A study was carried out on the size distribution, length-weight relationship and condition factor of a deep-water population of the commercially important tropical sea cucumber Holothuria scabra in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Samples were collected from fishers and supplementary information gathered. The deep water (15-20 m) population of H. scabra is dominated by large sized individuals that have already attained maturity. There was no significant difference in size between male and female individuals (p>0.05). The sex ratio in this population significantly differed from 1:1 in favour of male individuals (p=0.01). The results showed significant correlation between length and weight for male, female, indeterminate individuals, and pooled data, with r values of 0.681, 0.794, 0.821 and 0.680, respectively. Moreover, the b-value for male, female, indeterminate individuals and pooled data was 1.288, 1.439, 1.686 and 1.407 respectively, which revealed that individuals of deep-water H. scabra exhibit negative allometric growth. The mean condition factor (K) value when all data were pooled together was 4.213±0.106 indicating that individuals were in good condition and came from a healthy environment. This study fills a key information gap that is relevant to the management of the H. scabra fishery in the country.

Abstract The objectives of this study were to investigate the length-weight relationship and condition factor of crayfish living in the natural habitat of South Sorong and Jayawijaya Regencies, Papua, Indonesia. Three species of crayfish (Cherax monticola, C. albertisii and C. communis) were collected from Jayawijaya Regency and only one species of crayfish (C. swonden) was collected from South Sorong Regency. The growth coefficient (b) for each crayfish species ranged from 2.55 to 3.10. C. monticola from Jayawijaya Regency presented the highest b value (3.10), and C. swonden from South Sorong Regency showed the lowest b value (2.55). The condition factors (K) for each crayfish species ranged from 1.9 to 2.3. C. monticola and C. albertissi had the highest K value (2.3), whereas C. swonden demonstrated the lowest K value (1.9). The present study indicated that the values of b and K of crayfish living in Jayawijaya were higher than those from South Sorong probably because Jayawijaya habitat provides more suitable environment and better food supply for crayfish than South Sorong.

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between the length-weight and the condition factor of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L.,1758) fed with three types of feed with different levels of crude protein (A: 38% Crude Protein (CP) and 18% Crude Lipid (CL); B: 42% CP and 18% CL; and C: 45% CP and 18% CL). The length-weight relationship of the fish in groups A, B and C was determined as W=0.051*TL2.63, W=0.046*TL2.67 and W=0.046*TL 2.68 respectively and there was no statistically significant difference between the groups (p>0.05). There was negative allometric growth in all experimental groups. The lowest mean value in the groups according to Fulton’s condition factor (CF) was found in group B (1.66±0.17), and the highest mean value was found in group C (1.71±0.18). It was determined that there was no statistically significant difference between the groups (p>0.05).

The Asian catfish Mystus bleekeri is a popular food fish along with favored as an ornamental fish in Bangladesh. Till now detailed report on stomach contents, trophic level, length-weight relationship and condition factor of this fish species in the agro-climatic context of Bangladesh is lacking. Hence, the aims of this study were to describe the stomach content, trophic level, length-weight relationship (LWR) and condition factors of Mystus bleekeri collected from Dekhar Haor, Sylhet, Bangladesh from July 2017 to June 2018. A total of 600 specimens ranging from 6.9-24.6 cm total length (TL) and 5.7-72.4 g body weight (BW) was analyzed in this study. Stomach content analysis showed that the fish fed mostly on Mollusca with a frequency of occurrence (fo: 25.36%) and worms (fo: 21.68%), followed by plant matters (fo: 3.32%), Cladocerana (fo: 1.18%), Copepoda (fo: 0.95%), and Teleostei (fo: 0.36%). The estimated mean trophic level (TROPH) ranged from 2.35±0.13 in December to 3.02±0.23 in August, indicating that they are opportunistic feeder. The LWR analysis showed negative allometric growth (b<3) throughout the year. The values of the exponent b in the LWR (W=aLb) vary between 1.474 and 2.490.The mean K value was significantly higher in October indicating the heavier weight and better condition of the fish (P<0.05). The data obtained from this study would be useful to introduce sustainable management of Mystus bleekeri not only in Dekhar Haor but also in other inland waters of Bangladesh.

The Peppered loach, Lepidocephalichthys guntea is the least concerned freshwater species, commonly found in India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. In West Bengal, it is popularly known as “Guntey” & it has commercial and food value. The current study aimed to the estimation of the length-weight relationship, condition, and relative condition factor (Kn) of the fish species Lepidocephalichthys guntea, habitats of Kangsabati river in the District West Midnapore, West Bengal, India. Total 161 numbers of species were collected between August 2019 to July 2020 and considered for examination. The fishes ranged from 5.4 to 10.7 cm in total length & 0.72 to 9.73 g in weight. The scatter diagram exhibits a linear relationship between the log length & log weight. The female species has a higher “b” value (b=3.452, P<0.05), which is greater than 3 which justifying a positive allometric growth. The parabolic equation among total length and weight of L. guntea is labeled as W= 0.008744991 L 2.7496 for males, W= 0.002153098 L 3.452 for females & W= 0.007575793 L 2.8155 for the combination of male and female species. Higher r2 (0.859, P<0.05) value in combined of male & female justifying a strong relationship between length and length. The mean condition(K) & relative condition factor (Kn) values were found to be the height in the male category with "K" value 0.654 & "Kn” value1.174 respectively indicating the well-being of the species. Although, this species does not sternly follow the cube law & shows a well status of health condition in their natural habitat.

Diet analysis revealed that Apocryptes bato is a carnivorous fish. It depends on shrimps and non-shrimp crustaceans mainly. Shrimps include Acetes, penaeid and metapenaeid juveniles, whereas non-shrimp crustaceans include copepods, crab larvae, mysids and amphipods predominantly. The total body lengths (TL) varied between 11.20 and 22.20 cm and weight 16.70 to 43.50 g in male fish. The form of the equation for TL and weight relationship was W = 0.44TL2.57 and for standard length (SL) it was W = 1.009SL2.66. Condition factor (K) ranged from 0.87 to 1.23. The TL was 15.00 to 26.00 cm and weight as 25.1 to 38.50 g in female. The equation was W = 1.001TL2.52 for TL and W = 1.003SL2.63 for SL and K value ranged from 0.95 to 1.106. Length-weight relationship and condition factor are essential parameters used in determination of growth and well-being of fish. The length-weight relationship and condition factor of eight species of cichlids were examined from a total of 358 cichlids belonging to fourteen species and seven genera. Sampling was between January and June, 2020 in Eniong River and lower Cross River in the Niger Delta from three stations: station one in Eniong river, station two at the confluence of Eniong and lower Cross River, and station three at the lower Cross River. The length and weight of each fish was measured to the nearest millimeter and gram, respectively. The length-weight relationship (LWR) and condition factor (K) of the species Coptodon dageti, Coptodon guineensis, Coptodon zilli, Chromidotilapia guntheri, Hemichromis elongatus, Oreochromis niloticus, Pelmatolapia mariae and Sarotherodon melanotheron were determined using standard methods. Total length of fish ranged from 12.9 ± 5.01 in H. elongatus to 20.7 ± 3.37cm in C. zilli. Total weight ranged from 24.8 ± 13.80 in H. elongatus to 146.4 ± 68.0 g in C. zilli. The exponent b ranged from 1.54 for H. elongatus to 3.34 in Pelmatolapia mariae. The coefficients of determination (r2) varied between H. elongatus (0.74) and O. niloticus (0.96). Fulton’s condition factor (K) ranged from 1.2 6 ± 0.50 (H. elongatus) to 1.89 ± 0.43 (O. niloticus). Length-weight relationship revealed negative allometry for six species and positive allometry for two species (O. niloticus and P. mariae). Cichlids in this study were observed to be in good condition, as the K values were greater than one.

Coptodon zilli and Micropterus salmoides were introduced into Lake Naivasha in 1929 and 1959 respectively. The reasons for the introduction were to boost the fisheries and for recreational fishing respectively. However, the numbers of the two fish species in the lake have been declining over the years. It is therefore necessary to assess various aspects of their growth such as length-weight relationship, condition factor, sex ratio and length at first maturity to inform management and policy making for enhanced recovery and establishment of their populations. Length-weight relationship, condition factor, sex ratio and length at first maturity of the fish were studied from October 2016 to November 2018. A total of 303 fish samples; 193 C. zilli and 110 M. salmoides were studied. Results showed that C. zilli and M. salmoides had an allometry coefficient value of 2.9 and 3.1 and condition factor (K) value of 1.77 and 1.39 respectively. The sex ratios (male: female) of C. zilli and M. salmoides were 1.1:1 and 1.3: 1 respectively. The shortest total length for mature C. zilli and M. salmoides recorded were 12 cm and 26.5 cm while 21.8 cm and 51 cm were for the longest respectively. The fish growth pattern therefore failed to obey the cube law of b=3 thus exhibiting allometric growth. The two fish species were found to be in good condition with K factor above 1. It can therefore be concluded that the fish are generally in a good condition though the early maturity especially for C. zilli could be a sign of pressure either from environmental factors or human induced. Domination of the species by males, although a common feature in African lakes, is a case for concern since it presents uncertainty on the future of the fisheries. Restocking of Lake Naivasha with the two fish species should be considered and proper fishing practices enforced

Length-weight relationship (LWR), condition factor (K) and feeding habits of Coilia dussumieri, Nemapteryx nenga and Nibea soldado from Santubong Estuary, Sarawak, Malaysia were reported in the present study. The sampling was conducted during the non-monsoon season and monsoon season from April to November 2017 at Buntal, Penambir and Demak rivers using three-layered gillnets. A total of 182 fish samples were caught and measured for the total length and body weight. Then, the data were analysed by the equations for LWR and K. The feeding behaviour analysis was carried out using Relative Gut Index (RGI) and Frequency of Food Occurrence method. The log-transformed regression showed that most of the fishes exhibited negative allometric. K showed a significant difference between seasons. The RGI values of the fishes showed that they were carnivorous. The highest frequency of food occurrence in both seasons was gastropods (94-95 %) and the food items were found to be more variable during monsoon season (gastropods insect, worms, fish, asteroidea, phytoplankton and bivalve). The b value is an exponent to measure the growth pattern of fish and in this study, the b values were in the expected range of 2.5-3.5 and not affected by seasonal variation. The K values suggesting that most of the species were surviving well in the river and was influenced by seasonal change. The RGI and frequency of food occurrence showed that all fish in this study species were carnivorous with more variability in food was observed during the monsoon season. The data of this study are important for a sustainable fisheries management in this area.

The length-weight relationships (LWRs) of Otolithoides pama (Hamilton, 1822) from the Hooghly-Matlah estuarine system of West Bengal were estimated. The study is based on 618 samples (298 male and 320 female) collected at monthly intervals for a period of 18 months (November 2016 to April 2018) from artisanal catch. No significant difference (p>0.01) was observed in growth rate for both the sexes. The ‘b’ values were estimated at 2.88, 2.84 and 2.86 with ‘r2‘values as 0.96, 0.95 and 0.95 for male, female and pooled samples respectively. The growth pattern was found to be negatively allometric. The month-wise mean ‘K’ value ranged from 0.70±0.07 to 0.78±0.07 for male and 0.71±0.05 to 0.89±0.11 for female. The length-wise estimated mean ‘Kn’ value varied from 0.92 to 1.17 for male and 0.76 to 1.29 for female indicating the moderately good condition of the fish in the study area. The results can be used for sustainable management and conservation of this commercially important species in this estuary
