Effect of organic mulch materials on maize performance and weed growth in the derived savanna of south eastern Nigeria.

Quantitative data on carbon stock (C stock) in and beyond the topsoil (0–30 cm) under natural terrestrial ecosystems in West African savanna could provide information about their relative potential, and management options, for C sequestration, but these data are still scanty in the region. In selected locations (Nsukka, Obimo, and Ibagwa-aka) in the derived savanna zone of south-eastern Nigeria, secondary forest (SFT), grassland fallow (GLF), and bare footpath (BFP) were sampled from the topsoils (0–30 cm) and subsoils (30–60 cm) in triplicate. The soils are generally sandy, with low (1.4–13.8%) mean silt content. Mean bulk density ranged from 1.30 to 1.83 Mg/m3. The soils were acidic (pHwater 4.0–4.8) and low in organic C (0.10–1.14%). There was a consistent trend in C stock (SFT > GLF > BFP) in the topsoil, whereas only higher values in SFT than BFP were consistent in the subsoil. In both soil layers, the scale of the differences among the land-cover types was location-specific. Values of C stock were higher in the topsoil than subsoil, except for GLF and BFP at Obimo due to recent bush burning. Irrespective of location, the mean topsoil–subsoil values under SFT, GLF, and BFP were 45.7–30.6, 27.7–25.8, and 19.0–18.8 Mg/ha, respectively. Soil structural stability, indexed as the ratio of organic matter to silt + clay, explained roughly 61 and 89% of the variability in C stock of topsoils and subsoils, respectively. These results should benefit the planning of C sequestration projects in savanna agroecosystems of West Africa.

Utilization of mulch could reduce competition between weeds and soybean crop for water, light, nutrient, maintaining temperature and humidity of soil to create better growth of soybean environment. Soybean crop had a critical period of weeds competition so that siam weed organic mulch should be applied to control weeds at certain time. The research aims to improve the yield of soybean crop that is influenced by application times of siam weed mulch. This study had defferent time of mulch aplications treatment such as at the time of planting, 7 days after planting (DAP), and 14 DAP. The results of this reserch showed that application times had not effected significantly at all parameter. The result also showed the earlier application time of siam weed organic mulch it was on planting time had decreased weed growth then increased yield of soybean. Background: The amniotic fluid is fundamental for proper fetal development and growth. Ultrasound visualization of the amniotic fluid permits both subjective and objective estimates of the amniotic fluid. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the reference values of normal single deepest pocket (SDP) – upper and lower limits, mean SDP and variation of the SDP with gestational age among Igbo women of South-Eastern Nigeria extraction carrying uncomplicated singleton pregnancy. Methodology: This was a prospective cross sectional study involving 400 women carrying uncomplicated singleton pregnancies and who were sure of the date of the first day of their last menstrual period. The single deepest pocket / maximum vertical pool were determined once at presentation at the hospital.. The study was conducted from January 1st to December 31st 2015. The second author carried out all the scanning. The SDP was obtained. Results: The womens’ mean and median ages were the same at 28 years. The gestational age range of the pregnancies was 14-41 weeks. The mean SDP was 5.8cm, while the 5th and 95th percentiles were 3.3cm and 8.5cm respectively. There was no difference in the mean SDP in both term and preterm. There was irregular but continuous rise of mean SDP to a peak of 6.8cm at gestational age of 39 weeks. In conclusion, the participants had a mean SDP of 5.8cm. There was also a positive correlation between SDP and Gestational age. We therefore recommend a longitudinal study to assess perinatal outcome and abnormal amniotic fluid volume among Igbo women of South-Eastern Nigeria.
