In the media convergence era, brands are embracing hybrid forms of advertising communication such as branded content, product placement and sponsored TV ‘pods’, brand blogs, shareable video, programmatic advertising, ‘native’ advertising and more, as alternatives to, and extensions of, traditional mass media advertising campaigns. In this article, we draw on Genette’s theory of transtextuality to reframe this phenomenon from a paratextual purview. We suggest that the analogy of the paratext articulates the iterative, ambiguous, participative and intertextual character of much contemporary brand communication. We describe extended examples of paratextual advertising and promotion that illustrate the fluid and mutually contingent relation of advertising text to paratext, and we outline an analytical framework for future research and practice.

This article discusses the urgency of media literacy in addressing the framing of cynicism and conflict issues between tribes, religions, races and groups carried out by the mass media in Indonesia. Specifically, this study at­tempts to contribute the role of media literacy in minimizing cynicism between tribes, religions, races and groups. Through text studies, this article argues that literacy is considered as science. The more educated people, the more acquired knowledge will be. It means that when people re­ceive more information from the mass media, they will cer­tain­ly be wiser. Further, to raise public awareness, a systema­tic way through education, both formal and non-formal, is needed. Hence, harmonious human relations could be rea­li­zed, regardless of ethnic status, race, and religious belief.

The development of information and communication technology is currently endemic to almost every line of people's lives. One of the effects of technological progress is a massive change in the management of mass media companies. The mass media company must be able to increase its capacity in accordance with the technological advances, one of which is by utilizing the presence of other media that have different platforms in a media company management. The use of many media platforms is done by integrating a manual management system into various management systems based on modern technology. Integrating manual systems into various modern systems, in mass media companies is referred to as the process of media convergence. Tempo Media is a large print media company that has also integrated its management system into various types of media platforms. What is journalism? How does it exist and why? How does journalism define itself and in what ways can we make use of looking theoretically at the practice of it? These were the central themes of our workshop; Theoretical Models as Mass Media Practice held at the ‘Minding the Gap’ conference at Reuters Institute in May 2007, from which this collection of papers has been selected. As with the other workshops during the conference, the majority of our panellists were themselves once media practitioners. It is my opinion that this background and inside knowledge of the field in itself can provide an exceptional framework for understanding the workings of mass media while helping the press reflect over these workings too. In a time of change for the journalistic profession, when media convergence is growing; the media is marked by deregulation and fewer journalists are being asked to do more, there is an increased need for the profession to get involved in debating the core values of its existence.

Media Literacy is recognized as an essential area to promote critical view for citizens, to promote a democratic society in which citizens are able to consume critically the mass media but also to express themselves by this media as producers. An educational program was designed to support teachers’ empowerment in using different media into the classroom in The Republic of Mozambique. To collect data, a pre and post questionnaire were applied, interviews and the videos produced during the course. According to the results showed, the decentralization of pedagogical tools production was really important achievement from this educational program. Key words: media literacy, ICT, teacher education.

Mass media and society, a popular concept in media studies, has constituted much discourse due to roles media play in society and perceived effects that can result thereof. This chapter is inspired by the term ‘medicalization of the society' whereby ailments are regarded as medical issues and subjected to medical diagnosis and treatment, regardless of their true causes. Similarly, the violence, moral decadence and ethno-religious crises witnessed in the society are largely ascribed to the media. This chapter examined the said effects of mass media with society's social systems, cultures and values, with a view to finding a relationship. It argues that these societal makeups especially ones as formidable as Africa's also affect largely members' conducts and reactions to media contents. However, it advocates children's news segment, adherence to media ethics, and use of media programmes to enhance learning, proper socialization, abolishment of negative cultures, media literacy among others.

The aim of this paper is to look on level of media literacy and activities in this field in two countries – Latvia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. People are exposed to a flow of diverse content of information and opinions, there it is important to discuss about media education and it`s outcome – the media literacy. Media literacy helps people to analyze, evaluate, and create messages thus develops people's critical and creative abilities. The survey about credibility of mass media, critical use of information, understanding of media literacy in each country, institutions promoting media literacy and the impact of media literacy on political decision making was carried out. The main hypothesis of this case study was that media literacy is basic presumption of the establishing the critical thinking of society of developed democratic consciousness.The comparative analysis showed that sociological aspect in the area of Bosnia and Herzegovina within the deep division in the society itself, with the lack of consensual awareness creates presumption trust completely into the mass media, while in the case of Latvia there is just few answers related to the existing media literacy.
