CALVING EASE AND CALF MORTALITY IN FIRST-CROSS AND BACKCROSS COWS

Calving ease and calf mortality were evaluated for calves out of first-cross and backcross cows maintained under two contrasting environments. All calves were sired by Limousin bulls. The dam crosses at Brandon were HA, SN, CN, ACA, CCA, ASA, SSA, HCH, CCH, HSH, SSH, NCN, CCN, SSN, and NSN with H = Hereford, A = Angus, N = Shorthorn, C = Charolais, S = Simmental and a SSA cross was 3/4 Simmental-1/4 Angus. At Manyberries the dam crosses were HA, SN, ASA, SSA, HSH, SSH, NSN, and SSN. The calves were born between 1982 and 1986, inclusive, at Brandon, Manitoba (semi-intensive management) and Manyberries, Alberta (extensive range management). At Brandon, when calf birth weight was not a covariate, the significant dam cross contrasts for calving ease included less difficulty for SN cows than either the SSN or NSN cows, and for 3/4 A-1/4 European continental (E) cows than 1/4A–3/4E cows. When adjusted to a common calf birth weight the significant contrasts were HA cows had more difficulty than SN cows and the combination of SN and CN cows, SN cows had less difficulty than NSN cows, and 3/4A–1/4E cows had less difficulty than 1/4A–3/4E cows. At Manyberries, regardless of whether calf birth weight was excluded or included as a covariate, the SN cows had less difficulty than the SSN and the SSN cows had less difficulty than NSN cows. No significant dam cross comparisons were observed for calf mortality scores. Adjusting the calving ease scores to a constant calf birth weight did not significantly alter the magnitude of the contrasts but it did shift their probability levels. Location and sex of calf effects were not significant except for calving ease at Brandon where more difficulty was associated with male calves than female calves. Live body measurements were evaluated in F1 and backcross females ranging in age from 1 to 5 yr, inclusive, maintained at Manyberries, Alberta (extensive range management) and Brandon, Manitoba (semi-intensive management). The objectives of this study were to examine measures of size, weight, and subcutaneous fat cover to determine: (1) their relationship with age of cow; (2) the impact of varying proportions of Simmental and Charolais breeding; (3) the similarity between generalized and specific contrasts involving 1/4 and 3/4 European continental and British breeding; and (4) differences between four consecutive lactations and three out of four possible lactations. Body length, height at the hips and withers, and cow weight at weaning reached or approached their mature levels by 5 yr of age and subcutaneous fat cover was more dependent upon environmental factors than age. Incremental increases in Simmental and Charolais breeding in the cow crosses resulted in corresponding increases in body size and weight. The generalized comparisons between 1/4 and 3/4 Simmental, Charolais, Angus, Hereford, and Shorthorn breeding provided useful information regarding generic comparisons but there was a need for evaluating specific backcross comparisons. Cows experiencing four consecutive lactations, compared to those that had three lactations out of a possible four, had decreased physical dimensions in addition to weight and subcutaneous fat cover. Preweaning performance was evaluated for calves out of first-cross and reciprocal back-cross cows maintained under two contrasting environments. All cows were bred to Limousin bulls and the calves were born between 1982 and 1986, inclusive, at Brandon, Manitoba (semi-intensive management) and Manyberries, Alberta (extensive range management). Dam cross comparisons revealed that calves out of Hereford × Angus dams were inferior to calves out of European continental × British dams for all preweaning traits at both locations. Comparisons between calves out of F1 dams and calves out of backcross (1/4 or 3/4 European continental) dams generally favored the calves out of F1 females. Specific and nonspecific comparisons between the reciprocal backcrosses demonstrated that calves out of dams with 3/4 European continental breeding were heavier and grew faster than calves out of dams with 1/4 European continental breeding. Male calves exceeded female calves for all preweaning traits and calves born at Manyberries were heavier and grew faster than calves born at Brandon. Lines within a breed which differ in their level of performance may require different age-of-dam adjustment factors in the same way that different breeds do. Age-of-dam adjustments calculated from a control and a yearling weight selection line indicated lower values in the selected line for calf birth weight, weaning weight and yearling weight for 2- and 4-yr-old dams. Trends for adjustment factors in each line over time were generally not significant but tended to diverge. Age-of-dam adjustment factors within a breed may need to be reevaluated at intervals as levels of performance change. Key words: Beef cattle, age of dam adjustment, selection, yearling weight

The most appropriate model for genetic parameters estimation for calving ease and birth weight in beef cattle was selected. A total of 27 402 field records were available from the Czech Charolais breed. For estimation of genetic parameters for calving ease and body weight, three bivariate models were tested: a linear-linear animal model (L-LM) with calving ease classified into four categories (1 – easy; 2–4 – most difficult), a linear-linear animal model (SC-LM) in which calving ease scores were transformed into Snell scores (Snell 1964) and expressed as percentage of assisted calving (ranging 0–100%), and a bivariate threshold-linear animal model (T-LM) with calving ease classified into four categories (1 – easy, 2–4 – most difficult). All tested models included fixed effects for contemporary group (herd × year × season), age of dam, sex and breed of a calf. Random effects included direct and maternal genetic effects, maternal permanent environmental effect, and residual error. Direct heritability estimates for calving ease and birth weight were, with the use of L-LM, SC-LM, and T-LM, from 0.096 ± 0.013 to 0.226 ± 0.024 and from 0.210 ± 0.024 to 0.225 ± 0.026, respectively. Maternal heritability estimates for calving ease and birth weight were, with the use of L-LM, SC-LM, and T-LM, from 0.060 ± 0.031 to 0.104 ± 0.125 and from 0.074 ± 0.041 to 0.075 ± 0.040, respectively. Genetic correlations of direct calving ease with direct birth weight ranged from 0.46 ± 0.06 to 0.50 ± 0.06 for all tested models; whereas maternal genetic correlations between these two traits ranged from 0.24 ± 0.17 to 0.25 ± 0.53. Correlations between direct and maternal genetic effects within-trait were negative and substantial for all tested models (ranging from –0.574 ± 0.125 to –0.680 ± 0.141 for calving ease and from –0.553 ± 0.122 to –0.558 ± 0.118 for birth weight, respectively), illustrating the importance of including this parameter in calving ease evaluations. Results indicate that any of the tested models could be used to reliably estimate genetic parameters for calving ease for beef cattle in the Czech Republic. However, because of advantages in computation time and practical considerations, genetic analysis using SC-LM (transformed data) is recommended.

Birth and weaning weight data were evaluated on 1/2 Simmental (SH, SA), 1/2 Maine-Anjou (MH, MA), 3/4 Simmental (S.SH, S.SA) and 3/4 Maine-Anjou (M.MH, M.MA) calves. For birth weight, 1/2 Simmental calves were lighter (P < 0.01) than 1/2 Maine-Anjou calves, and calves from Hereford cows were heavier (P < 0.01) than calves from Angus cows. Also, S.SH calves were heavier (P < 0.01) than S.SA calves. For weaning weight, 3/4 Simmental calves were heavier (P < 0.01) than 3/4 Maine-Anjou calves, and 1/2 Simmental and Maine-Anjou calves were lighter (P < 0.01) than 3/4 Simmental and Maine-Anjou calves. A subset of birth weight records consisting of 191 535 calves, from 7021 herd-years with fewer than 50% estimated weights, tested during 1971 through 1980 was selected from the data files of the Federal-Provincial Record of Performance program for beef cattle to estimate breed averages and age of dam adjustment factors. The main effects included herd-years, breed of sire, breed of dam, sex of calf and age of dam. The interaction effects for breed of sire by sex of calf on birth weight were significant (P < 0.01) and the estimated differences for 22 breeds of sire expressed as deviations from the Hereford breed ranged from − 4.05 to 6.27 kg for male calves and from − 3.70 to 6.20 kg for female calves. The effects of breed of dam, sex of calf, age of dam and all the two-way interactions were significant at P < 0.01, while the three-way interaction was significant at P < 0.05. Additive age of dam adjustment factors within sex of calf were derived for 12 breeds of dam. The general age of dam effects averaged over breed of sire and breed of dam, expressed as deviations from the mature dams, were − 2.69, − 1.27, − 0.41, 0 kg for male calves, and − 2.64, − 1.26, − 0.50, 0 kg for female calves from 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5 + yr-old dams. Calving ease and calf mortality were studied for 4034 calves produced in second and later parities at two locations, Brandon and Manyberries, by contemporary populations of first-cross dams mated to four terminal sire breeds, Charolais (C), Chianina (Chi), Limousin (L) and Simmental (S). The dams represented 10 F1 crosses, the Hereford × Angus (HA) and nine crosses produced by mating C, L and S Bulls with Hereford, Angus and Shorthorn cows. Calving difficulty and mortality were higher among males (P < 0.0001) than females. Calving ease was not influenced by location, but postnatal mortality, particularly of males, was substantially less at Brandon (P < 0.0001). Differences in calving ease among terminal sire progeny groups were not significant when the four breeds were mated to HA dams, but all paired or three-way comparisons involving the Limousin indicated the highest proportion of unassisted births (P < 0.0001) and the lowest incidence of difficult births (P < 0.006) for this sire breed. Terminal sire differences in postnatal mortality were not present among progeny from the HA dams, nor were they observed in the paired comparisons involving progeny of the Chi vs. those of the other three terminal sire breeds. For this trait, however, the paired comparisons among progeny from C, S and L sires indicated a ranking of C > S > L (P < 0.04). Breed of dam's dam (Hereford, Angus, Shorthorn) had no influence of calving ease or mortality, but breed of dam's sire (C, L, S) was important with progeny from L-sired dams having the highest incidence of unassisted births (P < 0.01) and the highest incidence of postnatal mortality (P < 0.06). The proportion of unassisted births increased as the experiment progressed (P < 0.001) and may have been associated with advancing age of the dams. There was, however, a large location × year interaction for this trait (P < 0.002) with Manyberries recording substantially greater calving difficulty than Brandon during the first 3 yr. Interactions involving calf sex, year of birth, breed of terminal sire and location were identified for calving ease. Calf mortality generally increased with increasing calving difficulty but the relationship between calving ease and mortality was influenced by the degree of precalving environmental stress on the dam. Growth patterns of first-cross (F1) and reciprocal backcross cows, 3–5 yr old, were evaluated under two contrasting environments: extensive range conditions at Manyberries, Alberta, and semi-intensive management at Brandon, Manitoba. Cows resulting from crossing Hereford (H) × Angus (A), Simmental (S) × Shorthorn (N), Charolais (C) × Shorthorn and reciprocal backcrosses from Charolais × Hereford (CH), Charolais × Angus (CA), Charolais × Shorthorn (CN), Simmental × Hereford (SH), Simmental × Angus (SA), and Simmental × Shorthorn (SN) were evaluated at Brandon. At Manyberries, HA, SN and reciprocal backcrosses of SH, SA and SN were evaluated. All cows were bred to Limousin (L) bulls. Cow weights and backfat estimates were recorded at breeding, calving and weaning. The HA cows were the lightest group for all weigh periods at both locations. At all weigh periods, the SSN (3/4 S 1/4 N) dam crosses at Manyberries and the CCN (3/4 C 1/4 N) and CCH (3/4 C 1/4 H) at Brandon were the heaviest. At Brandon, females gained weight during gestation and usually lost weight during summer nursing. Cows at Manyberries usually gained weight during nursing, with significant gestation weight loss. Nursing status of the cow had a significant effect on weight change, with barren status providing an opportunity for large compensatory gains. The CN dams were significantly heavier at all weigh periods than their 1/4 C back-crosses. At Brandon, the SN dam cross weights exceeded those of their reciprocal backcrosses at breeding, calving and weaning and at calving for the 1/4 S dams. At Manyberries, SN weights exceeded those of the 3/4 S crosses at weaning. Over the duration of study, average backfat estimates for cows at Brandon exceeded those at Manyberries (10.8 and 8.6 mm, respectively). Specific dam crosses performed differently at the two locations, and commercial cattlemen need to closely evaluate the F1 and backcross comparisons to determine the optimal level of performance under their particular management and environmental conditions. Canadian Simmental Association Young Sire Proving Program records (1978–1982) were used to estimate breed of dam by age of dam by sex of calf effects for several traits. Two models were used. Model 1 included fixed herd-years, breed of dam by age of dam by sex of calf (BAX) plus random sire and residual effects. Model 2 included fixed herd-year by sex of calf and breed of dam by age of dam (BA) plus random sire and residual effects. Both models included additive genetic relationships among sires and maternal grandsires. Traits used with Model 1 were gestation length (GL), calving ease (CE), birth weight (BW), gain on dam (GD) and 200-day weight (WW). Model 2 was used for gain on test (GT) and 365-day weight (YW). Mixed model techniques were used to obtain best linear unbiased estimates of BAX and BA from models 1 and 2, respectively. Hypothesis tests were conducted using two breed of dam groups ([Formula: see text] Simmental (S) and [Formula: see text] British breeds (B)) and four age of dam groups (2, 3, 4 and 5 + yr which correspond to < 31, 31–42, 43–54 and > 54 mo, respectively). Three-way subclasses (BAX) were significant (P < 0.01) for GL, CE, BW, GD and WW as were two-way subclasses (BA) for YW. Estimated differences for breed of dam by age of dam by six of calf subclasses (for GL, CE, BW, GD, WW) and breed of dam by age of dam subclasses (for YW) generally increased as age of dam increased. Accounting for breed of dam, age of dam, sex of calf and interaction effects are important in sire evaluation. Estimated differences of these effects, a by-product of sire evaluation, can be used to increase the accuracy of procedures for individual and dam evaluation.
