The movement of a piston rod in a pneumatic cylinder is directly affected by the air humidity in the atmosphere, especially in the case of piston rods without any means of protection or grease on their surfaces. In a pneumatic cylinder system, the friction between the piston rod and the rod seal is sliding friction, and it has a significant value that varies with the variation in the moisture on the piston rod’s surface. In this paper, an investigation of the friction characteristics of piston rods and rod seals in a pneumatic cylinder was carried out with different humidity and velocity values to understand the effect of lubricants on the moving parts of pneumatic systems in humid environments, where the friction characteristics of the displacements corresponding to the static and dynamic friction forces were displayed on a measuring device. The research results showed that the static friction forces tended to decrease by [Formula: see text] and that the dynamic friction forces tended to decrease by [Formula: see text] when the relative humidity increased from 51% to 99% at different velocities between 5 and 100 mm/s.

The automotive heating and ventilating air condition (HVAC) system, when vibrating, can generate various types of noises such as humming, hissing, clicking and air-rushes. These noises can be characterised to determine their root causes. In this study, the humming-type noise is taken into consideration whereby the noise and vibration characteristics are measured from various HVAC components such as power steering pump, compressor and air conditional pipe. Four types of measurement sensors were used in this study - tachometer for rpm tracking; accelerometer for the vibration microphone for the noise; and sound camera for the visualization measurement. Two types of operating conditions were taken into consideration - they were “idle” (850 rpm) and “running” (850-1400 rpm) conditions. A constant blower speed was applied for both conditions. The result shows that the humming noises can be determined at the frequency range of 300-350 Hz and 150-250 Hz for both idle and running conditions, respectively. The vibration of the power steering pump shows the worst acceleration of 1.8 m/s2 at the frequency range of 150-250 Hz, compared to the compressor and air conditional pipe. This result was validated with the 3D colour order and sound camera analyses, in which the humming noise colour mapping shows dominance in this frequency range.

Abstract This paper describes experimental and analytical studies of the dependence of tire friction on the surface roughness of pavement. Abrasive papers were adopted as representative of the microscopic surface roughness of pavement surfaces. The rolling∕sliding friction of tire tread rubber against these abrasive papers were measured at low slip velocities. Experimental results indicated that rolling∕sliding frictional characteristics depended on the surface roughness. In order to examine the interfacial phenomena between rubber and the abrasive papers, real contact length, partial slip, and apparent friction coefficient under vertical load and tangential force were analyzed with two-dimensional explicit finite element analysis in which slip-velocity-dependent frictional coefficients were considered. Finite element method results indicated that the sum of real contact area and local partial slip were larger for finer surfaces under the same normal and tangential forces. In addition, the velocity-dependent friction enhanced local slip, where the dependence of local slip on surface roughness was pronounced. It proved that rolling∕sliding friction at low slip ratio was affected by local frictional behavior at microslip regions at asperity contacts.

The problems of changes in the coating structure depending on the composition of the sprayed mechanical mixture using copper particles and mixture of copper and zinc particles (" brass") and the effect of structural factors on the tribological properties of the deposited metal layer are considered. The results of X-ray structural, phase, chemical and durometric analyzes, as well as tribological testing of coatings are presented. It is found that structure with hardness of ≈102.7 HV is formed in the coating from mechanical mixture of particles of copper and aluminum oxide (corundum). Numerous pores are observed in the structure of the deposited metal layer, the main size of which does not exceed 2 μm. In the coating from mechanical mixture of particles copper, zinc and aluminum oxide (corundum), structure is formed based on copper with hardness of ≈106.5 HV, zinc — ≈49.7 HV, intermetallic compounds (γ- and ε-phases) — ≈168.7 HV, the mass fraction of which is 62.0, 7.9 and 24.2 %, respectively. Both coatings can be used in sliding friction pairs.
