The usual quiet morning of Good Friday, April 10, 2020, was shattered by the spreading news of the death of Professor Jacob Plange-Rhule. For many persons the news elicited sentiments of grief and outpouring of statements on the good natureof the third Rector of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. Even though he died at the age of 62 years, his footprints will remain in several places where his feet hath trod in academia, medical education, medical ‘politics’, golf andfamily life.

Background: Problematic practices performed by doctors and clinical phase students often be found in the workplace settings. Common problems related to team working is the highest rated problems. To overcome this problem, we designed an elective course, Medical Education block (ME) and have implemented the course since 2014. This study aimed to find topics in ME which were meaningful toward medical student’s practices. Methods: A Delphi method were utilized. The experts were the subjects themselves to acknowledge that they were the participants of the ME block, other elective blocks, and clerkship. There were 21 respondents consisted of 2012, 2013 and 2014 bathces. All the subjects were in their clerkship or at the end of their education. They were divided into two groups: who enrolled in ME (n=10), and other blocks (n=11). The questionnaire was consisted of three parts. The first part listed 5 main topics with responses of agree/disagree. The second part listed the same topics, but subjects needed to response the weight on each topic. The last part listed 27 topics in ME Block that might or might not relate to clerkship. Responses were given in agree/disagree. Results: Using two-rounded Delphi method, we found the average of rate of agreement (roa) on the first round was 88% and the second was 81%. There were only 2 statements of the second part which had roa >70%. Thus, the second part went to the 2nd round together with the 3 statements of the third parts. Finally, there were only 2 statements of the second parts achieved roa and there were 2 topics left undecided of the third part. Conclusion: Few topics which were proven useful for medical students were personal education, medical education research, and professionalism. Keywords: practices, medical education, elective course

Abstract Context In the past decade, two changes have affected the pathology residency match. First, the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Match, which did not offer pathology residency, became accredited under a single graduate medical education (GME) system with the Main Residency Match (MRM), which offers pathology residency. Second, substantially fewer United States senior-year allopathic medical students (US MD seniors) matched into pathology residency. Objective To determine whether there were major changes in the number and percentage of osteopathic students and physicians (DOs) matching into pathology residency programs over the past decade. Methods Pathology match outcomes for DOs from 2011 to 2020 were obtained by reviewing AOA Match data from the National Matching Services and MRM data from the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). The number of DOs that filled pathology positions in the MRM was divided by the total number of pathology positions filled in the MRM to calculate the percentage of pathology positions taken by DOs. Results Over the past decade, there was a 109% increase in the total number of DOs matching into pathology residency (34 in 2011 vs. 71 in 2020). During this time, there was a 23.3% increase in the total number of pathology positions filled in the MRM (476 in 2011 vs. 587 in 2020). Thus, the percentage of pathology residency positions filled by DOs increased from 7.1% in 2011 to 12.1% in 2020. The substantial increase of DOs in pathology occurred simultaneously with a 94.2% increase in the total number of DOs filling AOA/MRM “postgraduate year 1” (PGY-1) positions (3201 in 2011 vs. 6215 in 2020). Thus, the percentage of DOs choosing pathology residency has remained steady (1.06% in 2011 and 1.14% in 2020). In 2020, pathology had the third lowest percentage of filled PGY-1 residency positions taken by DOs, out of 15 major medical specialties. Conclusion The proportion of DOs choosing pathology residency was stable from 2011 to 2020 despite the move to a single GME accreditation system and the stark decline in US MD seniors choosing pathology. In 2020, a slightly higher percentage of DOs (1.14%) chose pathology residency than US MD seniors (1.13%). Overall, DOs more often choose other medical specialties, including primary care. Additional studies are needed to determine why fewer US MD seniors, but not fewer DOs, are choosing pathology residency.

After his classical high school education in Chatellerault, Gilles de la Tourette moved to Poitiers for his medical studies, which he then pursued in Paris. This chapter covers his student days and his career path within the hospital and university hierarchies and brings additional interesting information on the system of university examinations and French medical education. The author also discusses Gilles de la Tourette’s relationships with other notables of the time, for example, with Jules Claretie and Sigmund Freud, and his opinions regarding the legal affairs that marked his time. Unpublished archives are used to explore Georges Gilles de la Tourette’s numerous literary and medical activities.

Northern Ireland has had a devolved legislature and government, off and on, since 1921. This chapter first examines the nature of the devolution arrangements in place between 1921 and 1972 and then explains what was done to keep Northern Ireland running during the periods of direct rule from Westminster and Whitehall between 1972 and 1999 and between 2002 and 2007. The third section looks at how devolution operated under the Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement from 1999 to 2002 and from 2007 to 2017. The chapter then considers the reasons for the failure since 2017 to get devolution re-established and concludes by canvassing what the future constitutional arrangements for Northern Ireland might be. Taken in the round, Northern Ireland’s experience of devolution during the past 98 years has been very troubled. Brexit, alas, seems unlikely to make it less so in the years ahead.

In order to develop a comprehensive methodology for outpatient psychiatric care for children and adolescents that can improve the social adaptation of patients, we analyzed the data of long-term clinical catamnestic follow-up of a cohort of patients with various mental disorders in childhood and adolescence. The methods of psychotherapy, psycho-education and medical education suitable for outpatient care are discussed.

A case study of the process of foreign intervention in medical education in the developing world is presented. Material collected from the Rockefeller Foundation Archives on a Foundation program in Thailand is used to analyze the conditions under which foreign agencies and their personnel intervene in the development of medical professionals in the Third World and to study the problems that may occur as a result of such intervention. The importance of value consensus and the competitive advantage foreigners have in the marketing of professional models are highlighted as reasons for the diffusion of Western models of medical education throughout the developing world.

Background: Imposter syndrome is characterized by chronic feelings of self-doubt and fear of being discovered as an intellectual fraud. Despite evidence of abilities, those suffering from imposter syndrome are unable to internalize a sense of accomplishment, competence, or skill. Overall, they believe themselves to be less intelligent and competent than others perceive them to be. IS has several potential implications for medical education. The current study was designed to find out the frequency of imposter syndrome among medical students college so that certain measures must be taken to improve the teaching and learning methodologies as well as the curriculum.Methods: A cross-sectional, psycho-social analysis was conducted from March to July, 2018 at Nishtar Medical College, Multan after taking informed consent from the students. Clance Imposter Phenomenon Sclae (CIPS) was used to assess the prevalence and degree of severity of Imposter syndrome among medical chosen on basis of random sampling. The data collected was entered and analysed on SPSS v.20.Results: Two hundred (200) students were selected for the study and were asked to return the completed 20 items questionnaire. One hundred and eighty-nine (189) students returned the questionnaires, so the response rate was 94.5%. Out of 189 students, 121(64.36%) were males and 68(35.97%) were females. According to Clance imposter phenomenon scoring, of the total 189 students the severity of imposter syndrome is as follows: mild, 5(2.64%), moderate,72(38.09%), severe,103(54.49%) and very severe, 09(4.76%). Moreover, third year students were found to have high prevalence and degree of severity of imposter syndrome.Conclusions: Imposter phenomenon exists in a significant percentage of medical students and appears to peak in the third year of medical school. Both genders are at equal risk of having imposter syndrome. It is associated with various psychological illnesses. Further discussion regarding medical education paradigms in light of high levels of imposter phenomenon is needed.
