The occurrence of white stem borer (Scirpophaga innotata Walker) in relation with other insect pest and natural enemies in the irrigated and rainfed lowland ricefields in Agusan del Norte was studied for two cropping seasons. Seasonal abunance of the white stem borer and associated arthropods were determined through sweep net, quadrat, and pan sampling in 12 individual harvest. There were three generations of white stem borer recorded during the survey as shown by the occurence of egg masses althought overlapping of generations was also noted. However, its population fluctuated as the crop matured.

The structure of insect pests and natural enemies associated with white stern borer(Scirpophaga innonata Walker) in the irrigated and rainfed lowland ricefields in Agusan del Norte was studied for two cropping seasons. Sweep net method was used to sample the populations of the various arthropods. More species of arthropods were sampled in rainfed lowland ricefields than in irrigated ricefields, however, difference in the diversity was not significant. Number of species and populations of arthropods were affected by cropping husbandry practices particularly weeding and application of pesticides. Climate did not significantly affect the arthropod diversity due to the erratic climatic conditions at the onset of the El Niño phenomenon.

ABSTRACTRecolonization of Natural Enemies after Insecticide Application in Rice Planting AreaThe study to assess recolonization of natural enemies after insecticide application in rice planting area was carried out in the wet season of 2013 at Karawang Regency. The application of several insecticides of rynaxypyr, fipronil, dinotefuran, pymetrozine, imidacloprid, and BPMC was conducted when brown plant hopper population was rising and yellow stem borer flight was occurring. Observation of natural enemies was carried out on 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, and 21 days after application (DAA) using sweep net for 4 swings per plot. The results showed that spiders were relatively safe to the rynaxypyr and fipronil insecticides with hampered recolonization index (HRI) of very light and light where recolonization occurred on 1 DAA. All tested insecticides highly affected Telenomus rowani with HRI of heavy to very heavy that this parasitoid recolonized at 7 DAA. On the other hand, all insecticides showed low influence on the recolonization of Tetrastichus schoenobii with HRI from unhampered to light hamper and the recolonization occurred on 1 DAA. The effect of rynaxypyr, fipronil, imidacloprid and BPMC application on Oligosita sp. and Anagus sp. recolonization was categorized to be low with HRI of light hamper that the recolonization happened at 1 DAA and 5 DAA, respectively. The insecticides of fipronil and BPMC were considered to slightly hamper the chironomid with the light value of the HRI and the chironomid recolonized at 1 DAA on fipronil and 3 DAA on BPMC.Keywords: Effect of insecticides, Recolonization of natural enemy, RiceABSTRAKPenelitian rekolonisasi musuh alami setelah aplikasi insektisida di pertanaman padi dilakukan pada musim hujan 2013 di Kabupaten Karawang. Aplikasi insektisida berbahan aktif rinaksipir, fipronil, dinotefuran, pimetrozin, imidakloprid, dan BPMC dilakukan saat populasi hama wereng coklat meningkat, sementara penerbangan penggerek batang padi kuning sedang berlangsung. Pengamatan terhadap musuh alami menggunakan jaring serangga sebanyak 4 ayunan per petak pada 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, dan 21 hari setelah aplikasi (HSA). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa laba-laba relatif aman terhadap insektisida rinaksipir dan fipronil dengan nilai indeks hambatan rekolonisasi (IHR) kedua insektisida tersebut sangat ringan dan ringan dengan kecepatan rekolonisasi laba-laba pada 1 HSA. Semua insektisida menekan sangat tinggi terhadap Telenomus rowani dengan IHR berat sampai sangat berat dan rekolonisasi parasitoid tersebut dinilai lambat yaitu 7 HSA. Insektisida menekan sangat rendah terhadap Tetrastichus schoenobii dengan IHR dari tidak ada hambatan sampai hambatan ringan dan kecepatan rekolonisasinya terjadi pada 1 HSA. Tekanan insektisida rinaksipir, fipronil, imidakloprid, dan BPMC terhadap Oligosita sp. dan Anagus sp. agak rendah dengan IHR ringan dan kecepatan rekolonisasi Oligosita sp. pada 1 HSA dan Anagrus sp. pada 5 HSA. Insektisida fipronil dan BPMC agak menekan chironomid dengan nilai IHR ringan dan kecepatan rekolonisasi 1 HSA pada fipronil dan 3 HSA pada BPMC.Kata Kunci: Pengaruh Insektisida, Rekolonisasi musuh alami, Padi

Experiment was conducted during winter season to study the diversity and equitability of insect pest species and natural enemies in insecticide treated brinjal fields. Highest number of insect pests were recorded in` Tracer 45 SC, Bactoil (Bt), Nimbicidene 0.03 EC and lowest was in Necstar-50 EC and Proclaim-5 SG treated plots. The highest total abundance of insect pest was recorded in the plots treated with Bactoil and Tracer-45 SC and lowest total abundance was in Helicide (HNPV), Proclaim-5 SG and Booster-10 EC treated plots. The diversity index and equitability of insect pest species were highest in the plots treated with Nimbicidene 0.03 EC and Bactoil in visual search and sweep net methods while Bactoil and Booster 10 EC in pitfall trap method. However, lowest diversity index and equitability were obtained from the plots treated with Booster 10 EC, Proclaim-5 SG, Necstar-50 EC, Tracer-45 SC in visual search and sweep net methods but also in plots treated with Nimbicidene 0.03 EC in pitfall trap method. In case of natural enemies, the highest number of families were recorded in Tracer-45 SC, Nimbicidine 0.03 EC and Bactoil treated plots while lowest was in Helicide, Booster 10 EC, Proclaim-5 SG and Necstar-50 EC treated plots. The highest total abundance of natural enemy was recorded in the plot treated with Bactoil and Tracer-45 SC while lowest abundance was in the plot treated with Necstar-50 EC and Boster-10 EC. The diversity index and equitability of natural enemies were the highest in the plots treated with Proclaim-5 SG, Bactoil, Helicide and Necstar-50 EC in visual search, sweep net method and pitfall trap method while lowest was in Booster 10 EC, Tracer-45 SC treated plots in visual search method, Booster 10 EC and Nimbicidene 0.03 EC treated plots in sweep net method, Necstar-50 EC and Nimbicidene 0.03 EC treated plots in pitfall trap method. The stem borer, Lixus algirus L. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is the major insect pest of faba bean in the Mediterranean region. This study investigates the field biology and fluctuation of L. algirus at Douyet research Station in Morocco during two cropping seasons 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 using two local faba bean varieties. The influence of sowing dates and varieties on the damage caused by L. algirus was investigated over different locations and seasons using a split-plot design. The overwintering adults appear in the field from February by feeding over the leaves of faba bean plants. Eggs are laid from Mid-February through late April and mostly during March. The egg peak ranged from 0.75 to 1.1 eggs per plant. The number of larvae increases during March and peaked in April. The larval peaks ranged between 0.45 to 1.5 larvae per plant. The larval development takes an average of 42 days. Pupation lasts about 21 days within stems. Adults emerged in early June. Life cycle duration was 80 days. One generation of L. algirus was recorded on faba bean varieties in Morocco. The mean number of eggs showed a positive correlation with total rainfall. The number of pupae and relative humidity was negatively correlated. Peach and almond leaves were the most preferred by the newely emerged L. algirus adult during the summer and early autumn period. Planting dates did not affect L. algirus infestation levels over all varieties tested and locations.

A study was conducted to assess and identify the arthropods associated with corn planted in the marginal uplands of Inopacan, Leyte, using pan trap and sweep net methods, done biweekly during the two cropping periods. Two major groups of arthropods were recorded which included the Arachnids and the insect group, consisting of nine (11) orders of insects represented by 59 insects species and 20 spiders. These arthropods belonged to phytophagous groups (chewing and sucking arthropods); natural enemies (predators and parasitoids) and the innocuous groups or considered “others” (scavengers and saprophagous) The most abundant insect pest species in corn were the Chrysomelidae and Scarabaeidae beetles, while leafhoppers (Homoptera) were moderately abundant in the crop. The predators were mostly ants (Hymenoptera), the spiders (Arachnids), and coccinellid beetles. The parasitoids included the braconid, ichneumonid, and chalcid wasps. The most abundant non-pest and innocuous species are the Dipterans which are potential hosts or prey of the biotic agents in the corn ecosystem. The abundance of pest species in corn is not yet alarming, which indicates that the pests are not attracted to the crops which were marginal in growth. The natural enemies were also occurring in moderate numbers adequate to suppress abundance of pest species. However, from the results, the corn planted in the marginal upland with chicken dung was observed to have the higher number of insect associations than the other treatments.

Sakir et al, 2018. Utilization of Refugia in Increasing Rice Production Based on Local Wisdom. JLSO 7(1): The use of refugia as a habitat for natural enemies of rice pest organisms has not been widely used by farmers on an ongoing basis in preserving the environment.  Therefore, this research aimed to observe  the effect of utilizing refugia on rice production. Based on observations for 18 weeks in 3 hectares rice field, field with refugia harbored an abundance of natural enemies or predators including dome beetles (Micraspis sp.), Tomcat (Paederus littoralis), needle dragonflies (Zygoptera sp), praying grasshoppers (Stagmomantis carolina), spiders hunters (Oxyopes javanus), nets making spider (Tetragnatha maxillosa), and wasps (Polistes sp.). Insect pest infestations of white pest/leaf roller (Nymphula depunctalis), fake white pest/leaf folding (Cnaphlacorosis medinalis), white rice stem borer (Tryporyza innotata), and walang sangit (Leptocorisa acuta) was low. The rice field with plant refugia in 2018 produced 8.13 tons compared to 5.4 tons of rice grain/ha of the preceding year (2017) of yield without refugia. Plant refugia can be applied to increase swamp rice yield.

This study was conducted to investigate the incidence of rice stem borer infestations and the species composition present in the selected rice fields. Data were collected between April 2017 and November 2018 across three locations, which include the upland rice field in Agbajege, Ogun state, rainfed lowland in Itoikin and Mangrove swamp in Igbogun, Lagos state, respectively. The incidence of rice stem borers was indicated by dead heart and white heads symptoms, while tillers were excised for rice stem borer identification and population. Results showed a high and low incidence of rice stem borers with no significant difference(p>0.05) at p= 0.29 and 0.37 between the early and late planting seasons in the rainfed lowland and upland rice fields respectively. Planting seasons were significant in the incidence of rice stem borers in mangrove swamp rice fields at p<0.05, p=0.01). This study showed that the predominant species of rice stem borers present in the three study sites were Chilo zacconius and Sesamia calamistis. C. zacconius was the most abundant species at 89% while S. calamistis was 11%. Rice stem borer populations were significantly higher at (p<0.05, p=0.000) in flooded zones while the highest rice stem borer populations were observed at the reproductive phase of the rice plants. Thisstudy showed that the planting seasons coincided with the peak period of the development of rice stem borers. Hence, conservation of natural enemies, monitoring and surveillance should be adopted in insect pest management in rice agroecosystems

Tillage can alter the soil habitats wherein many insect pests and their natural enemies reside during at least part of their life cycle. To enhance crop productivity and reduce climate change effects, conservation agriculture (CA) with reduced-tillage or no-tillage practices have been advocated to farmers. However, information relating to the effect of CA on insect pests and their natural enemies is very scarce, at least in the Indo-Gangetic region. In this study, the effect of tillage on the abundance of, and damage by, major insect pests (foliar aphids, root aphids, termites, and pink stem borer) and their natural enemies in wheat managed under three tillage practices, i.e., zero-till (ZT), reduced tillage (RT), and conventional tillage (CT) with (protected) and without (unprotected) insecticide protection scenarios, was investigated. Foliar aphid and termite numbers were lowest in the ZT-protected system, and highest in the CT-unprotected system. Pink stem borer damage was significantly higher in the ZT-unprotected system, whereas the root aphid number was maximum in the RT-unprotected system. The natural enemies of these four major insect pests of wheat showed variable trends under the studied tillage systems. The abundance and damage of these major insect pests showed a positive correlation with the normalized difference vegetative index (NDVI) and canopy temperature. The dynamics of the insect pests and their predators were driven by soil habitat-related changes (direct) as well as crop growth-related effects (indirect). A fine-tuning of insect-pest management tactics based on these relations would enhance the success of CA systems.

Three species of parasitoids viz., Telenomus dignus Gahan, Trichogramma japonicum, Ishii and Tetrastichus schoenobii Ferriere were recorded from the egg masses of rice yellow stem borer, Scirpophaga incertulas (Walker) in a field study. The extent of parasitism was high during Rabi (43.33 – 93.33 %) and low during Kharif (0 - 40.00 %). Parasitism by T. dignus was maximum in October (50.00 %), T. japonicum, in November (23.08 %) and T. schoenobii in February (55.55 %). dignus and T. schoenobii in combination parasitized maximum number of egg masses (41.82 %). Multiple parasitism by the three species was high in December (8.33 %) and January (7.14%). Parasitic potential was maximum, when T. schoenobii alone parasitised the egg masses followed by T. dignus and T. schoenobii in combination. Host density in the field influenced the extent of parasitism.

AbstractSorghum panicles offer a very rich microenvironment for many insect pest species and their natural enemies. Thirty arthropod species belonging to 28 families, pertaining to 9 orders were obtained from sorghum panicles planted in Sohag Governorate, Egypt, during the 3 successive seasons of 2016–2018. Out of these species were 14 pests, 16 predators, and 3 parasitoids. Lepidopteran and hemipteran pests were the most dominant species-infested sorghum-panicles during the mature stages of the panicles. Three microlepidopteran pests, the noctuid, Eublemma (Autoba) gayneri (Roth.); the pyralid, Cryptoblabes gnidiella Millière, and the cosmopterigid, Pyroderces simplex Walsingham, were recorded as major pest species infesting sorghum panicles in Sohag Governorate. The dipteran parasitoid species, Nemorilla floralis (Fallen) (Tachinidae) emerged from the pupae of the E. gayneri and C. gnidiella, while the hymenopteran parasitoid, Brachymeria aegyptiaca (Chalcididae) was obtained from the pupae of all the studied microlepidopteran pests. Spiders, coccinellids, and Orius spp. were the dominant predators collected form panicles. Post-harvest, larvae, and pupae of lepidopteran pests, especially P. simplex recorded (147, 96, and 79 larvae) and (47, 30, and 73 pupae)/10 panicles in 2016, 2017, and 2018 seasons, respectively.
