Successful inclusion of assistive technology in intervention is limited by training and the level of comfort with technology of treating occupational therapists. Experienced and new therapists need exposure and training on high technology assistive devices newly introduced on the market. The purpose of the study was to identify the effect of a PowerPoint presentation to introduce an emerging high technology device on two groups: 30 licensed occupational therapists and 27 students in an entry level master of occupational therapy program. The PowerPoint developed introduced and educated participants on the Assistive Dining Device. Participants completed a demographic form, the Survey of Technology Use and the Quebec User Evaluation of Satisfaction with assistive Technology. Participants also to rated their satisfaction with the information presented. Results showed 98% of the participants were satisfied with the information presented and 95% of the participants were satisfied with their acquired knowledge base to recommend the device for client use. Master of occupational therapy students were similar in personal characteristics to occupational therapists but were both more satisfied with the Assistive Dining Device characteristics and had a more positive attitude toward technology. Participants who had a less positive attitude toward technology also had a slightly lower mean satisfaction with the Assistive Dining Device than those who had a more positive attitude toward technology. PowerPoint presentations appear to be one effective means of communicating information about new technologies. Further study needs to be done to evaluate the effectiveness of similar media included in packaging and marketing of assistive technology devices.

Background and objective: The successful adoption of technology is becoming increasingly important to functional independence and successful ageing in place. A better understanding of technology usage amongst older people may help to direct future interventions aimed at improving their healthcare. We aimed to obtain the first data regarding technology use, including gerontechnologies, represented by fall detectors, from older adults in Lithuania. Material and methods: The research was carried out in the framework of the project Smart Gerontechnology for Healthy Ageing, which involved assessing the use of technologies and the readiness to use gerontechnologies, as represented by fall detectors. A total of 375 individuals that were more than 60 years of age were enrolled in the study. The self-reporting questionnaires were completed by geriatric in-patients, hospitalized in the geriatric department, and also by community-dwelling older adults. Results: Geriatric in-patients’ use of computers and the internet was associated with age (every year of age decreased the probability of computer and internet use by 0.9-times) and a positive attitude towards new technologies—this predictor increased the use of a computer by six-times in comparison with people who did not have such an attitude. Sex and education had no influence on computer use for geriatric in-patients. For community-dwelling older adults, the use of computers and internet was associated with age, education (a university education increased the use of computers and the internet by four times), and a positive attitude towards technologies. Conclusions: Lithuanian older women in the study used computers, the internet, and cell phones equally with men. Increasing age was a strong negative predictor of technology use. A positive attitude to new technologies was a strong positive predictor of technology use. Most geriatric patients and community-dwelling older adults were ready to use technologies that permit ageing in place.

Introduction Home assessments conducted by occupational therapists can identify hazards and prevent falls. However, they may not be conducted because of limited time or long distances between the therapist’s workplace and the person’s home. Developments in technologies may overcome such barriers and could improve the quality of the home assessment process. Method This scoping review synthesises the findings of studies evaluating information and communication technology use within occupational therapy home assessments. Results Fourteen studies were included and revealed the two main approaches to technology use: the development of new applications and the use of existing and readily available technologies. Facilitators and barriers to use were also identified. Facilitators included usefulness, ease of use and the potential for cost-effectiveness. Barriers to use included poor usability, unsuitability for some populations and perceived threat to the role of occupational therapy. The synthesis revealed that traditional in-home assessments conducted by therapists are more sensitive in identifying hazards. Conclusion The availability of new technologies offers potential to improve service delivery; however these technologies are underutilised in clinical practice. Technologies may offer advantages in the conduct of home assessments, especially regarding efficiency, but have not yet been shown to be superior in terms of patient outcome.

The following is an example of what the occupational therapists at the Allan Memorial Institute in Montreal have done to accomodate the changing psychiatric population at the hospital. Over the past few years it seemed that certain of our programmes, being too high level, were no longer suitable for the more chronic type patient, being admitted. Thus, a re-examination of attitudes towards treatment was necessary as was the establishment of programmes with a different orientation. In doing this, the focus changed from former techniques such as projective art to a concentration on more reality oriented programmes for this group. The two programmes described are examples of this.

Occupational therapists who wish to see services expand in community settings must be prepared to take an active role in program development. The article examines 12 program development strategies which are illustrated using the experience of developing a rural program in a social service system. Community occupational therapy services in Prince Edward Island were initially developed, from 1977 to 1979, by a small group of occupational therapists. The group obtained Federal Welfare Demonstration Grant funding for a pilot project which was administered by the provincial Department of Social Services. In 1979, the Prince Edward Island Provincial Government approved ongoing funding for an Island-wide community occupational therapy service.

Introduction Admissions decisions are among the most consequential assessment points in educating occupational therapists. Suboptimal measures of academic achievement and personal characteristics are often used to select candidates. The purpose of the study is to investigate reliability and validity evidence supporting the use of the multiple mini interview for selecting candidates to an occupational therapy master’s level program. Method The study used a prospective cohort design. Data sources included both archival data and prospective candidate-generated data (multiple mini interview scores, applicant file review scores and academic performance), analyzed using psychometric and correlational approaches. Results Seventy-seven of 80 candidates participated in the prospective component of the study. Overall reliability of a 10-station multiple mini interview was .72. Inter-rater reliability was reasonable. Weak interrelationships were found between multiple mini interview scores and other application components. Conclusion Multiple mini interview scores may be probing different attributes than the other components of the application package. Our study findings support the use of the multiple mini interview for selecting applicants to a professional master’s program in occupational therapy; however, future work should continue to investigate the predictive validity of the multiple mini interview.

This paper investigates the possible relationship between job satisfaction and academic performance of occupational therapists who have graduated from the University of Western Ontario in the years 1975 to 1978. Eifty-four percent of the graduates of this time period filled out questionnaires eliciting information on their satisfaction with their jobs as occupational therapists and with the profession of occupational therapy. This information was analyzed with the therapists' academic performance of Grade XIII and their four years in the Occupational Therapy Program. The results indicated that although job satisfaction related significantly to three individual academic courses it did not relate to overall performance as measured by grade average.

This paper examines some of the factors which were involved in the December 1974, decision, of the Ontario's Minister of Colleges and Universities to give approval to Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology to establish an experimental program in occupational therapy. This program is being launched without the endorsement of the provincial and national associations of occupational therapy which wish to maintain a baccalaureate level of education for occupational therapists in a university setting. Some questions which are explored in the examination of this case are: What is a College of Applied Arts and Technology? How is it different from a university? What is a profession? What is a paraprofession? Is occupational therapy a profession or a paraprofession? Why did Mohawk College propose an occupational therapy program? What factors contributed to the occupational therapists' inability to stop the proposal? What was the process of approval of the proposal? How important are status and prestige as factors in these issues? The following discussion will attempt to deal with these questions as they relate to the educational arrangements for occupational therapists in Ontario.

International trends in health care point to increasing development of community services. However, the majority of occupational therapists work in institutional settings. A study, between 1985 and 1987, defined and created a profile of existing community occupational therapy services across Canada, and identified the processes and strategies which led to the development of these services. One hundred and eighty nine (189) services, including home care, other salaried services, and private or consulting services were identified. A national sample of community occupational therapy program developers described processes and strategies from which the author suggests a general “ripple effect” strategy to enhance the occupational therapy contribution to the community.
