Borax is widely used in making various foods such as meatballs, wet noodles, pisang molen, lemper, siomay, lontong, ketupat , and pangsit. Curcumin contained in turmeric can detect the presence of borax content in meatballs by breaking down the borax bonds to boric acid and binding them to rosa color complex compounds called boron compounds cyano curcumin complex. Making a test strip by immobilizing filter paper on the turmeric indicator which has been added polyvinyl pyrrolidone 1% and applied to the meatballs so that it can determine whether there is a borax content in the meatballs. The response time of the test strip is 30 seconds. The test strips of turmeric extract without the addition of polyvinyl pyrrolidone leave the remaining turmeric color in the meatballs while the test strip results of turmeric extract with the addition of polyvinyl pyrrolidone 1% do not leave the remaining turmeric color in the meatballs. The three meatball samples taken in the Pondok Sukorejo area did not contain borax.   Keywords: Borax Content In Meatballs, Strip Test, Turmeric Indicator.

Due to rapid growing of nanotechnology, it is currently being used in many areas including biotechnology, electronics, drug delivery systems, cosmetics, material science and biosensors. Oxidative stress is considered as main cause behind the toxicity of nanoparticles (NPs). Recent reports indicate that boron is effective in protecting cells or organisms against oxidative damages by enhancing antioxidant defense mechanisms. However, protective role of boron compounds in nanotoxicity is not investigated yet. Therefore we assessed the potential protective role of boric acid (BA) and borax (BX) against the toxic responses of nano-Fe3O4 particles (IO NPs) in cultured human whole blood cells. Our results showed that IO NPs induced genotoxicity in human lymphocytes demonstrated by sister chromatid exchange (SCE) and 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG) assays. Again, IO NPs caused decreases of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and decreases of total oxidative stress (TOS) levels in vitro. Co-application of boric acid and borax (2.5 to 10 ppm) into the cell cultures significantly ameliorated genotoxicity and oxidative stress caused by IO NPs. In a conclusion, this study is the first report revealing that BA and BX significantly protected human blood cells from the toxicity of IO NPs, which is mediated through the generation of oxidative stress and depletion of antioxidant capacity.

The boron requirement of the diatom Oylindrotheca fusiformis Reimann & Lewin, grown in liquid culture, was confirmed, Methods are described in which this requirement is also easily demonstrated on agar, when it is satisfied by 10-5M boric acid, Using this agar technique, the ability of various organic (and other) boron compounds to elicit a growth response on boron-deficient agar media was studied. Aqueous solutions of germanium dioxide were inactive. The results are discussed in relation to the various hypotheses regarding the relationship between the chemical structure and biological activity of boron compounds. The results obtained are consistent with the "complexing hypothesis" for the biological activity of borate.

Background. Despite the available information on the clinical manifestations of acute and chronic intoxication with boron compounds, no clear evidence was found among studies to research the effect of boron compounds with different chemical structures on key factors of the blood coagulation system. The data are presented in full for the first time. Aim of the study. Identification of possible signs of the effect of boron compounds on selected indicators of hemostasis in laboratory animals and their characteristics depending on the chemical structure of the compounds. Methods. Modern methods of studying hemostasis are used. Nonlinear rats were chosen as the experimental biological model. Once through the mouth, in the maximum tolerated dose, the following drugs were administered: isopropylmethacarborane, 1,2-di(oxymethyl)orthocarborane, 1,7-di(oxymethyl)methacarborane, polyethylammonium triethylammonium salt, boric acid. Research conducted against a background of dynamic control. Results. Materials were obtained that testify to the effect of boron compounds under the conditions of this experiment on factors of the blood coagulation system. The differences in this effect are established in connection with the chemical structure of the compounds, which are especially pronounced after the introduction of methacarboranes. The effect of orthocarborane and the polyethylammonium triethylammonium salt on factors was less significant. An important fact is that boric acid per se, by its effect on the blood coagulation system, turned out to be less effective than other compared compounds. Conclusion. The polytropy of the toxic effect of boron compounds of different chemical structures was confirmed, including with the involvement of the blood coagulation system, but with the essential features of each of them under conditions of a single exposure to laboratory animals in the maximum tolerated dose.

Abstract. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of boric acid (BA) and borax (BX) on live weight and obesity associated molecules including leptin, L-carnitine, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-I), and heat shock proteins 70 (HSP70) in rats fed with high-fat diet. A total of 60 rats were equally allocated as ND (normal diet), HF (high-fat diet), HF+BA, HF+BX, ND+BX, ND+BA. Body weight increases in HF+BA (85 g) and HF+BX (86 g) were significantly lower (p<0.05) compared to HF group (126 g). Boron treatment decreased serum L-carnitine level in high-fat diet (HF+BA 11.12 mg/L, HF+BX 10.51 mg/L, p<0.05) compared to HF group (15.57 mg/L), while no change was observed in groups ND+BA (7.55 mg/L) and ND+BX (7.57 mg/L) compared to group ND (8.29 mg/L). Neither BA nor BX supplementation in ND and HF groups altered the serum levels of HSP70 and leptin. BA and BX supplementation in rats fed HF resulted in a significant reduction in live weight. Boron compounds altered L-carnitine and IGF-1 levels in rats. These results indicate that boron compounds are beneficial in the treatment of obesity as well as in the prevention of high-fat diet-induced weight increase. Alterations in serum L-carnitine and IGF-1 levels in boron treated rats also indicate possible role of boron compounds in energy metabolism in response to high fat diet.
