This study provides a newly updated perspective of information on severely screened 21 previous studies of the various measurement methods for improving physical fitness and providing determined cutoff values from our reserved elderly human database by based on the above 21 screened precious previous studies. We thus aimed to provide scientific evidence-based information regarding physical fitness standards for developing useful prognostics, promoting and maintaining health programs for sarcopenic elderly. 21 previous studies emphasizing criterion referenced standards and receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analyses for improving physical fitness were screened. For predicting the prevalence of sarcopenia, the t-test, logistic regression, linear regression, ROC curve analyses and voluntary categorizations such as twentieth or sixtieth percentile classification were used. Based on these scientific evidences, we determined cutoff values from our reserved DB, and realized that 75 years for men and 70 years for women is the transitional period during which there are large declines in muscle and fat mass (p<0.01), which reflects physical function tests (p<0.01) in both genders. Using the six factors with ideal cutoff thresholds, an individual exercise program can be designed for alleviating symptoms of frailty caused by sarcopenia for the elderly.

PURPOSE:The purpose of this study was to compare the daily fitness tests of nursing home residents and community-dwelling elderly women after 16 weeks program.METHODS:Thirty elderly women living in a nursing home (n=14) or community (n=16) participated in the study. The program was assigned 1 hour twice a week for 16 weeks to improve the physical activity for the elderly women. The daily fitness test assessed the physical fitness levels for elderly. The tests performed the 2-min step test, chair stand test, arm curl test, chair sit and reach test, backscratch test, 244-cm up and go test.RESULTS:A result of the study show that the daily physical fitness of the elderly women living in the community is higher than those living in nursing homes. After the program which induced physical activity, 2-min step test (<i>p</i><.05) and 244-cm up and go test (<i>p</i><.05) were much improved in the elderly living in nursing homes.CONCLUSIONS:Although the daily fitness of nursing home residents was lower than community-dwelling residents, there was a significant improvement after exercise program.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of dance sports and yoga program on body composition, physical fitness, blood lipids and liver function indicator in the elderly.METHODS: The subjects in this experiment were divided into the dance sports group (n=12, 6 male with age 70.83±5.23, 6 female with age 68.00±3.03) and the yoga group (n=12, 6 male with age 68.33±1.63, 6 female with age 67.33±2.50). The both exercise program were conducted once 60 minutes (warm-up: 10 minutes, main exercise: 40 minutes, cool-down: 10 minutes), twice a week for 15 weeks.RESULTS: The body composition, physical fitness, blood lipids and liver function indicator were found to have positive effects on all items in both groups without the significant interactions.CONCLUSIONS: We found that the 15-week dance sports and yoga program positively affects the improvement of flexibility, blood lipids and alanine aminotransferase. Therefore, long-term regular use of both dance sports and yoga programs is considered to be beneficial for the improvement and maintenance of physical and physiology variables related to the elderly’s health.
