Abstract Background To investigate the characteristics and clinical significance of serum lipids in patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). Methods The clinical and pathological data of 694 GIST patients in Liyuan hospital and Union hospital from 2012 to 2016 were retrospectively analyzed. Blood lipid levels in patients with varying degrees of risk were compared. Results The findings showed that LDL-C, HDL-C, and CHOL increased significantly in women, and CD34 positive. In patients with tumors size less than 5 cm in diameter, TG, HDL-C, and CHOL were significantly higher. TG levels were significantly higher in DOG-1 (a marker and has a high specificity and sensitivity in the diagnosis of GIST) positive patients than in DOG-1 negative patients (P < 0.05). S-100 positive patients had lower HDL-C levels than S-100 negative patients (P < 0.05). Lipids indexes were found to be correlated with GIST risk stratification and tumor site (P < 0.05). TG/HDL-C was were significantly different among patients with GIST in different locations (P < 0.05). Conclusion The clinical and pathological characteristics of the patients with GIST are closely related to the level of blood lipids. To a certain extent, information about level of blood lipids can be helpful for distinguishing benign and malignant GIST.

We performed univariable and multivariable Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to evaluate the association between blood lipids and risk of atrial fibrillation (AF), including low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglyceride (TG), Apolipoprotein A1, and Apolipoprotein B. Methods: Data on the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) related to blood lipids were obtained from the UK Biobank study with more than 300,000 subjects of White British European ancestry, and data for AF were from the latest meta-analysis of Genome-wide association study (GWASs) with six independent cohorts with more than 1,000,000 subjects of European ancestry. The univariable MR analysis was conducted to explore whether genetic evidence of individual lipid-related traits was significantly associated with AF risks and multivariable MR analysis with three models was performed to assess the independent effects of lipid-related traits. Results: The IVW estimate showed that genetically predicted LDL-C (OR: 1.016, 95% CI: 0.962–1.073, p = 0.560), HDL-C (OR: 0.951, 95% CI: 0.895–1.010, p = 0.102), TG (OR: 0.961, 95% CI: 0.889–1.038, p = 0.313), Apolipoprotein A1 (OR: 0.978, 95% CI: 0.933–1.025, p = 0.356), and Apolipoprotein B (OR: 1.008, 95% CI: 0.959–1.070, p = 0.794) were not causally associated with the risk of AF. Sample mode (OR: 0.852, 95% CI: 0.731–0.993, p = 0.043) and weighted mode (OR: 0.907, 95% CI: 0.841–0.979, p = 0.013) showed that a 1-unit increase in TG (mmol/L) was causally associated with a 14.8% and 9.3% relative decrease in AF risk, respectively. The multivariable MR analysis with model 1, 2, and 3 indicated that TG, LDL-C, HDL-C, Apolipoprotein A1, and Apolipoprotein B were not associated with the lower risk for AF. Conclusions: Our multivariable Mendelian randomization analysis (MVMR) finding suggested no genetic evidence of lipid traits was significantly associated with AF risk. Furthermore, more work is warranted to confirm the potential association between lipid traits and AF risks.

Aim: This study aimed to investigate the effect of a six-week theraband (strength band) exercise program on some physiological parameters in sedentary women. Method: The pretest-posttest model was used in the study. Before the study, the participants were asked whether they had any health problems. In this study, 34 volunteer women with a mean age of 26.91±2.64 years and a mean height of 164.20±4.36 who regularly attended a private sports centre were included in the study. Before and after the exercise program, body weight, fat percentage, and blood samples were taken in the morning on an empty stomach by experts in the appropriate laboratory environment at the health institution. The obtained data were analyzed in SPSS 22.0 package program. Paired Sample T Test was applied to compare the values before and after exercise. Results: As a result, it was determined that sedentary women who regularly performed theraband exercise for six weeks had a positive effect on their weight, fat percentage and blood lipids (Triglyceride, Cholesterol, HDL and LDL) levels (p<0.05). Conclucions: As a result, since the teraband (strength band) exercises we applied in our study were both affordable and can be easily performed by individuals at home, it has great importance for health that these exercises can be promoted more, and people's awareness. The association of androgenetic alopecia with metabolic syndrome has been investigated in several studies, with conflicting results. We conducted a meta-analysis to quantitatively evaluate the risk grade of metabolic syndrome and the metabolic profile in patients with androgenetic alopecia as compared with controls. In total, 19 articles (2,531 participants) satisfied the inclusion criteria. The pooled odds ratio for the prevalence rate of metabolic syndrome between the group with androgenetic alopecia and controls was 3.46 (95% CI: 2.38–5.05; p<0.001). Female sex, early onset, and African ethnicity were associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome. Furthermore, patients with androgenetic alopecia had significantly poorer metabolic profiles, such as body mass index, waist circumference, fasting glucose, blood lipids, and blood pressure. It is important for physicians to screen metabolism-related indicators in patients with androgenetic alopecia. More rigorously designed studies and larger sample sizes are required in future studies.

Abstract Background: To explore the temporal relationship between blood lipids and sleep duration and clarify their potential causality in Chinese middle-aged and elderly individuals.Methods: We used medical examinations and questionnaire data of 5016 Chinese middle-aged and elderly individuals in 2011 and 2015. Cross-lagged path analysis was performed to examine the potential bidirectional relationships between blood lipids and sleep duration.Results: In total population, significant bidirectional relationship was observed between sleep duration and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level and the path coefficients were -0.171 (P = 0.005) and -0.006 (P = 0.002). In contrast, there was a positive correlation between and sleep duration, and the path coefficient from triglycerides to sleep duration 4 year later (O = 0.001, P = 0.018) was greater than that from sleep duration to triglycerides 4 year later (b = 0.109, P = 0.847), with P = 0.030 for the difference between j and e. Longer sleep duration was associated lower levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (c = -0.275, P = 0.097) and total cholesterol (t = -0.329, P = 0.096) 4 year later. In stratified analysis, effects of sleep duration on blood lipids were only observed among individuals aged < 60 years, while the effect in the opposite direction was observed in elderly individuals, and the cross-lagged path coefficients were more significant in adults with BMI > 25.Conclusions: Temporal relationships between sleep duration and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglycerides were different. The strength and direction of the relationships may be related to age and BMI.

Background and Aims: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with such symptoms as steatosis, fibrosis, and liver cirrhosis. Kelussia has attracted assiduous attention due to its protective effects on the liver. The PNPLA3 gene is mainly expressed in the liver and plays a major role in the degradation rate of hepatic triglycerides. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess the effect of Kelussia extract on PNPLA3 gene expression in rats with fatty liver and healthy rats. Materials and Methods: This experimental study was conducted on 24 male Wistar rats in the control group (no treatment), obese group (which received a high-fat diet), treatment group 1 (which received a high-fat diet with Kelussia extract 400 mg/kg) and treatment group 2 (a high-fat diet with Kelussia extract 800 mg/kg) for six weeks. Blood samples were taken from rats and the factors of (LDL, HDL, Cholesterol, Triglyceride, and fasting sugar) were measured. After sampling the rat liver, the effect of Kelussia on PNPLA3 gene expression was investigated using the Real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique and analyzed in SPSS software (version 22). Results: Based on the results, Kelussia extract at a dose of 800 mg/kg resulted in a more dramatic decrease in PNPLA3 gene expression in rats with fatty liver, compared to a dose of 400 mg /kg, and this reduction was statistically significant, compared to the fatty liver group (P<0.05). The results of biochemical tests confirmed liver improvement in the rats treated with Kelussia extract at a dose of 800 mg/kg. Conclusion: It can be said that Kelussia had a beneficial effect on the reduction of blood lipids; moreover, it reduces the accumulation of triglycerides in the liver and improves the tissue structure of the liver by reducing the expression of PNPLA3 gene; therefore, with more studies, it can be considered a supplement to reduce blood lipids.
