scholarly journals THE NONLINEAR ASYMMETRIC RELATIONSHIP AMONG IMPLIED VOLATILITY INDICES OF INDIAN STOCK MARKET, GOLD, AND OIL: EVIDENCE FROM NARDL MODEL

The paper aims to examine the nonlinear asymmetric relationship among the implied volatility indices of the Indian stock market, gold, and oil for the period from 2nd March 2009 to 29th October 2021. Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) model results provide evidence of asymmetric nonlinear relationship among the selected variables in the short-run and the long-run. The positive and negative shocks to gold and oil implied volatility indices have a positive and significant influence on the implied volatility of the Indian stock market. The expected volatility of gold has a short-term symmetric impact on expected stock market volatility in the short run. Whereas, the implied volatility of oil has a long-run asymmetric impact on the implied volatility of the stock market. Increasing volatility in oil prices can be viewed as a signal for the starting point for the volatility of the Indian stock markets. In the long run, positive shocks to gold volatility have more impact on the expected volatility of the Indian stock market than the negative. This indicates that investors are shifting their investments from gold to stocks for higher returns when the gold prices are fluctuating.

Abstract The paper investigates the effect of exchange and inflation rate on stock market returns in India. The study uses monthly, quarterly and annual inflation and exchange rate data obtained from the RBI and market returns computed from the Indian share market index from January, 2000 to June, 2020.The paper uses the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) co-integration technique and the error correction parametization of the ARDL model for investigating the effect on Indian Stock markets. The GARCH and its corresponding Error Correction Model (ECM) were used to explore the long- and short-run relationship between the India Stock market returns, inflation, and exchange rate. The paper shows that there exists a long term relationship but there is no short-run relationship between Indian market returns and inflation. But, there is periodicity of inflation monthly considerable long run and short-run relationship between them existed. The outcome also illustrates a significant short-run relationship between NSE market returns and exchange rate. The variables were tested for short run and it was significantly shown the positive effects on the stock market returns and making it a desirable attribute of which investors can take advantage of. This is due to the establishment of long-run effect of inflation and exchange rate on stock market returns.

From a decade or so Indian continent has become the centre of attraction in the global economies. This changed outlook is due to the fact that India embraces vast availability of resources and opportunities which makes it the most vibrant global economy in the current scenario of worldwide sluggishness. On this path of growth and prosperity India is showing stiff commitments and competitive edges with developed as well as emerging countries. To be more specific, during this voyage in the Asia pacific region recently on one side India has seen stronger bonding with some of its old mates like Japan but on the other part it has faced strain like situation from its stronger competitor contender china on the same time. Hence, in this context the main aim of this paper is to examine the long run and short run equilibrium impacts of Japan and Chinese stock index as well as macroeconomic variables impact on Indian stock market. This paper finds the presence of both long and short run equilibrium impacts from China and Japan to India. In case of Japanese financial market (Nikki 225) has a trivial negative but significant long run impact whereas, the Chinese stock index (SSE composite) is operating at the short run with the same mild negative but significant impact on the Indian stock market. The results of the impact of macroeconomic variables find the existence of long run as well as short run equilibrium from some of the selected variables on Indian stock market.

The present paper determines the repercussions of the coronavirus on the Indian financial markets by taking the eight sectoral indices into account. By taking the sectoral indices into account, the study deduces the impact of virus outbreak on the various sectoral indices of the Indian stock market. Employing Welch's t-test and Non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test, we empirically analysed the daily returns of eight sectoral indices: Nifty Auto, Nifty FMCG, Nifty IT, Nifty Media, Nifty Metal, Nifty Oil and Gas, Nifty Pharma, and Nifty Bank. The results unveiled that pandemic had a negative impact on the automobile, FMCG, pharmaceuticals, and oil and gas sectors in the short run. In the long run, automobile, oil and gas, metals, and the banking sector have suffered enormously. The results further unveiled that no selected indices underperformed the domestic average, except NIFTY Auto.

At present stock return is significantly related to other global stock markets. The present paper empirically investigates the short run and long run equilibrium relationship between the stock market of India, Japan Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, China, and Australia monthly data during January 1995 to December 2013. Researcher employs correlation test, multivariate co-integration framework, Vector Auto Regressive error-correction model and Granger causality test with reference to financial up evils in Asia and world viz., Asian crisis (1997/98), financial crisis (2008) Inflation conditions, Natural disasters, financial up evils etc. of long run relationship. Results find that the Indian stock market return is significantly co-integrated with long run and short run situations/causalities in Asian Stock returns.

Although the significance of the foreign investors constructing the significant magnitude of GDP increases for the emerging markets, their equity markets' attractiveness is affected by their vulnerability to geopolitical risk. The purpose of this study is to empirically investigate the effect of the stock market globalization on the correlation between economic growth and geopolitical risk in Brazil. After the dynamic correlation between economic growth and the geopolitical risk in Brazil is obtained by DCC-GARCH(1,1) methodology, the nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) model is employed to examine the asymmetric relationship among variables. The findings demonstrate while the changes in the globalization of the stock market decrease the connection between economic growth and geopolitical risk in the long-run, the positive changes in the participation of foreign investors make economic growth and geopolitical risk more connected the in short-run. Moreover, this impact is asymmetric. This chapter provides valuable implications for international investors and policymakers.

Foreign investment is a major factor to determine volatility in the stock market. To discover the influence on Stock Market volatility of foreign investment we have considered FE, FD, and FDI as proxy variables of foreign investment and Indian stock market volatility is represented by Indian vix. The period for this study is 2009 to 2017 (monthly data).  To address this issue of volatility in the long/short-run we have applied the ARDL. The preference given to the ARDL model over Johansen co-integration is to the difference in the order of integration among the variables. ARDL model allows us to combine the I(0) and I(1) series whereas I(1) required in the case of Johansen approach. Results of unit root confirm the I(0)/I(1) order of integration, which allows us to apply the ADRL bound test. F-statistics is higher than the upper bound critical value at 10%, 5% and providing the evidence of co-integration among variables at a 5% level of significance. Hence, there is a long-run relationship amid the variables. Long-run form results show the negative sign of the coefficient and it is significant. The ECM value is (-0.9671) and it confirms that nearly 96.71 % of the inaccuracy rose in each period and automatically corrected in specified time period.

Purpose – This study aims to investigate the dynamic relationships between oil price shocks and Indian stock market. Design/methodology/approach – The study used daily data for the period starting from January 2001 to March 2013. In this study, Johansen's cointegration test, vector error correction model (VECM), Granger causality test, impulse response functions (IRFs) and variance decompositions (VDCs) test have been applied to exhibit the long-run and short-run relationship between them. Findings – The cointegration result indicates the existence of long-term relationship. Further, the error correction term of VECM shows a long-run causality moves from Indian stock market to oil price but not the vice versa. The results of the Granger causality test under the VECM framework confirm that no short-run causality between the variables exists. The VDCs analysis revealed that the Indian stock markets and crude oil prices are strongly exogenous. Finally, from the IRFs, analysis revealed that a positive shock in oil price has a small but persistence and growing positive impact on Indian stock markets in short run. Originality/value – The study would enhance the understandings of the interaction between oil price volatilities and emerging stock market performances. Further, the study would enable foreign investors who are interested in Indian stock market helps in understanding the conditional relationship between the variables.

This study aimed to determine the impact of domestic gold prices, interest rates in the stock market index (VNI) in Vietnam for the period of January 2009 to December 2018. This study employed the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) to check the association of Independent variable gold prices and the interest rate on the dependent variable stock market index. The results show a close correlation together in the long-run. The Vietnam stock index is adversely affected by fluctuations in the credit market in the short-run. We observed that domestic gold prices and interest rates have one-way causal relations to the stock price index. Similarly, interest rates were causal for gold prices and still not yet had any particular direction. The adjustment in the short-run moves the long-run equilibrium, although the change is quite slow.

The study examined the effect of exchange rate and inflation on stock market returns in Ghana using monthly inflation and exchange rate data obtained from the Bank of Ghana and monthly market returns computed from the GSE all-share index from January 2000 to December 2013. The autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) cointegration technique and the error correction parametization of the ARDL model were used for examining this effect. The ARDL and its corresponding error correction model were used in establishing the long- and short-run relationship between the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) market returns, inflation, and exchange rate. The result of the study showed that there exists a significant long-run relationship between GSE market returns and inflation. However, no significant short-run relationship between them existed. The result also showed a significant long- and short-run relationship between GSE market returns and exchange rate. The variables were tested for long memory and it was observed that such property did exist in these variables, making it a desirable feature of which investors can take advantage of. This is due to the establishment of long-run effect of inflation and exchange rate on stock market returns.

PurposeThis paper aims to examine association of money demand with key macroeconomic variables in Pakistan. The paper also investigates the asymmetric effect of real effective exchange rate (REER) on money demand.Design/methodology/approachThe study employs both linear autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and non-linear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) model. Annual data from 1970 to 2018 is used which is subjected to non-linearity through partial sum concept. Empirical analysis is conducted to prove if money demand is influenced by currency appreciation or depreciation, for long and short run.FindingsCointegration test indicates existence of a long-run relationship between money demand and its determinants. Results from NARDL model suggest negative relation between money demand and inflation in long and short run. Real income shows positive but a very minimal and insignificant effect on money demand in long and short run. Impact of call money rates is statistically significant and negative on M1 and M2. Wald tests and differing coefficient sign confirm presence of asymmetric relation of REER in long run with M2, whereas in short run we observe a linear, symmetrical relation of REER with M1 and M2. Stability diagnostic tests (CUSUM and CUSUMSQ) verify stability of M2 demand model in Pakistan.Practical implicationsResults signify that role of money demand is imperative as a monetary policy tool and it can be utilized to achieve objective of price stability. Additionally, exchange rate movements should be critically examined by monetary authorities to avoid inflationary pressures resulting from an increase in demand for broad monetary aggregate.Originality/valueThe paper contributes to scarce monetary literature on asymmetrical effects of exchange rate in Pakistan. Impact of variables has been studied through linear approach, but this paper is unique since it attempts to explore non-linear relationships.
