Owing to their growing complexity and their embedding in ever-changing environments, their design becomes increasingly critical. Thus, the many topics addressed in this book range from data integration on hardware level to methods for security and safety of data and to stochastic methods, data interferences as well as machine learning and search in decentralised systems. The globalization of the economy encourages massive population displacements and inevitably generates a cosmopolitization of societies. This leads to concern, misunderstanding and rejection. The most vulnerable social groups in society can perceive the population as intruders and enemies in social competition. Undoubtedly, the extreme spatial instability of fishery resources is among the many factors affecting migration dynamics. Various reasons for the mobility of fishermen are relevant around this concept. These include aspect related to traditions, to the capitalisation of activity, to technological innovations, and to innovation exchanges concerning the location of fish stocks. This article reflects on spatial increase of fishermen’s. The analyse are part of the paradigm of the sustainable management of common renewable resources, in particular fishery resources. It presents three lines of analysis: the reason for mobility; the choice of destination; and are the integration into host units.

SUMMARYAmong the many challenges to deal with, when a robot is interacting with its environment, friction at the contact surface and/or at the joints is one of the most important to be considered. In this paper we propose a control algorithm for the tracking of position and force (unconstrained orientation case only) of a manipulator end-effector that does not require the robot model for implementation. This characteristic has the advantage of making it capable to compensate friction effects without any previous estimation. Furthermore, no velocity measurements are needed, and the unit quaternion is employed for orientation control. Experimental and simulation results are provided.

We have developed a new solar irradiation model and implemented it in the SunIrradiance photovoltaic cell/module simulator. This model uses stochastic methods to generate the hourly distribution of solar irradiation on a horizontal or inclined surface from monthly irradiation values on the horizontal surface of a selected location and was verified with the measured irradiance data in Ljubljana, located in Central Europe. The new model shows better simulation results with regard to the share of the diffuse irradiation in the region than the other models. The simulation results show that the new solar irradiation model is excellent for photovoltaic system simulations of single junction PV technologies.

Mixing is one of the important processes to the many industries. Fluid mixing process typically involves three phases of fluid in the form of liquids, gases and solids. To obtain a desired type of mixing, one of the devices that can be use is a static mixer. In this study, a perforated plate static mixer with circle grid fractal design with two grades of porosity which are 50% and 75% will introduce. The purpose of implementing the two grades porosity of perforated plate in this study is to determine a performance of the two static mixers. In order to achieve the objective, the simulations of mixing fluid were carried out by using ANSYS CFX software. The simulation was carrying out primarily in cylindrical pipe with insertions of circle grid perforated plate. Three levels of laminar flow had been used which is Reynolds numbers (Re) equal to 100, 200 and 400. The performance of circle grid perforated plate static mixer will be evaluated by determining the Coefficient of Variation (COV). The simulation results also were compared in term of homogeneity level of mixing fluids to the Kenics static mixer. Based on the simulation results, the value of COV at selected plane in pipeline simulated for Kenics static mixer and the two grades porosity of perforated plate at Re = 400 are 0.000703, 0.0247and 0.00427 respectively. Since the values of COV between 0.01 and 0.05 are a reasonable target for many industry applications, the results for new approach of static mixer represent completely homogeneous mixing fluid for this application. Definitely this new approach of circle grid perforated plate with fractal design gave better results because of lower number of inserts and simple design of static mixer.

Construction safety is a key factor among the many factors related to the sustainable management of construction sites. Although research is underway to reduce potential accidents in the construction industry in Korea, the number of tower crane (T/C) accidents is consistently increasing based on the increased use of such cranes. In this study, the priorities of accident causes for each T/C type were derived and utilized for the sustainable management of construction sites. An analytic hierarchy process (AHP) questionnaire was completed by experts such as construction engineers, construction managers, safety engineers, and T/C operators with more than ten years of field experience. The results of the AHP questionnaire revealed that the leading cause of cab-control T/C accidents is poor operator visibility, while the leading cause of accidents related to remote-control T/Cs is the poor management of lifting objects and control of surroundings. The high-ranking causes derived in this study should be managed and priority measures should be implemented to reduce the number of T/C accidents.

In the Amazon, environmental governance (EG) is an important multi-stakeholder approach to the sustainable management of natural resources. There is by now a large theoretical literature on the many requirements for effective EG. There is also extensive empirical literature on EG in the Amazon. While empirical work in the Amazon has advanced our understanding of EG, it also has important limitations. There remains a need to unpack the many requirements for effective EG to identify violations of governance criteria to explain cases where EG is ineffective. There is also a need for multi-case comparative analyses of EG across diverse parts of the Amazon to identify common explanations for ineffective EG. Therefore, we review multi-criteria frameworks for the evaluation of EG, noting their contributions and differences. We draw on three recent frameworks for evaluating EG to suggest an integrated framework that can be applied to multiple cases for comparative evaluation. We argue that the use of an integrated framework for the identification of violations of specific criteria for effective EG can guide targeted conservation action. We then briefly discuss five study cases in the Amazon to outline how we could apply the integrated framework to identify unmet criteria to account for ineffective EG. We identify commonly unmet criteria for ineffective EG across the five cases. The identification of common criteria violated across cases can provide a basis for broader conservation strategies to improve EG.

For much of history, soil has played a major, and often central, role in the lives of humans. Entire societies have risen, and collapsed, through the management or mismanagement of soil; farmers and gardeners worldwide nurture their soil to provide their plants with water, nutrients, and protection from pests and diseases; major battles have been aborted or stalled by the condition of soil; murder trials have been solved with evidence from the soil; and, for most of us, our ultimate fate is the soil. In this book Richard Bardgett discusses soil and the many, and sometimes surprising, ways that humanity has depended on it throughout history, and still does today. Analysing the role soil plays in our own lives, despite increasing urbanization, and in the biogeochemical cycles that allow the planet to function effectively, Bardgett considers how superior soil management could combat global issues such as climate change, food shortages, and the extinction of species. Looking to the future, Bardgett argues that it is vital for the future of humanity for governments worldwide to halt soil degradation, and to put in place policies for the future sustainable management of soils.

This article investigates a drag-type vertical-axis wind turbine that is targeted for small-scale wind energy system applications. Based on aerodynamics models, the three-dimensional simulation studies have been carried out to obtain the force distributions along blades and eventually the torque and power coefficients for different vertical-axis wind turbine configurations. An optimal vertical-axis wind turbine configuration is chosen based on the comparative analysis, and a 2 kW prototype system has been implemented based on the design. The effectiveness of the three-dimensional models and simulation results has been verified by the measured data from the actual vertical-axis wind turbine system. The wake impacts to the vertical-axis wind turbine caused by nearby objects are also analyzed. The simulation results and the actual operation experiences show that the proposed system has the characteristics of low cut-in speed, high power density, and robustness to adjacent objects (such as buildings and other wind turbines), which make it suitable for small-scale wind energy systems in populated areas including urban environment.

Establishing mass-customization practices, in a sustainable way, at a time of increased market uncertainty, is a pressing challenge for modern producing companies and one that traditional automation solutions cannot cope with. Industry 4.0 seeks to mitigate current practice’s limitations. It promotes a vision of a fully interconnected ecosystem of systems, machines, products, and many different stakeholders. In this environment, dynamically interconnected autonomous systems support humans in multifaceted decision-making. Industrial Internet of Things and cyberphysical systems (CPSs) are just two of the emerging concepts that embody the design and behavioral principles of these highly complex technical systems. The research within multiagent systems in manufacturing, by embodying most of the defining principles of industrial CPSs (ICPSs), is often regarded as a precursor for many of today’s emerging ICPS architectures. However, the domain has been fuzzy in specifying clear-cut design objectives and rules. Designs have been proposed with different positioning, creating confusion in concepts and supporting technologies. This paper contributes by providing clear definitions and interpretations of the main functional traits spread across the literature. A characterization of the defining functional requirements of ICPSs follows, in the form of a scale, rating systems according to the degree of implementation of the different functions.
