What is journalism? How does it exist and why? How does journalism define itself and in what ways can we make use of looking theoretically at the practice of it? These were the central themes of our workshop; Theoretical Models as Mass Media Practice held at the ‘Minding the Gap’ conference at Reuters Institute in May 2007, from which this collection of papers has been selected. As with the other workshops during the conference, the majority of our panellists were themselves once media practitioners. It is my opinion that this background and inside knowledge of the field in itself can provide an exceptional framework for understanding the workings of mass media while helping the press reflect over these workings too. In a time of change for the journalistic profession, when media convergence is growing; the media is marked by deregulation and fewer journalists are being asked to do more, there is an increased need for the profession to get involved in debating the core values of its existence.

The news media figures prominently in most appraisals of democracy today. This is because it is the main channel of communication between elected representatives and citizens; and the (self-appointed) watchdog of the powerful. While news organisations are sometimes reluctant to accept the responsibility that comes with such power, it is implicit in the core principles of journalistic philosophy, whereby attempts to constrain or censor the news media are seen as threats to democracy itself. However, these normative roles also are surrounded by many tensions that surround the ability of our news media to perform their democratic functions. This chapter discusses four of these tensions: (i) diversity versus commonality; (ii) the information necessary for citizens to participate effectively in democratic life, versus the entertainment-driven focus of an increasingly commercial-oriented media; (iii) the need of the media to treat people as citizens on the one hand and as consumer publics on the other; and (iv) broadcasters' relationship with the press.

Discourse is a series of sentences that relate and connect one proposition with the other propositions to from a unity. The main function of the news is not to warn, instruct, and make the public stunned, the main function of the news is to inform and then it is upto the public to utilize the news. There are two ways for the news to be useful to the public, the first to effort news as general knowledge and the second to effort the news a tool of social control. E-Ktp corruption cases are one of the biggest corruption cases that occurered in Indonesia. Therefore, many mass media reported heavilly on E-Ktp corruption cases, one of which was the kompas.com. furthermore, to find out how the writer gets the source the writer gets the source of data and information the writer uses the criminology visual method and then analyzes it using criminology newsmaking theory. However, the results of this study illustrate that the aspect highlighted are those of actors suspected of being involved in E-Ktp corruption cases. Where the media only emphasizes one institution, namely the people’s representative council, even though in this case the involved parties are not only the legislature but case the involved parties are not only the legislature but also from various institutions such as the interior ministry, state-owned enterprises, and private entrepreneurs. In the aspect of media projection Kompas.com make the bulk of the news about E- Ktp corruption cases as news headline and a tranding topic.

In the media convergence era, brands are embracing hybrid forms of advertising communication such as branded content, product placement and sponsored TV ‘pods’, brand blogs, shareable video, programmatic advertising, ‘native’ advertising and more, as alternatives to, and extensions of, traditional mass media advertising campaigns. In this article, we draw on Genette’s theory of transtextuality to reframe this phenomenon from a paratextual purview. We suggest that the analogy of the paratext articulates the iterative, ambiguous, participative and intertextual character of much contemporary brand communication. We describe extended examples of paratextual advertising and promotion that illustrate the fluid and mutually contingent relation of advertising text to paratext, and we outline an analytical framework for future research and practice.

It is impossible to understand the media-scape of Japan from the 1920s through 1945 without analyzing the implications of representations of the emperor as well as the effects of state-led- and voluntary self-censorship on their production and reception. The emperor’s portrait photograph (goshin’ei) was too sacred to gaze upon, and citizens and soldiers even died to protect it. It was preserved with extreme care in public institutions and battleships. On the other hand, paradoxically, Hirohito was the first emperor whose public appearances were covered by multiple mass media, ranging from personalized collectible postcards to newsreels, which were readily available for viewers’ scrutiny. These contradictory viewing practices, one prohibited and another accessible, disrupted the visual culture of emperor-centered disciplined and nationalized imperial citizenship. (122 words)

Abstract :The mass media had great influence in conveying a message against their common. The values of the message was set out in the text and images are presented by the media. The message may contain meaning positive and inspiring in describing events, so that is not interfere psychological of audience.  In the context of photojournalism, the expression that the power of the image can be far beyond the message conveyed through text. Because the meaning of the message, the essence of photojournalism must pay attention to the rules of journalism were set in the Press Law and the Code of Ethics of Journalism. An understanding of the ethics of photojournalism is not only for internal media, but also to a audience. Since the Aum Shinrikyôô affair of 1995, the Japanese authorities have been quick to demonstrate that they are firmly in control in situations involving religious groups that espouse millennial ideas, or other groups rumored to be acting against social norms. In April 2003 the Japanese mass media began reporting intensely on a virtually unknown new religious movement named Pana Wave. A massive police investigation was launched immediately on the premise that the group appeared to resemble Aum Shinrikyôô in its early days. Although the press coverage and police involvement again raised the public's fears over dangerous religious groups, the media dropped the story quickly after the investigation yielded little more than vehicle violations. The Pana Wave affair represents a post-Aum Shinrikyôô moral panic in which the reaction to the perceived threat far outweighed the reality of the situation.

This article is describing the main genre forms used in the local periodicals in the 1930s. It talks about both the journalistic genres themselves (notes, editorials, reports), and the genres of business communication (orders, decisions, bylaws, etc.) that played a signifi cant role in the press of those years. The article also considers the genres of "letters" (in its genre variations), the "heroic list" and the "black list". The article analyses the factors that infl uenced creation of the genre palette of the media, including the perception of journalism as means of propaganda, the need to solve production tasks facing collective farms, state farms and machine and tractor stations, insuffi cient journalistic skills of editorial staff. The research is based on local periodicals of the Amur Region in 1934.

Based on two newspapers published in different socio-political contexts, one in Nice, France, the other in Geneva, Switzerland, we would like to compare the way these two dailies view crimes against property. Does the journalist report theft, breach of trust or break and enter in the same way? Are the same variables used in the articles or are important changes made from one article to the other? If such is the case, who orders the changes in the structure of the articles? The work, which comprises a systematic list of six months daily articles, covers all typical situations published in the two newspapers. It seems, then, that the persons mentioned in the papers who belong to minority, as opposed to the majority groups, are generally presented as responsible for crime. It seems, too, that individuality disappears in the reconstruction of the reality by the media. All in all, the analysis shows that the press exercises only a relative influence on its readers.

Society (society) is a group of people who form a semi-closed (or semi-open) system, where most interactions are between individuals in the group. The variety of education received by students in this community is very much. These include the formation of habits, formation of knowledge, attitudes and interests, as well as moral and religious formation. Education in community education can be said to be indirect education, education carried out unconsciously by the community. And the students themselves consciously or not, they have educated themselves, strengthening their faith and self-confidence in the values ​​of morality and religion in society. That is, the community environment influences the development of students. The influence given by the environment is intentional and accidental. That is, the environment has no specific intentions in influencing the development of students. And the community environment is very influential for children's character development. If the child is in a good community environment, it will also have a good influence on the development of the child's character. Likewise, on the other hand a bad environment can also have a bad influence on children's character development. As parents, they must be smart and smart to choose a good environment for their children, because it will determine the child's character development. Character education as an effort to develop character is an effort made by the world of education to help students understand, care and act in accordance with ethical values. The purpose of character education is to form characters that are implemented in the subject's essential values ​​with the behaviors and attitudes they have. In this case the formation of character, there must be educational networks. Especially in information technology and telecommunications today, one of the factors that have a huge influence on development or vice versa is the destruction of the character of society or the nation is mass media, especially electronic media, with the main actors being television. Actually the magnitude of the role of the media, especially print and radio media, is in the development of national character. The mass media plays a dual role. On the one hand, playing public service advertisements or touching advertisements, on the other hand broadcasts programs/soap operas which actually show negative things, which ultimately are not shunned, instead imitated by the audience. The media must be controlled by the state. The state has an obligation to control all media activities, so that they are in accordance with the goals of the country itself. The legal instruments must be clear and fair. Indonesia itself has a Depkominfo, but only regulates frequency policies, broadcasting rights, and so on. More specifically, there is the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI), which was formed more independently, but recognized by the government. KPI is expected to be able to filter media activities (especially television) to suit the country's goals, norms, culture, customs, and of course religion. However, until now, the KPI is considered to be still quite weak in acting (filtering), and so than that, it is very necessary (strength) of the participation of the community in controlling these media.
