Purpose: To investigate the bioactive and nutritional properties, as well as rapid chemical characterization of aqueous extract of Annona muricata leaf from Mexico Methods: The crude aqueous extract of A. muricata leaf was obtained by decoction. Cytotoxicity was tested against cervicouterine cancer cells (HeLa) using methyl thiazol tetrazolium (MTT) assay. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using 2, 2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. Nutritional evaluation was carried out according to Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) procedures. Rapid qualitative chemical characterization of the extract was carried out by direct analysis in real-time mass spectrometry (DART-MS) method. Results: The aqueous extract of A. muricata leaf showed cytotoxicity against HeLa cells and also antioxidant activity in a concentration-dependent manner. Nutritional analysis revealed the presence of carbohydrates, vitamin C, Na, and Fe in the aqueous extract. DART-MS spectra showed the presence of alkaloids and phenols as the major components. Conclusion: The cytotoxic and antioxidant activities of the aqueous extract of A. muricata leaf lend some support for its traditional uses as anti-cancer remedy. These activities are probably due to its active secondary metabolites. Thus, the aqueous extract is a source of healthy nutritional components as well as a potential anti-cancer agent for humans.

Background: Plants comprise great antioxidant sources as a result of their redox and biochemical components, which are rich in secondary metabolites such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, and other constituents. Haplophyllum obtusifolium from polygonaceae is widely used for preventing and managing diabetes. This study investigated the antibacterial and antioxidant activities of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) biosynthesized by H. obtusifolium. Methods: The aerial parts of H. obtusifolium were gathered from the north of Khorasan Razavi province, Iran and desiccated at the chamber temperature. The shoots were powdered by grinding, 5 g of the powder was mixed with 250 mL of deionized water, and the resultant blend was then filtered. Bactericidal properties and antioxidant activity of the nanoparticles were assessed using disk diffusion and DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) tests, respectively. Results: The results of this study showed that the biosynthesized nanoparticles exhibited antibacterial activity against a gram-negative (Klebsiella pneumoniae) bacterium, but they had no effects on gram-positive Staphylococcus epidermidis. Antioxidant test results showed that these nanoparticles were capable of eliminating DPPH radicals in a concentration-dependent manner so that a more potent antioxidant activity was seen in higher concentrations of the nanoparticles. Conclusion: Our results suggested that H. obtusifolium can be used as a key source of antioxidants/ antimicrobial agents in food and pharmaceutical industries.

Effects of M. oleifera leaves and pods extracts on physicochemical properties, free radical scavenging properties, antimicrobial activities and sensory attributes of pork meatballs were evaluated during cold storage at 4°C for 15 days. The preparation of pork meatballs was divided into eight treatments as control, 0.02% butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), 0.2% leaves and pods aqueous extract, 0.4% leaves and pods aqueous extract, 0.8% leaves and pods aqueous extract. Aqueous leaves extract showed highest level of total phenolic (67.18 mg GAE/g extract) and flavonoid contents (5.60 mg CE/g extract) compared to those observed in aqueous pods extract as 55.17 mg GAE/g extract and 3.54 mg CE/g extract, respectively. The leaves extract had strongest antioxidant activity against DPPH radicals with IC50 49.85 μg/ml while the pods extract exhibited IC50 99.31 μg/ml. According to pork meatballs analysis, meatballs samples with addition of aqueous leaves extract exerted higher antioxidant activities in a concentration-dependent manner that were performed by higher DPPH scavenging activity and lower TBARs values in comparison with aqueous pods extract. Conversely, M.oleifera pods extract showed highest antibacterial activity against all testedfoodborne bacterial strains including Staphylococcus aureus (TISTR 1466),Bacillus cereus (TISTR 678), Escherichia coli (TISTR 780), Salmonellatyphimurium (ATCC 13311) with lowest MIC (1.56 mg/ml) and MBC (3.13 mg/ml)in agreement with the decrease of total microbial counts as compared to controland BHT samples. The meatballs with pods extract possessed higher sensoryattributes scores than those added with the leaves extract. In conclusion, 0.8%pods extracts effectively retarded lipid oxidation as well as decreased microbialgrowth in pork meatballs during cold storage. However, it was point out thatinferior sensory scores were affected by increasing additional the extract in themeatballs. Therefore, the use of Moringa extracts should be carefully applied inthe meatballs for avoidance of lowering consumer acceptance.

Antioxidant activity of the ethanolic extract and fractions from the stem bark of T. catigua was investigated. IC50 (for DPPH scavenging) by T. catigua varied from 9.17 ± 0.63 to 76.42 ± 5.87 mg mL-1 and total phenolic content varied from 345.63 ± 41.08 to 601.27 ± 42.59 mg GAE g-1 of dry extract. Fe2+-induced lipid peroxidation was significantly reduced by the ethanolic extract and fractions. Mitochondrial Ca2+-induced dichlorofluorescein oxidation was significantly reduced by the ethanolic extract in a concentration-dependent manner. Ethanolic extract reduced mitochondrial Dym only at high concentrations (40-100 mg mL-1), which indicates that its toxicity does not overlap with its antioxidant effects. Results suggest involvement of antioxidant activities of T. catigua in its pharmacological properties.

Rhodomyrtus tomentosa(Myrtaceae) has been employed in traditional Thai medicine to treat colic diarrhoea, dysentery, abscesses, haemorrhage, and gynaecopathy. In addition, it has been used to formulate skin-whitening, anti-aging and skin beautifying agents. Ethnomedical activities of this plant may be due its antioxidant property. Hence, the aim of this study was to evaluate bothin vitroandin vivoantioxidant activities ofR. tomentosaleaf extract.In vitroantioxidant activity of the extract was assessed by lipid peroxidation inhibition capacity, ferric reducing antioxidant power, and metal chelating activity.R. tomentosaextract demonstrated its free radical scavenging effects in concentration dependent manner.In vivoantioxidant activity of the extract was conducted in SwissAlbinomice. Levels of thio-barbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), glutathione (GSH), and the activities of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in blood, liver, and kidney were analyzed using microtitre plate photometer. Administration of CCl4caused significant increase in TBARS and decrease in GSH, SOD, CAT and GPx levels. In contrast,R. tomentosaextract (0.8 g/kg) effectively prevented these alterations and maintained the antioxidant status. The results suggest thatR. tomentosaextract can serve as a potent antioxidant.

Xiao-Yan-Hua-Jie-San (XYHJS), a traditional Chinese prescription, is used as a medication recipe to clinically treat inflammation and hepatitis. In previous study, we reported the hepatoprotective effects of XYHJS by increasing an antioxidant enzyme activity in mice. In the present study, the main bioactive components of XYHJS and their antioxidant activity were further investigated by using different model systems in vitro. The total phenolics content in the extract of XYHJS was determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu method. Analysis of the major phenolic compounds in the extract of XYHYS was carried out by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and thin layer chromatographic (TLC) method. The total phenolic content of the extract was 2.84 ± 0.06 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g extract powder. The phenolic acid in XYHJS was found to be gallic acid (GA). The content of GA was 2.80 mg/ml by HPLC (n=5, RSD=1.26%). Furthermore, the antioxidant activity of XYHJS extract was determined by 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) scavenging activity and hydroxyl free radicals (·OH) scavenging activity assay. The radical scavenging activity of XYHJS increased significantly in a concentration-dependent manner. At a concentration of 2.5 mg/ml, the DPPH and ·OH scavenging activity was 89.94% and 91.53%, respectively. It can be concluded that the content of GA in XYHJS is very high and it is the main contributor to the antioxidant activity of XYHJS. Our study indicates that XYHJS prescription could be considered to be an effective agent in the prevention of various liver diseases associated with oxidative stress.

Piper sarmentosum and Piper nigrum which belongs to family Piperaceae are well distributed in the tropical region including Malaysia. They are one of the medicinal plants which are well known for its health benefits to human. This study focused on determining the antioxidant activity of P. sarmentosum and P. nigrum leaves of ethanolic and aqueous extraction. For the extraction, different concentrations of ethanol and aqueous extracts were used. For the antioxidant activity, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay was conducted. The results showed that the scavenging activity of all extracts samples was in a concentration-dependent manner. High antioxidant activity of P. sarmentosum leaves was obtained by using ethanol extraction with 74% of inhibition, and IC50 value was 35.18 μg/mL. Meanwhile, P. nigrum leaves showed high antioxidant activity by using aqueous extraction with 64.68% of inhibition, and IC50 value was 79.89 μg/mL. It can be concluded that different extraction solvents used to give a different level of antioxidant activity of both P. sarmentosum and P. nigrum.

Background: One of the four most incident species in mangrove is the Laguncularia racemosa, plant widely used in popular medicine against inflammation and fever. Objective: Here, L. racemosa was investigated in relation to their phytochemical profile, antioxidant activity, citotoxicity, antimicrobial and immunostimulatory effect. Method: Aqueous extract was obtained from leaves of plant, its phytochemical profile was investigated through UPLC method, the antioxidant assays performed were TAA, DPPH, ABTS, nitrite and lipid peroxidation assay. Antimicrobial assays were made using standard strains. For all biological tests were used mice splenocytes and from these cell cultures were measured cytotoxicity, proliferation index and cytokines production. Results: Laguncularia racemosa leaves showed the presence of ions, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and high concentration of phenolic compounds. Antioxidant activities were promoted by aqueous extract, especially in DPPH and NO assays. Extract in 6 µg/mL did not induce significant cell death, stimulated the cell proliferation and the IL-4 production. Moreover, decreases of proinflammatory cytokines IFN-γ, TNF-α and IL-6 were found. Conclusion: The presence of essential nutrients, significant antioxidant activity and immune stimulation confirm the use of this plant in folk medicine against inflammation.
