Atkisson, Monaghan and Brent review in 'Using Computational Techniques to Fill the Gap between Qualitative Data Analysis an Text Analytics' three methods (qualitative data analysis, content analysis and text mining) that are used in order to examine streams of digital textual materials that are increasingly accessible through the Internet.

The recent mass digitization of text data has led to a need to efficiently and effectively deal with the mountain of textual data that is generated. Digitized text is increasingly in the form of digitized data flows (Brent, 2008). Digitized data flows are non-static streams of generated content – including twitter, electronic news, etc. An oft-cited statistic is that currently 85% of all business data is in the form of text (cited in Hotho, Nürnberger & Paass, 2005). This mountain of data leads us to the question whether the labor-intensive traditional qualitative data analysis techniques are best suited for this large amount of data. Other techniques for dealing with large amounts of data may also be found wanting because those techniques remove the researcher from an immersion in the data. Both dealing with large amounts of data and allowing immersion in data are clearly desired features of any text analysis system.

The authors would like to thank both Martine van Selm and Jan Kleinnijenhuis for their thoughtful comments regarding our paper. They each raise a number of interesting points. The comments focus broadly on three areas, and we will structure our response around those three areas. We will first address comments on the literature review, then the Veyor system and finally, comments on the analysis itself.

This research explores the qualitative researchers’ perceptions of computer assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) through content analysis of blogs. The purpose of this exploratory work is to understand the existing relationships that scholars have with CAQDAS, and how the use of these tools promotes or hinders engagement during the research process.

Every human has an innate culture nurtured since childhood, when going to college it's not uncommon someone wants to be a settled foreigner in a different culture area. The writing of this article aims to describe the behavior of young students who want to break away from their parents and take a college away from home. Using informants as a data source, the data that is presented use data through interviews and also the Internet, and then the research method used was descriptive qualitative data analysis. The study's results show that the behavior of students who lived in Surakarta, specifically at Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta, program Bimbingan dan Konseling still maintains an innate culture. However, trying to follow a culture in Surakarta, especially with their friends. This is seen because the association of the student world is undermining his behavior like that of their dominant friends but also highlights his behavior. The result of this study show students to explore the limits of their civil society lifestyle in Surakarta City and then to understand what going through. Also for people who want to become experts, especially at Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta.

Playing digital games is an important leisure activity for a large number of us. Research shows that a large number of children play digital games for leisure purposes. One of the games played is Minecraft. This chapter outlines how Minecraft is being used in junior year settings by referring to academic literature as well as communities of practice available on the internet. The authors outline a set of activities incorporating Minecraft aimed at seven year olds which were designed to introduce a series of curricular topics in a class in a Maltese school. Following qualitative data analysis the chapter outlines a series of outcomes that were extracted from this project

Qualitative content analysis consists of conventional, directed and summative approaches for data analysis. They are used for provision of descriptive knowledge and understandings of the phenomenon under study. However, the method underpinning directed qualitative content analysis is insufficiently delineated in international literature. This paper aims to describe and integrate the process of data analysis in directed qualitative content analysis. Various international databases were used to retrieve articles related to directed qualitative content analysis. A review of literature led to the integration and elaboration of a stepwise method of data analysis for directed qualitative content analysis. The proposed 16-step method of data analysis in this paper is a detailed description of analytical steps to be taken in directed qualitative content analysis that covers the current gap of knowledge in international literature regarding the practical process of qualitative data analysis. An example of “the resuscitation team members' motivation for cardiopulmonary resuscitation” based on Victor Vroom's expectancy theory is also presented. The directed qualitative content analysis method proposed in this paper is a reliable, transparent, and comprehensive method for qualitative researchers. It can increase the rigour of qualitative data analysis, make the comparison of the findings of different studies possible and yield practical results.

We present a qualitative data analysis framework that integrates perspectives from theme analysis, cultural models analysis, grounded theory, and content analysis. We demonstrate how these research traditions are united in their aim to, first, uncover meaningful themes and, subsequently, to understand those themes’ relationships to each other. To illustrate our approach, we present research on video gamers’ understandings of productive and detrimental responses to failure. Initial themes, cultural models, and grounded theory analysis of 10 semi-structured interviews led us to the theory that video games help players learn to cope more productively with failure, which we confirmed in a subsequent content analysis of text extracts from an online survey ( N = 64). Overall, we propose that commonly employed approaches for analyzing qualitative data can be usefully conceptualized as research steps or stages, which move from the initial identification of themes to understanding their relationships, and from inductive exploration to deductive confirmation.
