Background: Significant bacteriuria is commonly reported in pregnancy which greatly predisposes pregnant women to urinary tract infection (UTI), one of the commonest health challenges in pregnancy worldwide especially in developing countries such as Nigeria. The objectives of this study are to determine the prevalence of and factors associated with significant bacteriuria among pregnant women attending the antenatal clinic (ANC) of Adeoyo Maternity Hospital, Yemetu, Ibadan, Nigeria, as well as determine the bacterial aetiology and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of the isolates.Methodology: This is a laboratory-based cross-sectional study of 206 pregnant women between the ages of 15 and 47 years attending the ANC of the hospital, selected by simple random sampling method. Demographic and clinical data were obtained from the subjects using a structured questionnaire. Clean-catch specimen of mid-stream voided urine was collected from each subject participant. Urine samples were processed for culture and isolation of significant bacterial pathogens using standard bacteriological methods, and isolates identified to species level by the combination of colony morphology, Gram reaction, conventional biochemical tests and Analytical Profile Index (API) 20E test kits. Antibiotic susceptibility testing of the isolates to selected antibiotics was performed using the disk diffusion method.Results: The prevalence of significant bacteriuria in the study population was 8.7% (18/206), with 27.8% (5/18) symptomatic and 72.2% (13/18) asymptomatic. All isolated bacteria were Gram-negative with the most frequent being Escherichia coli 9 (50.0%), followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae 6 (33.3%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa 1 (5.6%), Acinetobacter haemolyticus 1 (5.6%) and Enterobacter aerogenes 1 (5.6%). The isolates were most sensitive to gentamicin (100%) and nitrofurantoin (94.4%), while they demonstrated highest resistance to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (33.3%). Significant bacteriuria was associated with pyuria (p=0.01) and past history of UTI (p=0.004).Conclusions: The high prevalence of asymptomatic significant bacteriuria in this study necessitates the need for screening and treatment of pregnant women for this entity to prevent the subsequent development of UTI that may have grave consequences on pregnancy outcome.   French title: Prévalence et facteurs associés à une bactériurie significative chez les femmes enceintes fréquentant la clinique prénatale de la maternité Adeoyo, Yemetu, Ibadan, Nigéria Contexte: Une bactériurie importante est couramment signalée pendant la grossesse, ce qui prédispose grandement les femmes enceintes aux infections des voies urinaires (IVU), l'un des problèmes de santé les plus courants pendant la grossesse dans le monde, en particulier dans les pays en développement comme le Nigéria. Les objectifs de cette étude sont de déterminer la prévalence et les facteurs associés à une bactériurie significative chez les femmes enceintes fréquentant la clinique prénatale (CPN) de l'hôpital de maternité Adeoyo, Yemetu, Ibadan, Nigéria, ainsi que de déterminer l'étiologie bactérienne et les modèles de sensibilité aux antimicrobiens de les isolats. Méthodologie: Il s'agit d'une étude transversale en laboratoire portant sur 206 femmes enceintes âgées de 15 à 47 ans fréquentant les CPN de l'hôpital, sélectionnées par une méthode d'échantillonnage aléatoire simple. Les données démographiques et cliniques ont été obtenues auprès des sujets à l'aide d'un questionnaire structuré. Un échantillon propre d'urine évacuée à mi-chemin a été recueilli auprès de chaque participant sujet. Les échantillons d'urine ont été traités pour la culture et l'isolement d'agents pathogènes bactériens importants à l'aide de méthodes bactériologiques standard, et les isolats ont été identifiés au niveau de l'espèce par la combinaison de la morphologie de la colonie, de la réaction de Gram, des tests biochimiques conventionnels et des kits de test de l'indice de profil analytique (API) 20E. Les tests de sensibilité aux antibiotiques des isolats aux antibiotiques sélectionnés ont été effectués à l'aide de la méthode de diffusion sur disque. Résultats: La prévalence de la bactériurie significative dans la population étudiée était de 8,7% (18/206), avec 27,8% (5/18) symptomatique et 72,2% (13/18) asymptomatique. Toutes les bactéries isolées étaient Gram-négatives, la plus fréquente étant Escherichia coli 9 (50,0%), suivie de Klebsiella pneumoniae 6 (33,3%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa 1 (5,6%), Acinetobacter haemolyticus 1 (5,6%) et Enterobacter aerogenes 1 (5,6%). Les isolats étaient les plus sensibles à la gentamicine (100%) et à la nitrofurantoïne (94,4%), alors qu'ils présentaient la résistance la plus élevée à l'amoxicilline-acide clavulanique (33,3%). Une bactériurie significative était associée à une pyurie (p=0,01) et à des antécédents d'infection urinaire (p=0,004). Conclusions: La prévalence élevée de bactériurie significative asymptomatique dans cette étude nécessite le dépistage et le traitement des femmes enceintes pour cette entité afin de prévenir le développement ultérieur d'infections urinaires pouvant avoir de graves conséquences sur l'issue de la grossesse.

Background. In pregnancy, anemia is an important factor associated with an increased risk of maternal, fetal, and neonatal mortality, poor pregnancy outcomes, and impaired cognitive development, particularly in developing countries like Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess prevalence and factors associated with anemia among pregnant women attending antenatal clinic at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Method. A cross-sectional health facility based study was conducted on 284 pregnant women to assess prevalence and factors associated with anemia at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College from June to August 2014. Data on sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the study participants were collected using a pretested structured questionnaire by interview and review of medical records. About 4 ml of venous blood was collected from each subject for peripheral blood film and complete blood counts (CBC). Binary Logistic regression analysis had been used to check for association between dependent and independent variables. In all cases, P value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Result. The prevalence of anemia was found to be 11.6% (95 % CI; 7.8%-14.8%). Pregnant women in the second [AOR (95% CI), 6.72 (1.17-38.45), and P=0.03] and third trimester [AOR (95% CI), 8.31 (1.24-55.45), and P=0.029] were more likely to be anemic when compared to pregnant women in their first trimester. Pregnant women who did not receive iron/folic acid supplementation [AOR (95%CI), 4.03(1.49-10.92), and P=0.01] were more likely to be anemic when compared to pregnant women who did take supplementations. Conclusion. In this study the prevalence of anemia in pregnancy was low compared to the findings of others. Gestational age (trimester) and iron/folic acid supplementation were statistically associated with anemia. Therefore, iron supplementation and health education to create awareness about the importance of early booking for antenatal care are recommended to reduce anemia.

Abstract Background: The burden of anemia in pregnancy is of global health importance. Tanzania is no exception. It varies from one region to another owing to the differences in causes, but overall causing a significant burden of maternal mortality. This study sought to assess the prevalence and factors associated with anemia among pregnant women attending antenatal clinic (ANC) at Mkuranga district in Pwani region of TanzaniaMethods: This cross-sectional study design was conducted among 418 pregnant women aged 15-49 years attending the Mkuranga district hospital and Kilimahewa health centre. The outcome variable of interest was anemia in pregnancy defined as haemoglobin concentration of 13g/dl. Data was collected using face to face interviews with a standardized pretested questionnaire, and through blood samples collected for haemoglobin testing. Descriptive analysis was used to determine the prevalence of anemia while multiple logistic regression was used to determine factors associated with anemia in pregnancy. Results: Anemia was prevalent among 83.5% of pregnant women attending the two major antenatal clinics in Mkuranga district were anemic. Of them, 29% presented with mild anemia, while 62% had moderate anemia, and 0.09% succumbed to severe anemia. Factors associated with anemia included being in the third trimester [AOR=2.87, p=0.026]; not consuming vegetables (AOR=2.62, p=0.008), meat (AOR=2.71, p=0.003), eggs (AOR=2.98, p=0.002), and fish (AOR=2.38, p=0.005). Conclusion: More than eight in ten pregnant women attending ANC in Mkuranga districts were anemic. Such unprecedented burden of anemia is associated with a number of factors including feeding practices such as not consuming iron-rich foods like vegetables, meat, eggs, and fish. Women in their third trimester were also more likely to suffer from anemia. This unprecedented burden of anemia in pregnancy can be addressed if efforts to improve feeding practices and early monitoring at the antenatal clinics are sustained.

Background: Anemia in pregnancy is a major public health problem especially in Low and Middle-income countries (LMIC) including Ghana and is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as being present when the hemoglobin concentration in the peripheral blood is 11g/dl or less. In most African countries anemia in pregnancy occurs if the hemoglobin concentration falls below 10g/dl. Pregnant women are at a higher risk of developing anemia due to several factors such as hemodilution, nutritional factors, multiple gestation, socio-economic status and malaria infestation. Anemia in pregnancy is an important cause of maternal mortality and affects half of pregnant women worldwide; with 56% of West African pregnant women being anemic. The objective of this study is to assess the prevalence and identify the risk factors associated with anemia among pregnant women receiving antenatal care at the West Gonja Hospital (WGH) Methods: A cross-sectional was conducted with 136 pregnant women receiving antenatal care at the WGH between January 2017 to February 2018. Random sampling was used to select participants and data was collected using a structured questionnaire. Data was analyzed using the SPSS Version 24.0. Results: A total 71(52.2%) of the study population were anemic, while 65 (47.8%) were not anemic. 20(74.1%) of the 27 pregnant housewives were anemic, while 11(64.7%) of the pregnant farmers were anemic. 27 (96.4%) of the 28 pregnant women who took their iron/folate supplement only some few days were anemic. 12 (100%) of the 12 participants who took their iron/folate supplement a few times a week were anemic. 4 (80%) of the 5 participants who never took their iron/folate supplement were anemic. 21 (70%) of those who did not sleep under ITN were anemic. 33 (84.6%) of the 39 patients who were diagnosed with malaria were also anemic. 28 (87.5%) of the 32 participants who took only 2 meals a day were anemic. 27 (79.4%) of the 34 patients who took liver, beef, chicken and fish only twice weekly were anemic. 15 (88.2%) of the 17 patients who drank tea some days in a week were anemic. Conclusion: Although most of the pregnant women were adequately educated on the most relevant aspects of anemia in pregnancy, more than half of them were still anemic. Anemia was more prevalent among pregnant uneducated housewives with poor nutritional habits. All the pregnant sickle cell disease patients as well as those diagnosed with malaria were also anemic.

Abstract BackgroundThere is widespread use of herbal medicines among populations in sub-Saharan Africa. However, pregnant women should be conscious about medication taken during pregnancy including herbal medicines because their safety profiles are not known and some of them might affect the mother, fetus and pregnancy outcomes. Knowledge about use and safety of herbs in pregnant women is limited. This study aimed to assess the extent of use and the factors associated with use of herbal medicine in pregnancy.MethodsA cross-sectional study involving 385 women 6 weeks post-partum and below, receiving post-natal services at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital in Western Uganda was conducted during May to August 2016. Simple random sampling was used to select participants. A structured pretested questionnaire was administered after written informed consent. Data was analyzed using logistic regression (STATA- 14).ResultsOf 385 respondents, 70.4% reported to have used herbal medicine during their most recent pregnancy. Associated factors were perception that herbal medicines are safe (aOR 9.8, 95% CI (4.2-23.0), perception that herbal medicines are important (aOR 12.4, 95% CI (5.2-29.5), staying more than 10KM from the heath facility (aOR 3.1, 95%CI (1.4-6.9), being a first time mother (aOR 2.6, 95%CI (1.1-6.2) and dissatisfaction with ANC services at health facility (aOR 2.6, 95%CI (1.1-6.3)ConclusionHerbal medicine use in pregnancy is common in the study area. Community Sensitization drives about the dangers of herbal medicine use in pregnancy is recommended. Healthcare workers should routinely screen for herbal medicine use during antenatal care visits and labor.

Abstract Background This study aimed to assess magnitude and factors associated with anemia among pregnant women attending antenatal clinic at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods Institution based cross sectional study design was conducted from December 1–30, 2018 on 405 pregnant women attending antenatal clinic. All pregnant women visiting the Antenatal care clinic during the study period and who fulfilled the eligibility criteria were included in the study. Secondary data was collected from clients register and personal files on hemoglobin, HIV, stool, and other variables. Descriptive statistics was used to analysis some variables by using SPSS. Logistic regression was carried out to identify factors associated with anemia in pregnancy. Adjusted odds ratio with their 95% of confidence interval and p < 0.05 are consider to have significant association. Results The magnitude of Anemia in pregnant women in this study was 19.8%, (95% CI 16.00-23.70). HIV infection (AOR = 6.12(95% CI 2.19, 17.08) parasitic infestation (AOR = 11.88 (95% CI 5.60, 25.20) and history of not taking fruit after meal during pregnancy (AOR = 3.12(95% CI 1.72, 5.67) were the major determinants of anemia. Conclusion This study showed that the magnitude of anemia among pregnant women was high especially at third trimester. Living with HIV /AIDS, parasitic infestation and no history of taking fruits after meal were the main factors.

Abstract Background. It is of great public health significance to monitor the global meiosis mother-to-child transmission plan proposed by WHO and monitor the prevalence of maternal syphilis and the factors affecting mother-to-child transmission. Methods. We collected 271 medical records of prenatally diagnosed (from 87286 pregnant women) of syphilis among pregnant women a maternity hospital in Jilin Province China from 2013 to 2017. The chi-square test and Logistic multiple regression analysis were used to describe the clinical characteristics of pregnant women with syphilis and the related factors of adverse pregnancy outcome. Results. The average prevalence of maternal syphilis is 0.31% (95%[CI]: 0.27%-0.35%). The mean age of 271 pregnant women with syphilis is 27.62±5.4 years old. The maternal syphilis prevalence of absence of paid occupation is 73.8%; rural population accounts for 43.6%. Maternal women with a history of abortion accounted for 43.1%, of which 53.1% had abortion ≥2; The average rate of treatment in pregnancy is 25.5% (95%[CI]: 25.4%-25.6%). The prevalence rate of APOs are 43.9% (95%[CI]: 38.1%-49.9%), declined in five years (P<0.05). APOs was significantly higher in women at 30–34 age group than that in 0-24 age group (OR= 2.916, 95%CI: 1.298-6.549) and higher in Un-treatment in pregnancy than that in receive treatment (OR=2.469, 95%CI:1.225-4.975). PROM occurrence (OR=2.702, 95%CI:1.219-5.988); CRP elevation (≥10 mg/L) and RPR high titer (≥1:8) are related to the occurrence of APOs. Abortion, prematurity and low birth weight are associated with no treatment during pregnancy (P<0.05). Comparison of 42 cases of pregnancy-induced hypertension and non-pregnancy-induced hypertension, Dysmenorrhea (OR= 3.654, 95%CI:1.812-7.369) and elevated urine protein (OR= 2.259, 95%CI:1.161-4.394) are the influencing factors of maternal syphilis complicated with pregnancy-induced hypertension. Conclusions. The prevalence of maternal syphilis in northern China is lower than that of 10 years ago, but the decline is still lower than that in the economically developed regions of the south. The rate of non-treatment of syphilis during pregnancy is high, and should be alert to the rebound of maternal syphilis.

Background: Thyroid disorders are among the common endocrine problems in pregnant women. Often overlooked in pregnancy due to nonspecific symptoms and hyper-metabolic state of pregnancy. Western literature shows prevalence of hypothyroidism in pregnancy as 2.5% and hypothyroidism as 0.1-0.4%. There is paucity of data on prevalence of thyroid disorders in India pregnant population. This study was carried out to know prevalence of thyroid disorders in pregnant women in Indian population.Methods: One hundred pregnant women attending antenatal clinic in first trimester were registered. Detailed history and examination was done. Apart from routine basic and obstetrical investigations, TSH, FT3 and FT4 level estimation was done.Results: Prevalence of thyroid dysfunction was high in this study in first trimester pregnant women, with subclinical hypothyroidism in 6%, overt hypothyroidism in 2%, subclinical hyperthyroidism 2 % and overt hyperthyroidism 0%.Conclusions: Prevalence of thyroid disorders, especially subclinical hypothyroidism (6%), overt hypothyroidism (2%) and subclinical hyperthyroidism (2%) was high. To prevent adverse effects on maternal and fetal outcome, we are emphasizing the importance of routine antenatal thyroid screening.
