This paper presents a context-aware mobile framework (or middleware), intended to support the implementation of context-aware mobile services. The overview of basic concepts, architecture and components of context-aware mobile framework is given. The mobile framework provide acquisition and management of context, where raw data sensed from physical (hardware) sensors and virtual (software) sensors are combined, processed and analyzed to provide high-level context and situation of the user to the mobile context-aware applications in near real-time. Using demo mobile health application, its most important components and functions, such as these supposed to detect urgent or alarming health conditions of a mobile user and to initiate appropriate actions demonstrated.

Mobile context-aware systems focus on adapting mobile service provisions to the actual user needs. They offer personalized services based on the context in which mobile users' requests have been submitted. Since contextual information changes over time, the application of established itemset change mining algorithms to context-aware data is an appealing research issue. Change itemset discovery focuses on discovering patterns which represent the temporal evolution of frequent itemsets in consecutive time periods. However, the sparseness of the analyzed data may bias the extraction process, because itemsets are likely to become infrequent at certain time periods. This chapter presents ConChI, a novel context-aware system that performs change itemset mining from context-aware data with the aim at supporting mobile expert decisions. To counteract data sparseness itemset change mining is driven by an analyst-provided taxonomy which allows analyzing data correlation changes at different abstraction levels. In particular, taxonomy is exploited to represent the knowledge that becomes infrequent in certain time periods by means of high level (generalized) itemsets. Experiments performed on real contextual data coming from a mobile application show the effectiveness of the proposed system in supporting mobile user and service profiling.

Purpose – This paper aims to propose a conceptual model that will guide development of mobile applications to support value-added business-to-business (B2B) sales activities. Design/methodology/approach – The paper reviews the concepts of context-aware applications and context-marketing, then examines B2B selling and the creation of value, utilizing Terho’s model of value-based selling, and presenting the potential role of context-aware B2B selling in creating value. Terho’s model is then combined with a taxonomy of context modeling to produce step-by-step a conceptual model for developing context-aware B2B sales applications (CABS). Findings – By mapping the context-aware application development taxonomy against each stage of Terho’s “value-based selling” model, the CABS model is proposed. This model provides a platform for the B2B salesforce, their customers and information technology (IT) staff to work together in developing requirements and prototypes for mobile B2B context-aware applications. Research limitations/implications – The CABS model would require empirical testing to assess its viability and suitability. This would initially be done via focus groups in targeted sales organizations. Practical implications – The CABS model could utilized by sales staff and their customers to develop requirements for mobile context-aware applications to support B2B activity. In addition, the CABS model could be utilized in joint application design processes to enable sales and IT staff to work together in developing prototype mobile applications. Originality/value – While context-aware applications are beginning to transform business-to-sale (B2C) sales activities, it is clear that B2B sales could also benefit from these types of applications, but little progress has been made in understanding or developing their potential. The CABS model enables B2B sales staff and their customers to recognize these benefits and facilitate working with IT staff in defining requirements and developing prototypes.

During the last few years, total knee arthroplasty has evolved from basic surgery to restore basic function, to a fast-track procedure to relief pain and get the patients back to a high level of activity.. However, the way physiotherapy is performed, remained the same. This paper presents the results of 185 patients that used a mobile health application to track their recovery. Adherence and clinical results were evaluated and reported. Our study demonstrated an excellent patient acceptance and compliance of the outpatient autonomous recovery app. Patient satisfaction was outstanding, and functional recovery was securely within conventional range.

<p class="0abstract">Building context-aware mobile applications is one of the most ambitious areas of research. Such applications can change their behavior according to context or perform specific tasks in specific contexts. Regardless of the application, all context-aware mobile applications share the need to retrieve and process context information. This paper presents a Context Management tool for the Android platform (ACM). ACM allows easy access to internal on-board mobile sensors and hardware features extracting corresponding raw data. Raw context is processed into higher-level more human-readable context that is provided seamlessly to the mobile applications. Different methods are used for this purpose including fuzzy classifiers. Since different mobiles have different sensors and hardware features, ACM can adapt to the mobile device by deactivating access to unavailable ones. Information regarding the available sensors and hardware features and their specifications can also be queried. Additionally, applications can request notifications regarding context change or specific context values. In addition to providing developers with supporting classes and methods, ACM is accompanied by an application that allows developers to examine its functionality and capabilities before using it. The application can be also used to examine the readings of the different sensors in different situations and thus calibrate them as needed. Additionally, it can be used to modify and personalize default interpretations of raw context values to high-level ones. ACM has been tested empirically and the results show extreme interest of context-aware mobile application developers in its promising capabilities and that it is conducive to facilitating, speeding up and triggering development of many more of such applications.</p>

Since the emergence of mobile devices, the architecture of mobile applications has been transformed significantly. In mobile applications, the User Interface (UI) is one of the major elements, but its development is complex and time-consuming. Existing practices do not support various presentation issues of the UI at a higher abstraction level, in a retargetable fashion, with complete tool support. Therefore, it is critical to develop a simple and automated framework for the development of mobile UIs by exploiting model-driven engineering concepts. In this paper, a Unified Modeling language (UML) profile for Mobile User Interfaces (UMMUI) has been proposed, which employs some standard UML notations for representing the mobile UI requirements at a higher abstraction level. Subsequently, a complete open-source transformation engine has been developed to automatically transform the high-level source models (in UMMUI) into the target low-level React Native implementation. Finally, the applicability of the proposed framework is validated through two benchmark case studies, i.e., Patient Management System and Library Application. The results verify that the proposed framework allows the modeling of UIs with simplicity and generates the target code automatically with minimum transformation losses.

Mobile applications act as valuable tools that can be used by entrepreneurs and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) alike to market their products/services and considerably reduce costs of doing business. The government of Kenya has invested billions of shillings in laying of fiber optic cables in Kenya, improving Kenya‘s ICT sector and coming up with projects aimed at promoting the use of technology among businesses and citizens alike. With all of these investments, there are challenges that hinder the use of business mobile applications by SMEs. Although context awareness in mobile applications is gaining recognition among mobile user and developer communities, many design scenarios still do not incorporate required context awareness as one of their primary goals. Although there are strong context awareness frameworks for mobile applications, there is still potential to improve the usability of virtual learning systems. The study established that the concept of context independence including the physical context independence and the logical context independence from the applications and mobile devices provides a graceful solution in the form of a methodological framework for the development of context-aware systems for SMEs in Nakuru Town.
