The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between the length-weight and the condition factor of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L.,1758) fed with three types of feed with different levels of crude protein (A: 38% Crude Protein (CP) and 18% Crude Lipid (CL); B: 42% CP and 18% CL; and C: 45% CP and 18% CL). The length-weight relationship of the fish in groups A, B and C was determined as W=0.051*TL2.63, W=0.046*TL2.67 and W=0.046*TL 2.68 respectively and there was no statistically significant difference between the groups (p>0.05). There was negative allometric growth in all experimental groups. The lowest mean value in the groups according to Fulton’s condition factor (CF) was found in group B (1.66±0.17), and the highest mean value was found in group C (1.71±0.18). It was determined that there was no statistically significant difference between the groups (p>0.05).

A study was carried out on the size distribution, length-weight relationship and condition factor of a deep-water population of the commercially important tropical sea cucumber Holothuria scabra in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Samples were collected from fishers and supplementary information gathered. The deep water (15-20 m) population of H. scabra is dominated by large sized individuals that have already attained maturity. There was no significant difference in size between male and female individuals (p>0.05). The sex ratio in this population significantly differed from 1:1 in favour of male individuals (p=0.01). The results showed significant correlation between length and weight for male, female, indeterminate individuals, and pooled data, with r values of 0.681, 0.794, 0.821 and 0.680, respectively. Moreover, the b-value for male, female, indeterminate individuals and pooled data was 1.288, 1.439, 1.686 and 1.407 respectively, which revealed that individuals of deep-water H. scabra exhibit negative allometric growth. The mean condition factor (K) value when all data were pooled together was 4.213±0.106 indicating that individuals were in good condition and came from a healthy environment. This study fills a key information gap that is relevant to the management of the H. scabra fishery in the country.

Background: Gerrids under family Gerridae are important in contributing rich source of protein. Gerres species are economically important food in India. They take a good role in development and economic of Indian estuaries. In fish biology, knowledge of the length-weight data and condition factor (Kn) is an important tool. Gerres filamentosus is one of the economically important groups of fishes inhabiting Karnataka coast. It was selected as a candidate for the present study since the knowledge on length-weight data and condition factor will be helpful in mass culture and production of this species in Karnataka. Methods: The length-weight relationships and condition factor of 2020 specimens of fish, G. filamentosus from Mangalore, Karnataka, south west coast of India, were studied from July 2009 to June 2011. The length-weight relationship was found using parabolic equation. Analysis of co-variance was used to test the significant difference in estimates of “b” between sexes. The condition factor for individual fish was calculated using the formula Kn = Wo/Wc.Result: The relation between the total length (L) and total weight (TW) was described as LogTW = -1.7716 + 2.9511 Log L for females, Log TW = -1.7526 + 2.9364 LogL for males and LogTW = -1.8343 + 2.9720 LogL for indeterminate fishes. The highest and lowest condition factor (Kn) values in females was in December 2010 (1.1186) and September 2010 (0.8871), respectively. Similarly, the highest and lowest Kn values in male was in March 2011 (1.0630) and September 2010 (0.6977), respectively. The result of length-weight relationships could be used for fishery to approve appropriate regulations for sustainable fishery management. The present findings could also be useful for ecosystem modeling. In the present study, changes in Kn value may be in relation to some other reasons than reproductive cycle and feeding intensity.

Macrobrachium assamense peninsularie length-weight relationship and Fulton’s condition factor was studied in Khoh tributary of Ram Ganga in the Garhwal Himalaya region of Uttarakhand for the period of one year from March 2009-Feb 2010. A strong positive relationship was observed between the length and weight in both the sexes (male and female) (b<3). Also when data was pooled, the growth was allometric (b<3). The values obtained from the length/weight relationship (LWR) showed that there was a high and significant correlation between the total length and weight after using the t-test for the significance of correlation. The highest correlation coefficient ‘r’ =0.94 i.e strong association between length and weight was observed. This means that as the length of the prawn increases the weight increases in the same proportion. Coefficient of determination r2 was also high (0.88) which indicated that the model used for the analysis fits the data, confirming the fitness of the model. The Fulton’s condition factor “K” was recorded highest (K = 2.0603) in March and lowest (K = 1.6195) in May in Male while in female, the condition factor (K = 2.1038) was highest in August and lowest (K = 1.5345) in October. The condition factor “K” ranges from 1.6195 to 2.0603 in male and 1.5345 to 2.1038 in female. It means the condition factor was sex and season dependent. The difference in condition factors in male and female may be attributed to the presence of ovigerous female, environmental conditions and changes in feeding intensity.

The effects of an N-terminal peptide (amino acids 1–38) of Fuguparathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP 1–38) on calcium regulation of larval sea bream were investigated in seawater (36‰) and after transfer to dilute seawater (12‰). Exposure to PTHrP 1–38 evoked a 1.5-fold increase in calcium influx in both full-strength and dilute seawater. Calcium influx in dilute seawater-adapted larvae was roughly one-half that observed in full-strength seawater controls. PTHrP 1–38 also reduced drinking of fish in seawater but, at all concentrations tested, was without effect in dilute seawater. The amount of water imbibed was 55% lower in dilute seawater than in seawater. PTHrP 1–38 exposure affected the calcium influx route: the main contribution of calcium uptake shifted from intestinal absorption to extraintestinal uptake, probably by the induction of a dose-dependent increase in branchial (active) transport. Moreover, seawater-adapted fish exposed to 1 nM and 10 mM PTHrP 1–38 experienced a 2.5-fold reduction in overall calcium efflux. Overall, the calciotropic action of PTHrP 1–38 resulted in a dose-dependent increase in net calcium balance.

The present investigation was carried out for establishing the length weight relationship and to enumerate the relative condition factor and the sex ratio of Neolissochilus hexagonolepis from Tamor River, Nepal. Altogether 198 fishes were investigated from December 2014 till the end of November 2016. The sex ratio of the fish was found to be in the ratio of 1:1.2 with female dominating the catch for most parts of the year. Analysis of t-test showed a highly significant relationship (p˂0.05) between length and weight for male, female and sexes pooled. The fish was found to show isometric growth pattern with exponential value (b) equal to 2.962 for sexes pooled. The mean value of Fulton's condition factor (K) for sexes pooled was found to be 1.29 ± 0.49 giving the indication that the general well being of the fish was good. Sudden increase in the value of relative condition factor (Kn) in the size group 30-33 cm in male and 42-45 cm in female indicated their length range during which they showed the sign of maturation for the first time. Steep fall in the value of 'Kn' in size groups 33-36 cm onwards in male and 45-48 cm in female indicated their length range at spent phase.

Thai pangas, Pangasius hypophthalmus fingerlings were reared for 60 days in laboratory condition to investigate the effects of feeding frequency on the growth performance. The fish fingerlings in three treatments were fed with two, three and four times a day, respectively. During the feeding trial, growth and feed utilization were assessed by condition factor (K), average daily gain (ADG), specific growth rate (SGR) and feed conversion ratio (FCR). Significantly lower FCR 1.81 ± 0.02 and higher ADG 0.38 ± 0.02 and SGR 2.20 ± 0.02% were found in fish fed thrice a day than that of other treatments (p < 0.05). Highest condition factor 1.69 ± 0.13 was found in fish fed four times a day while the lowest condition factor 0.77 ± 0.03 was detected in fish fed twice a day. Moisture content of Thai pangas in treatment T1, T2 and T3 were 79.23 ± 0.77, 78.08 ± 0.85 and 77.84 ± 0.17%, respectively. The crude protein, crude lipid and ash contents were 16.11 ± 0.00 to 16.38 ± 0.08%, 3.22 ± 0.27 to 3.41 ± 0.06% and 1.47 ± 0.02 to 1.82 ± 0.04%, respectively. The findings of the present study demonstrated that three times feeding frequency showed better growth performance and nutritional composition of Thai pangas fingerlings. Dhaka Univ. J. Biol. The in vitro hydrolysis of different starches (potato, rice, wheat, corn, sorghum), as well as an intermediate product of malting process (brewer's spent grain), by blue tilapia, Oreochromis aureus, gilthead sea bream, Sparus aurata and European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, were compared (total carbohydrase assay, 37° C, pH 7.6,4 hours incubation). Obtained results (significandy higher hydrolysis levels obtained for potato, rice and sorghum starch) suggest that starch source and associated properties (starch granule size, amylose content) and modifications applied may have significant difference on its digestion by fish digestive carbohydrases. Furthermore, the importance of brewer's spent grain as a low-cost carbohydrate source and feed component, in relation to aglucosidase adaptive response to dietary carbohydrate, is also considered significant.
