Education.  In fact, university lecturers and secondary school teachers can take this study as a reference for SBL applications in teaching and learning.  University students can also benefit from the SBL module designed and the results of this study.

The article presents the importance of integrating soft skills into teaching specialized knowledge. Through the article, the author presents the importance of Organizing Events subject as well as shows that Organizing Events is a subject that requires learners to have many skills such as: independent working skills, teamwork skills, creative thinking skills; coordination skills, problem-solving skills, listening skills and some other skills. All the skills mentioned above are applied to Organizing Events at each stage, each activity when organizing the event. In order for students to effectively apply the skills into the subject, teachers can design lectures, provide exercises in accordance with the content of the subject, divide each stage so that it can be further taught helping students grasp each content, thereby being able to best use the subject when designing each profile for the assumed event and students have to practice organizing events according to reality. Besides, the articlealso emphasizes that integrating soft skills into teaching specialized knowledge is a necessity, from the reality of the Organizing Events subject.

We report on a new problem solving module for second-year undergraduate mathematics students first piloted during the 2016-17 academic year at Cardiff University.  This module was introduced in response to the concern that for many students, traditional teaching and assessment practices do not offer sufficient opportunities for developing problem-solving and mathematical thinking skills, and more generally, to address the recognised need to incorporate transferrable skills into our undergraduate programmes.  We discuss the pedagogic and practical considerations involved in the design and delivery of this module, and in particular, the question of how to construct open-ended problems and assessment activities that promote mathematical thinking, and reward genuinely original and independent mathematical work.
