Research on sexual violence is often conducted within the qualitative paradigm. However, many writers have described the lack of specific detail provided with regard to decisions and processes involved in transcribing and analyzing this type of data. In this article, I will provide a description and discussion of the organization, categorization, and analysis of in-depth interviews in a recent study of women who sexually abused children. The study revealed common experiences of sexual and other abuse in the women’s childhood and adult relationships. These experiences created vulnerabilities that appeared to play a significant role in the women’s offenses. Although abused women rarely abuse others, the findings suggest that supporting and providing therapy to victims of abuse might minimize the potential for such outcomes.

Constatou-se que crianças e adolescentes vítimas de violência sexual são submetidas, muitas das vezes, a violência institucional e psicológica que levam a rememorar os fatos traumáticos quando de ações arbitrárias, agressivas, insensíveis e descapacitadas por parte de entes públicos durante a realização de inquirições judiciais, o que gera a revitimização e a violação de direitos.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: adolescente; criança; infância; revitimização; violência sexual.ABSTRACTBased on the compulsory examination as a witness in judicial hearings, the present paper analyses the revitalization of sexually abused children and adolescents, demonstrating the theoretical framework of comprehensive protection of children and adolescents and, at the same time, specifying the confrontation of sexual violence and contextualizing the revictimization and violation of rights in legal proceedings. The present research is based on the technique of bibliographic research from the analysis of books, scientific articles, theses, dissertations and legislations, as well as factual case studies, are used to analyze indicators on sexual violence against children and adolescents. The method of approach is deductive, from the analysis of the general premises on the subject to more specific papers about the topic. The used research methods are the monographic and the statistical procedure. It was found that arbitrary, aggressive, insensitive and disqualified actions by public entities during the conduct of inquiries put children and adolescents victims of sexual violence subjected to institutional and psychological violence that lead to the recall of traumatic events which leads to revictimization and violation of rights. Keywords: adolescent; Child; Childhood; Revictimization; Sexual violence.

Introduction: Recurrent exposure to childhood sexual abuse (CSA) seems to be higher among victims of sexual abuse. In this sense, experiences related to sexual violence can perpetuate within the family context itself in various ways. Here, we investigate the association between being exposed to CSA and having a child victim of sexual abuse. Method: We used a sample with 123 mothers, who were divided into 2 groups: one consisting of 41 mothers of sexually abused children and another consisting of 82 mothers of non-sexually abused children. History of exposure to CSA was evaluated by means of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire - Short Form (CTQ) and we used a logistic regression model to estimate the prediction values regarding having or not a child exposed to sexual violence. Results: Mothers of sexually abused children had significantly higher scores on CTQ, especially on the sexual abuse subscale (SA). According to our logistic regression model, higher scores on the CTQ significantly predicted the status of being a mother of children exposed to sexual violence in our sample (Wald = 7.074; p = 0.008; Exp(B) = 1.681). Years of formal education reduced the likelihood of having a child victim of sexual violence (Wald = 18.994; p = 0.001; Exp(B) = 0.497). Conclusion: Our findings highlight the importance of a possible intergenerational effect of sexual abuse. Family intervention and prevention against childhood maltreatment should take this issue in account.

Recruiting subjects for follow-up studies in child abuse raises ethical dilemmas. This paper examines the effects of the ethical stance taken in a study of a community sample of sexually abused children. The ethical code adopted required strict confidentiality and active consent to be interviewed from both child and carer, based on full information about the research objectives and method. The response rate was very low. A less rigid stance, which might have resulted in a larger sample, was considered inappropriate. Nevertheless, the quantitative and qualitative data yielded findings of interest to practitioners. Suggestions for future research practice are presented.
