A large-scale trial embankment provided with partially penetrating prefabricated vertical drains (PVD) was installed in consolidating marine clay deposits at East-Port said industrial zone project in Egypt. The trial embankment was constructed with a bottom area of 150x150m and a height of 5.5m to evaluate the efficiency of the improvement system and verify the design parameters. An intensive instrumentation system was built-up including shallow settlement indicators, vibrating wire piezometers, extensometer, and inclinometers. Two and three-dimensional finite element analyses (FE) were performed to study the effect of the preloading system provided with partially PVD in consolidating marine clay deposits. FE models were validated and showed good agreement with the field observations in terms of vertical displacement of embankment center, and lateral soil deformation beneath the embankment toe.

Installation of prefabricated vertical drains using a mandrel causes disturbance of clay surrounding the drain, resulting in a "smear" zone of reduced permeability. In this paper, an attempt is made to characterize the smear zone using large-scale laboratory model tests. Two tests, simulating the cases of "no smear" and "with smear," were conducted. Excess pore-water pressures were monitored at seven different locations along the radial direction. In addition, undisturbed samples were collected at various locations in the clay layer for conducting oedometer tests. The distribution of excess pore pressure due to drain installation gave a clear indication of the extent of the smear zone. The effect of reconsolidation on the properties of clay was found to be much greater than that of the remoulding of the clay. The extent of the smear zone was also confirmed from the change in permeability of the clay layer in the smear zone obtained from oedometer tests. The radius of the smear zone is about four times that of the mandrel, and the horizontal permeability of the clay layer in the smear zone is approximately 1.3 times smaller than that in the intact zone.Key words: consolidation, permeability, smear zone, soft clay, vertical drains.

This case study presents the design, operation, and results of a soil improvement project using the vacuum preloading method on 480 000 m2 of reclaimed land in Xingang Port, Tianjing, China. The areas treated with vacuum ranged from 5000 to 30 000 m2. The effects of soil improvement are demonstrated through the average consolidation settlement of 2.0 m and increases in undrained shear strengths by a factor of two to four or more. The study shows that the vacuum method is an effective tool for the consolidation of very soft, highly compressive clayey soils over a large area. The technique is especially feasible in cases where there is a lack of surcharge loading fills, extremely low shear strength, soft ground adjacent to critical slopes, and access to a power supply.Key words: vacuum preloading consolidation, soil improvement, soft clays, land reclamation, prefabricated vertical drains.

Brown coal is young, shallowly deposited, and widely distributed in the world. It is a fuel commonly used to generate electricity. This paper first reviews the resources and characteristics of brown coal in Victoria, Australia, and its exploitation and contribution to the economy or power supply in Victoria. Due to the shallow depth of the brown coal seam, e.g. very favorable stripping ratio, open pit mining is the only mining method used to extract the coal at low cost for power generators. With the large-scale mining operations, cases of batter failure were not rare in the area. From the comprehensive review of past failures, overburden batter tends to fail by circular sliding, coal batter tends to fail by block sliding after the overburden is stripped due to a weak water-bearing layer underneath the coal seam and tension cracks developed at the rear of the batter, and batter failure is typically coincided with peak raining seasons. Secondly, the paper reviews the case study of Maddingley Brown Coal (MBC) Open Cut Mine batter stability, including geology, hydrogeology, and hydro-mechanically coupled numerical modelling. The modelling employs three-dimensional finite element method to simulate the MBC northern batter where cracks were observed in November 2013. The comprehensive simulation covers an overburden batter, a brown coal batter, two rainfall models, and a buttressed batter. The simulated results agree well with observed data, and it is found that the rainfall at the intensity of 21mm substantially lowered the factor of safety of the coal batter.

A torpedo base is a type of conductor casing that embeds into the seabed mainly by free fall using its own weight as driving energy. One of the advantages of this concept is to install the conductor casing before the dynamic positioned (DP) drillship arrival at the location. This reduces the time of the well drilling leading to significant cost saving. However, the need to withstand the challenging loads of the ultra-deep water scenarios pushed the typical torpedo base design to its limit and, consequently, modifications to its original geometry and more accurate design models are needed. Therefore, in this work, a new torpedo base, designed to sustain high axial loads in very soft clays, is analyzed with a three-dimensional finite element (FE) model. This model accounts for the setup-effects of the soil with the use of a previously proposed analytical approach to estimate the stress state of the soil at any time after the installation of the base. The results obtained indicate that the axial holding capacity of the base varies along time. The holding capacity increase rapidly at the beginning of the installation, but this rate reduces after the first days. Depending on soil characteristics, full axial capacity may be reached more than one year after the installation of the base. Moreover, the use of more than four fins welded to the shaft of the conductor casing modifies the shear zone along the base, but does not contribute to a significant increase in the axial holding capacity.

The underwater structure of power house is major structure under the dynamic loads of unit. The vibration problem is very common in operation. So the structures should have sufficient stiffness to resist dynamic loads of unit. This paper establishes three-dimensional finite element models with finite element analysis software—ANSYS. Dynamic characteristics of the power house and dynamic responses of structure under earthquake are analyzed. The results of the computation show that fluid-solid coupling may be ignored when studying dynamic characteristics of structures of the underground power house.

The seismic analysis on reactor structure was performed with a new generation of finite element software. The amount of freedom degree of the model was more than twenty millions. The typical responses to operational basis earthquake excitation were given. They are larger than those with two-dimensional simplified finite element method, and the reasons of this phenomenon were analyzed. The feasibility of seismic analysis on large-scale three-dimensional finite element model under existing hardware condition was demonstrated, so some technological reserves for dynamic analysis on complicated equipments or systems in nuclear engineering are provided.
