Abstract. There is as yet no consensually agreed-upon situational taxonomy. The current work addresses this issue and reviews extant taxonomic approaches by highlighting a “road map” of six research stations that lead to the observed diversity in taxonomies: (1) theoretical and conceptual guidelines, (2) the “type” of situational information studied, (3) the general taxonomic approach taken, (4) the generation of situation pools, (5) the assessment and rating of situational information, and (6) the statistical analyses of situation data. Current situational taxonomies are difficult to integrate because they follow different paths along these six stations. Some suggestions are given on how to spur integrated taxonomies toward a unified psychology of situations that speaks a common language.

Abstract In structuralist linguistics, compounds are argued not to constitute morphological categories, due to the absence of systematic form-meaning correspondences. This study investigates subsets of compounds for which systematic form-meaning correspondences are present: adjective–noun compounds in Mandarin. We show that there are substantial differences in the productivity of these compounds. One set of productivity measures (the count of types, the count of hapax legomena, and the estimated count of unseen types) reflect compounds’ profitability. By contrast, the category-conditioned degree of productivity is found to correlate with the internal semantic transparency of the words belonging to a morphological category. Greater semantic transparency, gauged by distributional semantics, predicts greater category-conditioned productivity. This dovetails well with the hypothesis that semantic transparency is a prerequisite for a word formation process to be productive.

Agricultural development is determined by various factors, such as environmental, economic, demographic, or social circumstances. In order to present the level of this development as com-prehensively as possible, a multidimensional analysis should be carried out with an appropriate methodology. In this article, a taxonomic approach known as the Hellwig’s method was used to determine the level of agricultural development. The area of research was the territory of Poland, divided into voivodships, which are the main units of the administrative division of the country. The development of agriculture thus determined was correlated with activities pursued by the National Agricultural Support Centre (NASC), an institution responsible for the management of agricultural real estate owned by the State Treasury in Poland. The results showed that the NASC’s activities are related to the level of agricultural development in every voivodship. The investigated model of rural space management was shown to be a rational one, performing well in today’s market conditions. The proposed methodology could adapt to similar situations and can be used in similar research on rural areas.

Seven strains of the genus Sphaerotilus were obtained from natural thermal sulfide (strains D-501T, D-502, D-504, D-505 and D-507) and low-temperature ferrous (strain HST) springs and from an activated sludge system (strain D-380). These Sphaerotilus isolates and strains of Sphaerotilus natans obtained from the DSMZ (S. natans DSM 6575T, DSM 565 and DSM 566) were studied using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. All strains had Q-8 as the major quinone and C16 : 1ω7, C16 : 0 and C18 : 1ω7 as the major fatty acids. The DNA–DNA hybridization results and 16S rRNA, hsp60 and gyrB gene sequencing experiments showed that isolates D-501T, D-502, D-504, D-505, D-507 and D-380 were closely related to the type strain of S. natans DSM 6575T. However, strains D-501T, D-502, D-504, D-505 and D-507 significantly differed from the heterotrophic strain S. natans DSM 6575T by their capability for lithotrophic growth with reduced sulfur compounds as an electron donor for energy conservation and some other phenotypic features. For this reason, strains D-501T, D-502, D-504, D-505 and D-507 merit a separate taxonomic classification at the subspecies level. The name Sphaerotilus natans subsp. sulfidivorans subsp. nov. (type strain D-501T = DSM 22545T = VKM B-2573T) is proposed. The subspecies Sphaerotilus natans subsp. natans subsp. nov. is automatically created as a result of this proposal. Strain D-380 was phenotypically closely related to S. natans DSM 6575T. Strains D-380 and S. natans DSM 6575T were assigned to the subspecies Sphaerotilus natans subsp. natans subsp. nov. (type strain DSM 6575T = ATCC 13338T). The 16S rRNA, hsp60 and gyrB gene sequences obtained for strains HST and DSM 565 showed very low sequence similarity values of 97.3 %, 89.7 % and 88.4 %, respectively, with S. natans DSM 6575T. A Gram-negative-staining, obligately aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped and chemoheterotrophic bacterium, designated strain MN1-1006T, was isolated from an ascidian (sea squirt) sample, and was studied using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the new isolate shared approximately 93–99% sequence similarity with recognized species of the genus Rubritalea within the phylum ‘Verrucomicrobia’. DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain MN1-1006T and Rubritalea squalenifaciens HOact23T and Rubritalea sabuli YM29-052T were 57% and 14.5%, respectively. Strain MN1-1006T produced carotenoid compounds that rendered the cell biomass a reddish pink colour. The strain also contained squalene. The cell-wall peptidoglycan of the novel strain contained muramic acid and meso-diaminopimelic acid. The DNA G+C content of strain MN1-1006T was 51.4 mol%. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C14:0, iso-C16:0 and anteiso-C15:0. The major isoprenoid quinone was MK-9. On the basis of these data, it was concluded that strain MN1-1006T represents a novel species of the genus Rubritalea, for which the name Rubritalea halochordaticola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MN1-1006T ( = KCTC 23186T = NBRC 107102T).

Acantholaimusis a species-rich genus of deep-sea nematodes, often with dozens of species found at the same locality but each represented by single or few individuals. Species discrimination by morphological characters in this genus is therefore often difficult due to transitional forms that may be referred to several species because of lack of data on intraspecific variability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the intraspecific variability of morphological characters that are most often used inAcantholaimustaxonomy, in order to distinguish those which are most informative for species differentiation. A reverse taxonomic approach was applied for initial species discrimination. Two loci, one each from small and large subunits of rRNA, were sequenced for 59Acantholaimusspecimens from two deep-sea locations. Twenty-seven Molecular Operational Taxonomic Units (MOTU) were identified, of which 12 were represented by more than one individual. These were then analysed for intraspecific variability in morphological characters. Some of the examined characters showed high intraspecific variability; specifically: length of cephalic setae; distance from anterior end to amphid; shape of anterior setae; position and arrangement of cervical setae. In the absence of genetic data, these characters should be used with caution for differential diagnoses or species discrimination. Other characters were more conservative within the same MOTU: body proportions; length of outer labial setae; amphidial diam.; appearance of lateral field; general arrangement of cervical setae; and shape of tail. These characters may be successfully used for species discrimination in the absence of molecular data.

A novel actinobacterium, strain A8036T, isolated from soil, was investigated by using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. The organism formed extensively branched substrate hyphae that generated spiral chains of spores with irregular surfaces. The cell wall contained meso-diaminopimelic acid (type III) and cell-wall sugars were glucose, madurose, mannose and ribose. The predominant menaquinones were MK-9(H6) and MK-9(H4). The phospholipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylinositol mannosides. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1 cis9, C16 : 0, C15 : 0 and 10-methyl C17 : 0. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the closest phylogenetic neighbours of strain A8036T were Actinomadura meyerae DSM 44715T (99.23 % similarity), Actinomadura bangladeshensis DSM 45347T (98.9 %) and Actinomadura chokoriensis DSM 45346T (98.3 %). However, DNA–DNA relatedness and phenotypic data demonstrated that strain A8036T could be clearly distinguished from the type strains of all closely related Actinomadura species. Strain A8036T is therefore considered to represent a novel species of the genus Actinomadura , for which the name Actinomadura geliboluensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is A8036T ( = DSM 45508T = KCTC 19868T).

Girardia Ball, 1974 is the most diverse and widely distributed genus of the family Dugesiidae (Platyhelminthes: Continenticola) in the Neotropical region. Seven out of the 52 species of the genus are known for Argentina. The Somuncurá Plateau is a region in northern Patagonia with several endemic flora and fauna, but little is known about the free-living Platyhelminthes. We describe two new species of Girardia partially inhabiting in sympatry in the Somuncurá Plateau: Girardia somuncura sp. nov. and Girardia tomasi sp. nov. The identification criteria that we followed was an integrative taxonomic approach based on morphological and molecular data. Thus, we used anatomical features focused on the reproductive system, together with a phylogenetic analysis, using a mitochondrial (COI barcode region) genetic marker. This study is the first phylogenetic analysis of the genus Girardia in which we include the southernmost representatives of America here described, thus making it possible to incorporate them in global phylogenies.

Abstract A novel Gram-staining-negative and short-rod-shaped bacterial strain designated as 1NDH52T was isolated from tidal flat sediments and characterized by using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. The predominant cellular fatty acids of strain 1NDH52T were summed feature 8 (C18:1 ω7c and/or C18:1 ω6c) and C14:0 2-OH; the major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and sphingoglycolipid; the major respiratory quinones were Q-10 and Q-9. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain 1NDH52T belonged to the genus Croceicoccus with high similarities to the close type strains Croceicoccus pelagius Ery9T, Croceicoccus sediminis S2-4-2T and Croceicoccus bisphenolivorans H4T. Phylogenomic analysis indicated that strain 1NDH52T formed an independent branch distinct from the known type strains of this genus. Digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) and average nucleotide identity (ANI) values between strain 1NDH52T and the three type strains above were well below thresholds of 70% DDH and 95-96% ANI for species definition, implying that strain 1NDH52T should represent a novel genospecies. The genomic DNA G + C content was 62.6%. The carotenoids production of the novel strain was determined by the detection of the pigment absorption spectrum and the identification of the complete biosynthetic gene cluster in its genome. Based on the phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, strain 1NDH52T is concluded to represent a novel species of the genus Croceicoccus, for which the name Croceicoccus gelatinilyticus sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain of the species is 1NDH52T (= GDMCC 1.2381T = KCTC 82668T). The description of the genus Croceicoccus has also been emended.
