Agra was the capital of the Mughal Empire at its zenith, and the splendour of the city during this period can only be imagined. There is an abundance of royal buildings which are protected by the Government of India. There were other significant buildings too, housing the high nobility, away from both the royal quarters as well as the ordinary peoples’ houses. These have largely vanished, being large enough to attract builders as well as developers. The article describes and establishes the significance of one such rare traditional townhouse or mansion called ‘haveli’ located on the river Yamuna, Agra, in relation to a larger historical and cultural landscape. It also discusses the possibilities of conservation and management for protecting and enhancing the significance of the premises and planning for its sustainable development in future. The current edifice appears to be a coalescence of British and Mughal architecture with some local features. The building stands where similar-sized havelis stood during the Mughal period, housing high nobility. The architects of these buildings efficiently used the features of the river. With most such havelis having disappeared from the riverfront, this large residence-like edifice provides an interesting glimpse of the lost heritage. Fragments of information obtained from old maps and paintings, site surveys and some few research works have been joined together to reconstruct the origin and transformation vis-a-vis the present condition.

Traditional handicrafts are rooted in the idea of the place, and their revival can trigger a construction of place in terms of physical buildings and cultural ambience. This study focuses on traditional Suzhou embroidery and analyses the effect of its revival on the construction of placeness and sustainable development within its specific social context. The results showed that (1) reviving traditional handicrafts triggers changes to local public spaces, the reshaping of local architecture, and the development of a cultural landscape; (2) The revival of the handicraft in terms of local activities is reflected in increased efficiency and creativity and in the stable inheritance of skills. The traditional farming lifestyle of Zhenhu has been transformed, leading to better quality of life and social networks; (3) The revival of Suzhou embroidery has updated the place through renovating its image. The local residents’ awareness of the benefits of their handicrafts has also increased, and their increased dependence on place will strengthen their belongingness and attachment to it. These local changes exert positive impact on the realization of sustainable goals by boosting decent work and economic growth, ensuring environmental sustainability, building sustainable cities and communities, and enhancing community stability and cultural diversity. Thus, the revival of handicrafts can guide a place to refocus on local economic growth and cultural development towards sustainable development, bringing about an organic inheritance of its history and the reinforcement of placeness.

Combining the design of practical cases, the article proposes the use of low-tech, low-interference vernacular technology, and the integration of artistic intervention methods can more effectively restore landscape characteristics and stimulate rural development vitality.

De esta manera, se interpreta que el paisaje cultural trasmite y refleja el modelo de desarrollo instaurado en un determinado territorio, y su efecto sobre el patrimonio.PALABRAS CLAVEterritorio, valoración del paisaje cultural, gestión del patrimonio, parque patrimonialABSTRACTThis article aims to be a reflective text, and to express, from an analytical, critical and practical approach to the notion of territory and cultural landscape, how said duality shapes the conception of heritage in a holistic way. Its goal is to show the decisiveness and inescapability the patrimonial component has for the purpose of the planning of territory, urban planning and sustainable development. The correlation and implication between theory and practice, and the comprehensiveness of the patrimonial component, are found through the examination of theoretical definitions, international agreements, management proposals and examples of practical cases in Peru. The reflection is set off by Ramón Folch’s statement, that "the landscape is the aspect of the territory and summarizes the history of the anthropic process that it has been able to develop". In such a way, the article interprets that the cultural landscape transmits and reflects the model of development established in a given territory, and its effect on heritage.KEYWORDSterritory, cultural landscape assessment, heritage management
