Authenticity in tourism has now been for many years a particular challenge for professionals in tourism studies. The concept itself is rather vague, but also useful in analysing the supply of selected tourist destinations. The focus of the paper is on the analysis of the elements of authenticity in the selected protected area of nature in Slovenia. As a case study, we chose the Škocjanski zatok Nature reserve, an urban wetland in the immediate vicinity of Koper. The restored and renatured area acts as green oasis and successfully defies various pressures on this sensitive environment already twenty years after its formal establishment. After conducting a field research and interviews with key stakeholders, we find out that the understanding of authenticity is important in order to preserve the biodiversity of the Škocjanski zatok Nature reserve and, consequently, its uniqueness (in the context of tourism development). This should also be the main guideline, and challenge at the same time, for the management in creating an adequate tourist offer.

Purpose The purpose of this viewpoint paper is to discuss whether dark tourism can be developed around the sites of recent terrorist attacks in France. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on a literature review of key terms: dark tourism; tourism; and terrorism. Findings The paper observes that dark tourism is not popular in France, and dark tourism activities are unlikely to develop anywhere nearer the places where the recent terrorist attacks happened. France remains rather conservative in some aspects related to death. Practical implications Recent events in France might challenge the leadership of the destination. The disturbing commonalities between tourism and terrorism make it difficult to figure out suitable recovery strategies that would contribute to enhancing the image of the destination without jeopardising the life of civilians. Originality/value This paper presents France as a politically unstable tourist destination. In general, this scenario is normally associated with less-developed countries or non-established tourist destinations.

Purpose This study aims to examine the hedonism attributes, memorable tourism experience (MTE), revisit intention and their relationships. This study explores the antecedents of hedonism as physical environment, shopping at the destination, service quality, personalisation and exclusivity that influence MTE. The relationship of hedonism factors with revisit intention is also investigated in light of the mediation of MTE between them. Design/methodology/approach For this study, a sample of 600 tourists is collected by using the convenience sampling technique. The collected data is analysed by using the confirmatory factor analysis-structural equation modelling approach. Findings The empirically validated model recommends the significant relationships between the hedonism elements and revisits intention with the mediating effect of MTE. The findings suggest that tourists who positively perceive hedonism attributes are more likely to have positive MTEs, and they revisit the destination. Originality/value This research study examines the relationship of hedonism determinants with MTE of the tourists leading to their revisit intention for a tourism destination. It helps to understand MTE as the main component to affect tourists’ revisit intention for a destination and make sustainable tourism.

The terms “thanatourism” and “dark tourism” relate to visiting places of human tragedy, which are increasingly developed as tourist destinations. There is a need to trouble thanatouristic assumptions through sharing and discussing lived experiences. These challenge the simplistic mechanistic marketing and conventional research practices of thanatourism. This dialogic autoethnographic study responds to this need, addressing thanatourism from the subjective and emotional perspectives of “insider” scholar-participant-consumers. Two interactive dialogic stories are presented by the lead and second authors, with the fourth providing a theoretically informed response. In the final section, the third author, an experienced autoethnographer and outsider to the thanatouristic topic and context, interrogates the lead author on concepts and issues emerging in the autoethnographic dialogue. Through engaging with this study, the reader is offered a multilayered, polysemic, emotionally provocative account of the ethical interface between thanatourism, consumer behaviour and marketing practices, and an exemplar model for future autoethnographic work.

The type of research used in this research is associative research. The population in this study were tourists who visited the Maimoon Palace with the samples taken in this study were 135 respondents. Withdrawal of the number of sample sizes is done by non-probability sampling using purposive sampling method. The data used are primary data and secondary data obtained through a list of statements and documentation studies. The data analysis technique uses structural equation modeling (SEM) with the Smart PLS version 3.0 analysis tool. The results of the study directly show that destination image has a positive and significant effect on revisit intention, memorable tourism experience has a positive and significant effect on revisit intention, destination image has a negative and significant effect on revisit intention, memorable tourism experience has a positive and significant effect on revisit intention, and tourist satisfaction has a positive and significant effect on revisit intention. Then the results of tests carried out indirectly indicate that tourist satisfaction is not able to mediate the relationship between destination image and revisit intention, but tourist satisfaction is able to mediate the relationship between memorable tourism experience and revisit intention. Millennials are typically fond of uploading their travel photos to social media to gain social recognition. Lombok is a tourist destination with considerable potential to increase the value and social status of its visitors, as it offers enough attractions to be considered among the world’s favorite celebrity tourist destinations; it is also globally renowned for its diverse natural and cultural beauty. This descriptive quantitative research aims to examine the effect of self-congruity, perceived social value, and experience satisfaction toward the intensity of using a digital social network to reinforce the identity of millennial users in Indonesia. This research involved 214 respondents who visited Lombok for leisure and used a digital social network to inform others of their tourism experience. After being analyzed with structural equation modelling as the data processor, the results show a direct and positive effect between perceived social value and the intensity of using a digital social network but no direct and positive effect between experience self-congruity and experience satisfaction on the intensity of using a digital social network.
