Abstract. The atmospheric science community demands for autonomous and quality-assured vertically resolved measurements of aerosol and cloud properties. For this purpose, a portable lidar called Polly was developed at TROPOS in 2003. The lidar system was continuously improved with gained experience from EARLINET, worldwide field campaigns and institute collaborations within the last 10 years. Here we present recent changes of the setup of our portable multiwavelength Raman and polarization lidar PollyXT and the improved capabilities of the system by means of a case study. Our latest developed system includes an additional near-range receiver unit for Raman measurements of the backscatter and extinction coefficient down to 120 m above ground, a water-vapor channel, and channels for simultaneous measurements of the particle linear depolarization at 355 and 532 nm. Quality improvements were achieved by following consequently the EARLINET guidelines and own developments. A modified ship radar ensures measurements in agreement with air-traffic safety regulations and allows 24/7 monitoring of the atmospheric state with PollyXT.

Abstract. The summertime Arctic lower troposphere is a relatively pristine background aerosol environment dominated by nucleation and Aitken mode particles. Understanding the mechanisms that control the formation and growth of aerosol is crucial for our ability to predict cloud properties and therefore radiative balance and climate. We present an analysis of an aerosol growth event observed in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago during summer as part of the NETCARE project. Under stable and clean atmospheric conditions, with low inversion heights, carbon monoxide less than 80 ppbv, and black carbon less than 5 ng m−3, we observe growth of small particles,  <  20 nm in diameter, into sizes above 50 nm. Aerosol growth was correlated with the presence of organic species, trimethylamine, and methanesulfonic acid (MSA) in particles ∼ 80 nm and larger, where the organics are similar to those previously observed in marine settings. MSA-to-sulfate ratios as high as 0.15 were observed during aerosol growth, suggesting an important marine influence. The organic-rich aerosol contributes significantly to particles active as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN, supersaturation  =  0.6 %), which are elevated in concentration during aerosol growth above background levels of ∼ 100 to ∼ 220 cm−3. Results from this case study highlight the potential importance of secondary organic aerosol formation and its role in growing nucleation mode aerosol into CCN-active sizes in this remote marine environment.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate to what extent quality function deployment (QFD) can be used in quality improvement rather than design activities. Design/methodology/approach A framework was developed for implementation of QFD as a quality improvement tool. A case study approach is used to test this framework, and quality issues were analyzed using the framework in a ceramic tile manufacturing company. Findings The results showed considerable improvements in the critical quality characteristics identified and sales rates, demonstrating the potential of QFD to be used in assessing and prioritizing areas of improvement, and converting them into measurable process or product requirements. Research limitations/implications One case study was completed. More studies would be beneficial to support current findings. Practical implications This framework provides structured approach and guidelines for practitioners in adapting QFD for quality improvements in existing products or processes. Originality/value This study proposes a new framework to use QFD in quality improvement activities, expanding its application areas. Moreover, the results of the literature study performed provide a valuable collection of practical QFD implementation examples.

An intensive measurement campaign was performed during September 2014 in southern Romania in two different locations: Magurele, Ilfov County and Turceni, Gorj County. This paper presents one case study with analysis of the aerosol properties from in-situ, passive remote sensing and active remote sensing measurements. A Multiwavelength Raman Lidar (RALI) provided one hour averaged vertical profiles of extinction and backscatter from the 532 nm and 1064 nm channels in Magurele. The UV scanning Lidar (MILI) provided one hour averaged backscattered and extinction vertical profiles for Turceni. Planetary Boundary Layer Height (PBLH) was calculated using the altitude of the maximum negative gradient of the range corrected signal. Mass concentrations for different aerosol species (organics, nitrate, sulphate, ammonium and chloride) were obtained from in-situ measurements using Aerosol Mass Spectrometer located in M�gurele and Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ACSM) located in Turceni.

Vehicle-pedestrian conflict is a commonly unsafe event that occurs in both urban and rural areas, especially in developing countries. It is still an open research topic, mostly in traffic safety and urban planning, which is utilised for evaluating the behaviours of vehicles and pedestrians at a non-signalised marked walkway. Three stations were selected based on higher daily activities to calculate the regularity of pedestrian movement. A manual calculation method was applied, and the calculation was done only during the daytime. Three different teams were formed to obtain the measurements at the three different sampling points simultaneously. A present study on preliminary vehicle-pedestrian conflict reveals the frequency of pedestrians in a concentrated area and its Level of Service (LOS) in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Serdang. The findings show that rush hour occurs during the mid-day in weekday, when students have finished their classes and adults have gone out for other businesses.

Road traffic, as a part of the entire transport system, is an important factor of social growth and development, which is necessary to create conditions for its safe operation, bearing in mind that all the benefits of this phenomenon are still paying a high price of unnecessary human suffering. In a contemporary society, there is a large number of institutions that play a role in the functioning of the transport system, but they stand out as the holders of activities and measures to improve traffic safety. Given that the number of accidents in recent years has reached a worrying level, in the interest of society is to reduce the number of accidents, or to increase traffic safety, because the consequences that the society is submitting in the form of human casualties and material damage are large. The model for the absolute traffic safety does not exist, but a permanent analytical monitoring of the status of road safety, control and regulation of traffic and taking measures to eliminate the risk factors can greatly increase the level of traffic safety.

Online institutions continue to seek quality guidelines related to effective course development and quality improvements. The struggle lies in getting support from institutional leaders to implement new ideas. While perseverance and serendipity always play a part when these efforts are successful, a few of Capella’s strategies were vital to their implementation of systematic course quality: 1. Selecting a course quality assurance partner that was a good fit, 2. Piloting the program for fit and to build experienced supporters, 3. Forming a core group that was accountable for the implementation, 4. Building a steering committee of senior leaders from across the institution, 5. Nurturing a community of practice with many avenues for genuine participation, and 6. Establishing and being held accountable for measurable goals. This case study describes Capella University’s implementation of a course quality system through a community of practice (CoP) model that facilitated genuine buy-in rather than top-down implementation.
