AbstractObjectiveThis study investigates whether primary care pediatricians adhere to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendations by routinely evaluating patients’ menstrual cycles and educating patients about menstruation and feminine products. Additionally, this study examines pediatricians’ knowledge and attitudes surrounding menstrual health topics.MethodsA 53-item online questionnaire was developed to evaluate pediatricians’ knowledge, attitudes and clinical practices regarding menstruation-related topics. The questionnaire was emailed to 2500 AAP members using a geographically-stratified sampling approach, with pediatricians in each state selected randomly. Mann-Whitney U tests, t-tests, and logistic regressions were used to assess associations between correlates and pediatricians’ knowledge, attitudes and practices.ResultsFive hundred and eighteen out of 2500 pediatricians participated (response rate = 20.7%), 462 met inclusion criteria; 78.8% were female, 79.2% were Caucasian. The majority of the pediatricians (58.2%) were “not at all” or only “slightly” familiar with the AAP guidelines on anticipatory guidance surrounding menarche. Many reported they do not routinely provide anticipatory guidance regarding menstruation to pre-menarchal patients (24.7%), discuss menstruation with post-menarchal patients (33.1%) or ask patients the date of their last period (28.4%). The majority were unlikely to discuss feminine products with patients. Gaps in menstruation-related knowledge were noted. Male pediatricians were significantly less likely to evaluate patients’ menstrual cycles and provide patient-education regarding menstruation-related topics, and had significantly lower self-rated and measured knowledge of these topics.ConclusionsA concerning number of pediatricians in a national sample do not abide by AAP recommendations surrounding menstruation and exhibit knowledge gaps in this area. To effectively address the health needs of female patients, pediatricians should better incorporate menstrual health care into their clinical practice.

Five cases of electrical injury to young children caused by misuse of components of home cardiorespiratory monitors are reported. The injuries, which included one electrocution, occurred when partially or completely disconnected electrode wires were inserted, by an older monitored child or preschool-aged sibling, into a live power cord or an uncovered wall outlet. Anticipatory guidance of home monitor users should emphasize potential electrical injuries and appropriate injury-control behaviors.

Sibling rivalry is the natural jealousy or dislike feeling of a children to a new child in the family. Preliminary study result obtained 6 (60%) children have sibling rivalry. The purpose of the study was to analyze the relationship of parent role in anticipatory guidance sibling rivalry and emotional intelligence with sibling rivalry incident in preschooler. The design of this research is correlational analytic with cross sectional approach. The independent variable is the parent role in the anticipatory guidance sibling rivalry and emotional intelligence, while the dependent variable is sibling rivalry. The unit of analysis of this study is preschool children who have younger siblings, and the source of information is parents, the sample of 37 children with simple random sampling technique. The data collected from these three research variables used questionnaires. The statistical test using spearman rank with α (0,05). The result of the statistical test shows the value of p value with the alpha significance level α (0,05), mean value of p value < α, so H0 is rejected and H1 accepted, it means there is relation of parent role in anticipatory guidance sibling rivalry and emotional intelligence with incident sibling rivalry preschooler. The results of this study is expected parents can perform its role in anticipatory sibling rivalry and improve the emotional intelligence of children to avoid sibling rivalry between siblings

Background The lack of home learning readiness highly influences the learning process. The preventive way by self-home learning may bring positive effects, namely they will be able to understand the teacher’s explanation or tutorial and do what is being instructed in accomplishing assignments or answering questions. Purpose: was to find out the effects of anticipatory guidance on the learning readiness in the third-grade students of elementary school. Method Quasi-experimental with pretest-posttest control group design. The population involved all third-grade students of SDN Sidomoro 1, Kebomas sub-district, Gresik in which 98 respondents were taken as the samples by applying the total sampling technique. The respondents were then classified into two groups: control group and study group, 48 students each. The instrument: observation sheet. The data analysis using descriptive statistic. Result findings the pre-test value of the study group on good learning readiness was shown by 9 students (34.7%). Compared to the post-test value with the same group, 40 students (81.6%) were in good category. On the other hand, among the control group, the pre-test value showed that 20 students (40.8%) also had good learning readiness, whereas the post-test value described that 17 students (36.7%) were also in good learning readiness. Conclusion Based on the result presented above, providing of anticipatory guidance for students of elementary school is very important to increase the readiness of student’s self-learning for the positive effect, learning achievement.
