In this paper, we propose a cheap, quick, and creative developmental kit for prosthetic applications, and we report on demonstrations in robotics education based on it. The proposed kit consists of an Electro-Myo-Graphic (EMG) sensor, an EMG-to-motor controller, and a wire-driven device. It is designed to be used to provide robotics courses to help middle school / high school / university students to understand today–s science and technology – especially prosthetics technology. The concept of prosthetics technology is generally difficult for participants to understand, so we provide the following three demonstrations in the course: (1) “Simple Prosthetic Hand” is an imitation of the most common commercially-available electric prosthetic hand. The “Simple Prosthetic Hand” illustrates that a low-precision design can be inexpensive to produce yet appropriate for the understanding of prosthetic hand technology. (2) The “Rock-Scissors-Paper Prosthetic Hand” indicates research-target prosthetic hands. It clearly delivers EMG-to-motion discrimination processes. (3) The “EMG Presbyopia Spectacles” exemplify the concept that even beginners can possibly use unique ideas to design creative prosthetic applications based on daily activities. The participants’ interactions with these three demonstrations contribute to their understanding the concept of prosthetic application. We have conducted the educational courses for middle school, high school, and university students. For middle and high school students, we have provided 2-hour lectures, and the demonstrations have helped the participants to understand why and how prosthetic applications work. For university students, we have provided a 6-hour robot design course with the kit. The participants have built both simple and complicated structures, and they have enjoyed controlling them with their muscles.

The research intends to investigate the body mass index, the self-weight perception and the intention of changing the weight in teenagers, from Timisoara, Romania. The data sample was made of 243 students of 11-18 years old: 37.9% in middle school and 62.1% in high school; 56.4% girls and 43.6% boys. The manner of work was a cross-sectional study, study case type. The results show that in middle/high school there are: underweight 39.8%/22.9%, normal weight 51.1% and overweight and obese, 9.1%/8.3, with a significant difference between the 2 age groups, the difference being very small. 62.2% of middle school students and 51.7% of the ones in high school appreciate their own weight as having the normal value. 24.4% of the middle school students and 32.4% of high school students consider that that they have a weight over the normal value, and at 15-18 years old, girls perceive weight as being significantly higher than boys. The students want to lose weight, 42.7% of middle school students and 42.8% of high school students. At 11-14 years old, boys want to gain weight more frequently than girls.

ABSTRACT Objective To examine the association of body image dissatisfaction (BID) with body mass index (BMI) trajectory among students from a metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro. Methods Data were analyzed for 809 middle school students followed from 2010 to 2013, and 1131 high school students followed from 2010 to 2012. BID was assessed using a body silhouettes scale. Type of school (public and private) was used as a proxy of socioeconomic status. Results In the middle school cohort, girls from private schools who wanted to have smaller and bigger silhouettes gained fewer BMI units than those who were satisfied with their body image ( p < 0.05). In the high school, girls from private schools who wished to have bigger and smaller silhouettes experienced greater BMI increase than girls who were satisfied with their body image ( p < 0.05). Also, in the high school cohort, boys from public schools who wished to have smaller and bigger silhouettes experienced smaller BMI increase than boys who were satisfied ( p < 0.05). Conclusion BID may be related to the BMI trajectory in girls from private schools and in boys from public schools.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to explore the ways in which adolescent students who stutter perceive their school experiences. Method This study used a qualitative, phenomenological research design. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 7 adolescent students who stutter (3 in middle school and 4 in high school). Participants were interviewed about their school experiences, including the effects of stuttering on academics, learning, teacher relationships, peer relationships, speech therapy experiences, and self-image. Data analysis consisted of transcribing interviews and analyzing them for emerging themes. Results Findings revealed that participants described a variety of experiences around the school setting. Participants reported less favorable middle school experiences. Middle school participants reflected more on teasing, bullying, and feelings of embarrassment, whereas high school participants revealed that teachers, staff, and peers were receptive and accepting of them and their stuttering. All participants reported that their speech therapy helped with classroom participation. Conclusions As a result of the participants' varied experiences, it is important to listen to and incorporate the voices of students who stutter into school, classroom, and therapy decision-making practices.
