In the present study, Sb/C nanocomposites have been synthesized using citrate-gel method in combination with a carbonization process at different temperatures in N2 gas. At reasonable carbonization temperatures, the porous Sb/C nanocomposites with novel foam like-interconnected three-dimensional structure, which is built-up by nanosized Sb particles covered by a carbon shell, are obtained. Among the synthesized composites, the Sb/C-600 sample, which is calcinated at 600 oC, exhibit the best lithium storage. At a discharge-charge rate of 0.1 C, the Sb/C-600 electrode can supply an initial reversible specific capacity of 640.7 mA h g-1, 1.7 times higher than the theoretical specific capacity of graphite anode. During 100 cycles, the electrode shows a slight capacity decay with 0.0348% of loss capacity per cycle. Because of this featured architecture, the Sb/C nanocomposites severe as anode material with enhanced lithium storage performances for rechargeable lithium ion batteries.

As anode material for lithium-ion batteries, graphite has the disadvantage of relatively low specific capacity. In this work, a simple yet effective strategy to overcome the disadvantages by using a composite of flake graphite (FG) and small-sized graphene (SG) has been developed. The FG/SG composite prepared by dispersing FG and SG (90:10 w/w) in ethanol and drying delivers much higher specific capacity than that of individual component except for improved rate capability. More surprisingly, FG/SG composite delivers higher reversible capacity than its theoretical value calculated according to the theoretical capacities of graphite and graphene. Therefore, a synergistic effect between FG and SG in lithium storage is clearly discovered. To explain it, we propose a model that abundant nanoscopic cavities were formed due to physical adhesion between FG and SG and could accommodate extra lithium.

As one of the most popular cathode materials for high power lithium ion batteries (LIBs) of the electrical-vehicle (EV), lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4 (LFP)) is limited to its relatively lower theoretical specific capacity of 170[Formula: see text]mAh g[Formula: see text]. To break the limits and further improve the capacity of LFP is promising but challenging. In this study, the ball-milling method is applied to the mixture of LFP and carbon, and the effective capacity larger than the theoretical one by 30[Formula: see text]mAh g[Formula: see text] is achieved. It is demonstrated that ball-milling leads to the LFP-Carbon interface to store the excess Li-ions.

Due to high theoretical specific capacity and abundant reserves, tin selenide-based materials have received tremendous attentions in the fields of lithium-ion batteries. Nevertheless, the huge volume changes during insertion/de-intercalation processes deteriorate the Coulombic Efficiency greatly. In order to solve it, the researchers have made great efforts by means of controlling nanoparticles granularity, carbon coating, ion doping et al. In this study, SnSe/Cu2SnSe3 heterojunction nanocomposites were synthesized by solvo-thermal method. The resulting SnSe/Cu2SnSe3 is a three-dimensional flower-like hierarchical nanostructure composed of nanoscale thin lamellae of a thickness of 8-12 nm. The unique nanostructure could shorten the diffusion path of lithium ions and expedite charge transfer, and therefore enhance the reaction kinetics. Compared with SnSe, the initial Coulombic efficiency of SnSe/Cu2SnSe3 is raised from 59% to 90% as the anode material of lithium-ion batteries.
