<p>This year vEGU21 has flexible networking tools available to conveners and attendees, allowing people to engage and socialise with, and learn from one another in almost any way they wish. Networking is facilitated by three key tools: the Networker community-building platform, the conference Handshake tool, and the Pop-Up Scheduler.</p> <p>This year the Networker will help attendees find, meet, and talk with one another and forge lasting connections. Build your profile by adding in your expertise, social media, contact information and other details; you can even add stickers to quickly showcase your Division, whether you are an Early Career Scientist, and your pronouns amongst other choices! During the Assembly you can find other members with similar interests on the Networker, share your profiles with people you meet at the conference, or start group text chats with other members in your network. The Networker isn’t just for the Assembly either: after building your network at the Assembly members will be able to keep connected and meet others all year-round!</p> <p>One of the quickest ways to build your network during the Assembly is by using the conference networking tool: Handshake. Handshake lets you quickly initiate contact with other attendees in your virtual conference room and share your networker profile or start a text chat.</p> <p>If you want to run your own event then the Assembly’s Pop-Up Scheduler allows you to set up networking opportunities of any kind, from small events focusing on a particular scientific topic to spaces for you to build a community. Perhaps you’ve been inspired by member-led events like the Games Night or Rhyme Your Research and want to explore more ways to get involved in geoscience communication! The Pop-Up Scheduler allows you to do all this and more: simply choose a date, time, and provide a link to a platform of your choice. Once submitted it will be added to the conference programme. You can link to any platform you like: the scheduler is designed to be flexible and meet the needs of the membership, so members should feel free to organise events using platforms from Animal Crossing to Zoom! Consultants and more senior co-resident physicians at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) would call him “Caloy.” Hardly would I hear anybody (including our ENT department secretary) address him as Dr. Reyes. This was not because he was not a respected faculty member. Rather, he was everybody’s friend and he probably preferred to be addressed by his nickname. Dr. Carlos P. Reyes was a tall, friendly guy, easily recognizable while walking through the short PGH corridor stretching from the old ENT Ward (Ward 3) to the old ENT operating room (OR) called Floor 15, later designated as the PGH Nursing Office. He would almost always be holding either an expensive photography camera, electronic gadget, ENT OR instrument, or car magazines – suggesting his varied interests aside from having good knowledge of Otolaryngology, particularly Otology. He would usually stop and chat with an acquaintance about his new medical or non-medical interests. I first met Dr. Caloy when I was the first year resident assigned to the Otology section. He would call me “Ging” while presenting the ear patients at the outpatient department (OPD) Ear Clinic, only to learn later that he would address all unfamiliar persons by that name. He was kind, helpful and very understanding. Equipped with ample information in Otology he gathered from postgraduate studies abroad, he would selflessly share these with the residents in order to sharpen our diagnostic acumen. He would instruct us to rely on concise yet complete clinical examination, involving audiologic evaluation tools and meager radiologic information in considering differential diagnoses. He was quite willing to assist us in our learning processes, particularly on how to distinguish middle ear from inner ear disorders, and cochlear versus retrocochlear diseases. Since we did not have any audiologist at that time, he admonished us to carry out the needed audiometric evaluations on our ear patients ourselves in order to learn both the techniques of the procedures and their limitations. Hence, after the OPD clinic we would not only perform routine pure tone and speech audiometric tests but also special examinations like the Bekesy test, short increment sensitivity index (SISI) test, alternate binaural loudness balance (ABLB) test and the test for tone decay. We would then discuss the test results during our next ear clinic and we would listen and be amazed at how Dr. Caloy would integrate the information and arrive at the complex diagnosis. Dr. Caloy was our mentor at the time when refinements in tympanoplasty and mastoidectomy aroused the excitement and imagination of budding otologists worldwide. Whereas canal down mastoidectomy was the usual norm to safely remove common mastoid pathology like cholesteatoma, Dr. Caloy introduced the concept of intact canal wall mastoidectomy that avoids or mitigates recurrent postoperative cleaning of the mastoid bone. The period was also the dawn of neuro-otology when Dr. William House popularized the transmastoid approach for acoustic neuroma and the endolymphatic mastoid shunt as treatment for Meniere’s disease. In order to teach us the anatomical and surgical principles of performing these procedures, Dr. Caloy set up the first temporal bone dissection laboratory in the country at the mezzanine above the ENT conference room. He would offer the course to all ENT residents-in-training and consultants nationwide. He practically revolutionized the method of otologic surgery by requiring ENT surgeons to practice doing ear surgery in the temporal bone dissection lab prior to performing ear surgeries in the operating room. In addition, he advocated the use of the operating microscope and dental drills in place of the old bone gouges, chisels and bone ronguers. His ideas were later adopted by other ENT training institutions as we see today. The requirement that every ENT resident must undergo temporal bone dissection in the course of his training obviously stemmed from the efforts of Dr. Caloy. Many senior ENT consultants who are still with us today were former students of Dr. Caloy in his temporal bone lab Unfortunately, before finishing my residency training, Dr Caloy expeditiously left the PGH ENT department for unknown reasons. He then set up his private clinic in Quezon City and later joined the ENT department of University of Santo Tomas. Reflecting on the significant yet probably unknown achievements of Dr. Caloy toward the advancement of otology and neuro-otology in our country, I realize how blessed I was to be one of his students during that brief period when he was still with us at UP-PGH. With our profound gratitude Sir, we will always remember you.

This chapter reviews contemporary research on virtual collaboration. In particular, we focus on synchronous communication and collaboration processes in virtual conferencing environments. In a virtual conference, interactants are geographically distant but their avatars (virtual representations) appear in the same virtual conference room. Two types of virtual collaboration are examined. First, we review new findings on research in immersive virtual conferencing. Next, we review recent findings on social interaction in non-immersive virtual conferencing. Specifically, we examine the impact of social interaction on these communication technologies. Finally, we conclude with speculation about the future trends in virtual collaboration.

Purpose The Participatory Autism Research Collective (PARC) was initially set up with the purpose of bringing autistic people, including scholars and activists (but not exclusively), together with early career researchers and practitioners who work with autistic people, with the aim being to build a community where those who wished to see more significant involvement of autistic people in autism research could share knowledge and expertise. This paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach This paper explores the development of the PARC network, reflecting upon its activities and ethos within current higher education practices and structures. Findings In supporting autistic individuals in their attempts to establish themselves within academic systems that may not always be considerate or accommodating, the existence of PARC creates a structure with which autistic people can influence social change. PARC serves as a network of support, strengthening the presence of autistic scholars in academia. It also provides a structure through which autistic people are able to demonstrate helpful practices with which to engage more broadly. Originality/value The PARC network is the first autistic-led venture of its kind in the UK to have a sustained impact. PARC is growing to become an important element in the field of autism studies both by supporting emerging autistic academics and by promoting ethical and participatory research methods and practices.

Attracting and retaining women in health research is crucial as it will maximize creativity and innovation as well as increase gender competency and expertise in the field. To help address the gender gap in the research for health field in Cameroon, some women research scientists formed the Higher Institute for Growth in HEalth Research for Women (HIGHER Women) consortium to support and encourage the growth of women research scientists through a training institute with a Mentor–Protégé Program (MPP). The consortium set up a MPP aiming at providing professional guidance to facilitate protégés' growth and emergence in health research. The consortium has conducted two workshops aiming at increasing the early-career women's skills needed to launch their career and focusing on proposal writing with the aim of producing a fundable project. Since 2015, the consortium has brought together approximately 100 women comprising of 80 protégés. The most significant outcome is in the protégés' feedback from their annual evaluations. The protégés are now more likely to submit abstracts and attend international conferences. Some grants have been obtained as a result of the working relationship with mentors. The HIGHER women consortium works to develop a pipeline of women leaders in health research by fostering growth and leadership culture through their MPP.

Abstract As the global health crisis unfolded, many academic conferences moved online in 2020. This move has been hailed as a positive step towards inclusivity in its attenuation of economic, physical, and legal barriers and effectively enabled many individuals from groups that have traditionally been underrepresented to join and participate. A number of studies have outlined how moving online made it possible to gather a more global community and has increased opportunities for individuals with various constraints, e.g., caregiving responsibilities. Yet, the mere existence of online conferences is no guarantee that everyone can attend and participate meaningfully. In fact, many elements of an online conference are still significant barriers to truly diverse participation: the tools used can be inaccessible for some individuals; the scheduling choices can favour some geographical locations; the set-up of the conference can provide more visibility to well-established researchers and reduce opportunities for early-career researchers. While acknowledging the benefits of an online setting, especially for individuals who have traditionally been underrepresented or excluded, we recognize that fostering social justice requires inclusivity to actively be centered in every aspect of online conference design. Here, we draw from the literature and from our own experiences to identify practices that purposefully encourage a diverse community to attend, participate in, and lead online conferences. Reflecting on how to design more inclusive online events is especially important as multiple scientific organizations have announced that they will continue offering an online version of their event when in-person conferences can resume.

Introduction: The studies recommend replacement or removal of stent at least by 3-6 months after ERCP in order to avoid complications such as occlusion or migration of stent or cholangitis. While it cannot be denied that complications may occur following routine stenting too, presence of a stent in the biliary tree left behind for a long duration is especially fraught with danger since, the stent though crucial in patient management, is undoubtedly a foreign body. Method and material: Plastic stenting through ERCP for CBD obstruction was performed in 288 patients. Patients were divided into 3 groups on basis of duration of presentation from their respective date of ERCP Result: 50 out of 288 patients did not provide contact information at time of registration for ERCP. 28 out of 50 patients who did not provide contact details at time of registration presented >6 months after ERCP. 260 patients presented for stent removal within 6 months of stenting of which 05 patients (1.9%) developed stentolith. 28 patients presented > 6 months after stent placement of which 26 (92.8%) developed stentolith. Conclusion: All patients with biliary stent must be informed about the importance of its removal on time and complications of long term endoprosthesis in situ. ‘Stent Registry System’ should be set up under direct supervision of the surgeon is recommended. Stentolith referred to surgeon are usually impacted or too large to be removed endoscopically mandating open choledocholithotomy.

<p>The International Lithosphere Program (ILP) was established in 1980 as the Inter-Union Commission on the Lithosphere (ICL) by the International Council for Science (ICSU), following a request from the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) and the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). In 2005 ICSU transferred its sponsorship to IUGG and IUGS.</p><p>The ILP focusses on the nature, dynamics, origin, and evolution of the lithosphere, with special attention to the continents and their margins. Targeting these goals through international and interdisciplinary collaboration, ILP established several task forces and coordinating committees to pursue specific research objectives. Topics always follow one of the four ILP themes: global change, contemporary dynamics and deep processes, continental lithosphere, and ocean lithosphere. ILP’s funding is limited to five year periods and just understood as seed money.</p><p>In the last four decades ILP was involved in the composition and set up of a number of worldwide leading light house projects: The GSHAP (Global Seismic Hazard Map), the ICDP (International Continental Drilling Project), the WSM (World Stress Map Project), the TOPO-Europe project and its follow up initiatives TOPO-Asia, TOPO Iberia – just to name a few. Currently ILP supports new initiatives on digitalization.</p><p>With its Flinn-Hart Award (until 2007 Hart Award), honouring outstanding young scientists for contributions in the field of solid Earth sciences, ILP motivated and promoted a generation of early career scientists. The new Evgueni Burov Medal from ILP, established in 2018, pays tribute to an outstanding researcher in solid Earth sciences and recognizes pioneering contributions by mid-career scientists.</p>
