Purpose: Traumatic dental injuries, majority of which occur at school and primary care given by teacher, should managed as soon as possible. The knowledge and attitudes of teachers is critical for the best prognosis of traumatized teeth. The purpose of this study was to evaluate knowledge and attitudes among elementary public and private school teachers in dental trauma management.Materials and Methods: A modified three-part questionnaire comprised of questions regarding demographic data, attitude and knowledge about dental trauma was distributed to 328 teachers (public schools:164/private schools:164). The results of the questionnaire were expressed as frequency distributions. Statistical analysis was performed by version 20.0 of the SPSS statistics software. Results: The average correct knowledge score was 4.96 out of 10. Two individual predictors significantly improved the respondents’ knowledge: being more than 50 years old age (p=0.001) and more than 15 years teaching experience group (p<0.001). While 84.5% of public, 79% of private school teachers found their knowledge poor; and 85% of public, 76% of private school teachers state they're not satisfied with their level of knowledge. Private school teachers had given significantly more correct answers to the questions about dental avulsion management than public school teachers (p=0.01). There was no significant difference between public and private school teachers' knowledge regarding dental trauma management. Conclusion: The level of knowledge in dental trauma management determined in this study was unsatisfying. Programs on increasing the awareness and motivation of teachers on dental trauma management in both types of schools are recommended.

ABSTRACT Objectives: Epilepsy is very common in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, occurring in 6.54 out of every 1000 individuals. The current study was conducted to determine the level of public awareness of and attitudes toward epilepsy in the city of Majmaah, Saudi Arabia. Subjects and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted in Majmaah, Saudi Arabia. The study population included respondents derived from preselected public places in the city. Stratified random sampling was used, and the sample size was made up of 706 individuals. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection from respondents after receiving their verbal consent. Almost 50% of the respondents knew someone who had epilepsy, and 393 (55.7%) had witnessed what they believed to be a seizure. Results showed that 555 (78.6%) respondents believed that epilepsy was neither a contagious disease nor a type of insanity. It was found that 335 (47.5%) stated that epilepsy was a brain disease, and almost one-quarter of the respondents said that the manifestation of an epileptic episode is a convulsion. Regarding attitude, 49% and 47.3% of respondents stated that they would not allow their children to interact with individuals with epilepsy and would object to marrying an individual with epilepsy, respectively. Conclusion: Although knowledge about epilepsy is improving, it is still not adequate. The study showed that the attitude toward epilepsy is poor.

Objective: One of the most common dental injuries is dental avulsion. This study, conducted in the western region of Saudi Arabia, aimed to evaluate parent’s knowledge and attitudes regarding the emergency management of avulsed permanent and deciduous teeth in children. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 393 parents recruited from six dental clinics and hospitals in Makkah and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The data were collected with a self-administered questionnaire that assesses the level of knowledge for managing deciduous and permanent avulsed teeth. Results: The total score for correct answers about managing permanent avulsed teeth had a mean of 4.77 and a standard deviation of 2.14 (out of 10 questions). With a permanent avulsed tooth, 35.37% were aware of dental reimplanting, 27.7% identified milk as an appropriate medium, and 57.5% would seek professional help immediately after dental trauma. Females and participants with a bachelor’s or higher degree had significantly higher levels of knowledge than males and participants with a high school or lower education. There were 28.5% of respondents who had a previous history of dental trauma for a child. A total of 62.1% knew that there is a difference in managing deciduous versus permanent teeth, but only 40.7% knew the proper management for deciduous avulsed teeth. Previous history of child dental avulsion was not found to be associated with more knowledge on managing avulsed deciduous or permanent teeth. Conclusion: Parents in the western region of Saudi Arabia have inadequate levels of knowledge to manage deciduous and permanent tooth avulsion. More efforts should be applied for conducting promotional health campaigns aimed at improving parents’ knowledge.
