Abstract. The objective of this study was to estimate the breeding values (BVs) of lactation persistency, the test day of milk yield, the somatic cell score, reproductive traits (calving interval, days open), longevity in Slovak Holstein dairy cattle. BVs were used for the detection of relationships among the persistency of lactation and other selected traits. Data for the estimation of BVs of milk production and somatic cell score were collected from 855 240 cows. BVs for reproductive traits were estimated for 352 712 cows and for longevity for 528 362 cows. The highest correlations were confirmed between the BV of persistency and the BV of test day milk yield at 100, 200, and 305 days (−0.88, −0.65, and −0.61). Correlations between the BV of lactation persistency and the BV of somatic cell score at day 305 or the BV of somatic cell score persistency were favorable: −0.05 and −0.12, respectively. The relationship between the BV of persistency and the BV of the calving interval or the BV of days open was 0.11 and 0.10 respectively. The selection for the persistency of lactation may not improve longevity because there is no relation between the BV of persistency and the BV of longevity (rg = 0.06).

In spite of the impressive advancements observed on both management and genetic factors, udder health still represents one of most demanding objectives to be attained in the dairy cattle industry. Udder morphology and especially teat condition might represent the first physical barrier to pathogens’ access. The objectives of this study were to investigate the genetic component of teat condition and to elucidate its relationship with both milk yield and somatic cell scores in dairy cattle. Moreover, the effect of selection for both milk yield and somatic cell scores on teat condition was also investigated. A multivariate analysis was conducted on 10,776 teat score records and 30,160 production records from 2469 Italian Holstein cows. Three teat scoring traits were defined and included in the analysis. Heritability estimates for the teat score traits were moderate to low, ranging from 0.084 to 0.238. When teat score was based on a four-classes ordinal scoring, its genetic correlation with milk yields and somatic cell score were 0.862 and 0.439, respectively. The scale used to classify teat-end score has an impact on the magnitude of the estimates. Genetic correlations suggest that selection for milk yield could deteriorate teat health, unless more emphasis is given to somatic cell scores. Considering that both at national and international level, the current selection objectives are giving more emphasis to health traits, a further genetic deterioration in teat condition is not expected.

Background: Somatic cell score is an important parameter to predict milk quality and health of cows. However, in countries like Brazil, this trait is still not selected on a large scale, and no genetic parameters are reported in the literature. Objective: To estimate the variance components and genetic parameters for somatic cell score, milk yield, fat yield, protein yield, fat percentage, and protein percentage in Holstein cows. Methods: Records from 56,718 animals were used to estimate variance components, heritability, and genetic correlations using a multi-trait animal model by the REML method. Results: The heritability estimates were 0.19 for somatic cell score, 0.22 for milk yield, 0.26 for fat yield, 0.18 for protein yield, 0.61 for fat percentage, and 0.65 for protein percentage. The estimates of genetic correlations among analyzed traits ranged from -0.50 to 0.82. Conclusion: The low heritability observed for somatic cell score indicates that selection for this trait should result in benefits related to animal health and milk quality, but only in the long term. The low correlation between productive traits and somatic cell score indicates that inclusion of somatic cell score in animal breeding programs does not interfere negatively with the genetic selection for milk yield or solids.Keywords: Holstein; genetic correlation; genetic parameters; heritability; mastitis; milk quality; milk yield; multi-trait model; somatic cell score; variance components.  Resumen Antecedentes: El conteo de células somáticas es un parámetro importante para predecir la calidad de la leche y la salud de las vacas. As a result of the studies, the relationship of reproductive traits with adaptability was revealed, which were characterized by low heritability and were subject to inbred depression. Selection rates increased from generation to generation by an average of 13.8 %, but did not always lead to changes in disease rates. The correlation coefficient between milk yield of cows during the first 305 days of lactation and service period was -0,227± 0,013 (F test of 5.2), the coefficient of the linear regression of service period on milk yield for 305 days of first lactation – 0,45±0,033. A positive correlation (r =+52±0,012) was revealed between the milk yield of full-aged cows during 305 days of lactation and the number of cows eliminated due to infertility. Genetic and environmental factors together exceeded the threshold of adaptability, so the body's ability to resist became weakened. The correlation coefficient for daughter-mother for the duration of the disease +0,33±0,022, age of animals at the beginning of the disease – +0,36±0,021. Coefficients of repeatability gynecological diseases in cows from the first to the second lactation + 0,807, from the second to the third + 0,892, from the first to the third – + 0,454. From the data obtained, it follows that heritability depends on factors, each of which has a relatively small impact on variability and is determined by many genes. Features with a threshold deviation are not related to the efficiency of selection by productivity. Gynecological pathologies in offspring arise under the influence of different alleles systems.


Using of ethological indicators in cattle breeding makes it possible to realize the productive capacity of cows, since many acts of behavior are characterized by high inheritance. The aim of the work is to monitor the behavioral acts of the Simmental cattle of domestic and German breeding of Mummovskoe breeding farm of Atkarsky district of Saratov region in the stall and pasture periods of keeping, to estab-lish the relationship of food activity with milk yield. Two groups of first-calving cows were formed with 5 heads each: control - domestic selection and experimental - German breeding. Behavioral acts of exper-imental animals were evaluated at 2-3 and 5-6 months of the first and third lactations according to V.I.Velikzhanin method by timing the elementary ethological acts for 16 hours using the alphabet of be-havioral symptoms. Differences in the duration of feed intake were established, which in the stowing pe-riod of the content amounted to an average of 35 minutes. (P> 0.95) in favor of Simmentals of German breeding, in pasture - 15 min. With both methods of maintaining the chewing gum, the Simmentals of German breeding spent 36-44 minutes more than the domestic peers (P> 0.95). Despite the fact that dur-ing the stabling period of the first-caliber content of different breeding, the duration of comfort reactions was practically the same, 56-61 minutes, in the pasture, this act of behavior was required more for the first-class foreign selection (for 35 min, P> 0.999), which is associated with a more acute reaction of this group of animals to high air temperature, attacks of the nemesis, etc. Consequently, in the stall period of keeping, the Simmentals of German breeding displayed the greatest productivity with longer food reac-tions, pasture period - differences in milk yield and duration of feed consumption were relatively leveled, which is due to better adaptation of domestic Simmentals to breeding conditions.

The objective was to utilize data from modern US dairy cattle to determine the effect of days dry on fat and protein yield, fat and protein percentages, days open, and somatic cell score in the subsequent lactation. Field data collected through the dairy herd improvement association from January 1997 to December 2003 and extracted from the Animal Improvement Programs Laboratory national database were used for analysis. Actual lactation records calculated from test-day yields using the test-interval method were used in this study. The model for analyses included herd-year of calving, year-state-month of calving, previous lactation record, age at calving, and days dry as a categorical variable. Fat and protein yield was maximized in the subsequent lactation with a 60-d dry period. Dry periods of 20 d or less resulted in substantial losses in fat and protein yield in the subsequent lactation. In contrast to yields, a short dry period was beneficial for fat and protein percentages. Short dry periods also resulted in fewer days open in the subsequent lactation; however, this was entirely due to the lower milk yield associated with shortened dry period. When adjusted for milk yield, short dry periods actually resulted in poorer fertility in the subsequent lactation. Long days dry improved somatic cell score in the subsequent lactation. Herds with mastitis problems should be cautious in shortening days dry because short dry periods led to higher cell scores in the subsequent lactation compared with 60-d dry.

The objective of this study was to estimate lactation curve parameters with Dijkstra mechanistic model and to evaluate genetic and phenotypic relationships between the parameters and the average somatic cell count in primiparous cows. The finding indicated that heritability estimates for partial milk yield (PMY1, PMY2 and PMY3), total 305-day milk yield (TMY305), decay parameter (λ2), age at first calving (AFC) and peak yield (PY) were moderate while the heritability of persistency (PS%), average somatic cell score (AVGSCS), time to peak yield (TP), initial milk production (λ0), specific rate of cell proliferation at parturition (λ1), and specific rate of cell death (λ3) were quite low. Genetic correlations between both AFC and PS% traits with average somatic cell scores was negative (-0.047 and -0.060) but low positive genetic correlation were between partial milk yields (PMY1 and PMY3) while negative genetic correlation (-0.06) was obtained between TMY305 and AVGSCS. Differences between TMY305 of cows with less than 100000 cells mL-1 and cows with >1,500,000 cells mL-1 was approximately 708 Kg and is equivalent to 8% loss of milk yield/cow during lactation period and also loss of persistency (11.1 %( was shown for the extreme classes of SCC in this study.
