Abstract. The operational system known as MORECS which provides estimates of evaporation, soil moisture deficit and effective precipitation under British climatic conditions has been revised as version 2.0. An overview of the new system is described with emphasis on the new additions. The major changes from the older version (Thomson, Barrie and Ayles, 1981) include the introduction of the crop oil-seed rape, a revised treatment of soils and available water capacity and a land use data base which is representative of the 1990s.

Water availability in semiarid regions is endangered, which is not only due to changing climate conditions, but also to anthropogenic land use changes. The present study analyzed the annual and monthly water balance (WBc) and the soil moisture deficit (Ds) for different vegetation units under semiarid conditions in the Andes of southern Ecuador, based on limited meteorological station data and field measurements (soil samples). To calculate crop evapotranspiration (ETc) the Blaney–Criddle method was applied, and the specific crop factor (Kc) included, because only temperature (T) and precipitation (P) data were available. By means of the soil samples the water retention capacity (RC) of the different soil types present in the study area were estimated, which, in combination with WBc, provided reliable results respective to water surpluses or deficits for the different vegetation units. The results indicated highest Ds for cultivated areas, particularly for corn and sugarcane plantations, where annual deficits up to −1377.5 mm ha−1 and monthly deficits up to −181.1 mm ha−1 were calculated. Natural vegetation cover (scrubland, forest and paramo), especially at higher elevations, did not show any deficit throughout the year (annual surpluses up to 1279.6 mm ha−1; monthly surpluses up to 280.1 mm ha−1). Hence, it could be concluded that the prevailing climate conditions in semiarid regions cannot provide the necessary water for agricultural practices, for which reason irrigation is required. The necessary water can be supplied by areas coved by natural vegetation, but these areas are endangered due to population growth and the associated land use changes.

In this study soil hydro-physical properties such as soil texture, available water capacity, and organic carbon, along with existing land use and topography of a representative watershed of eastern India (Kadalipal watershed, 20.80–20.86°N and 85.54–86.50°E, Dhenkanal district, Orissa), were spatially mapped after collecting data from different sources (ground-truthing, profile survey, remote sensing satellite imagery). Since availability of water is confined to the south-west monsoon period (rainy season, June–September), eastern India is mainly mono-cropped, dominated by rice but second crops can be planned based on the soil hydro-physical properties, mainly water retention and available water of the soil profile utilising residual soil moisture. Keeping the existing land use as a base and considering the potential and prospects of soil hydro-physical properties in different topographies, in this investigation, an alternative land-use plan was developed in different parts of the watershed and tested in its rainfed rice area. Since direct measurement of available water capacity or soil water constants over a large area is time-consuming, pedo-transfer functions were also developed to predict soil water constants using easily measured parameters (e.g. cation exchange capacity, organic carbon, oven-dry bulk density, soil texture, calcium carbonate, etc.) of arable land of the watershed. Results of implementation revealed that the new cropping system was practical for increasing production, productivity, profitability, and sustainability of the rainfed rice area of the eastern India.

The study of climatic conditions of Paranavaí region is necessary due to its importance in the national agricultural scenario. The study aimed to calculate the climatological water balance (CWB) as well as performing the climate classification by the method of Thornthwaite e Mather for the municipality of Paranavaí, Paraná. Data from a historical series from 1975 to 2018 were used. For the calculation of the CWB was adopted the value of 100 mm for the available water capacity (AWC). The municipality studied presentes na annual average of 1523,8 mm precipitation and 1090,62 evapotranspiration. The municipality presented a trend climate o fone month of water deficiency (August) and eleven months of water excess (Setember to July). Regarding climate classification, was found C1dA’a’ climate, characterized as a mesothermic climate, with little or no water deficiency.

This paper aims to present factual information and to suggest possible solutions regarding some of the recent questions which have arisen regarding the regulation of traditional Chinese medicine in Hungary. According to current legislation “traditional Chinese doctors”, who are the most highly trained professionals in this field, are not allowed to practice Chinese medicine and acupuncture in Hungary. This situation cannot be explained by their educational background, as they receive thorough training in both Chinese medicine and modern medical sciences. Furthermore, this legislation is not supported by any EU standard: Traditional Chinese medicine professionals can practice Chinese medicine and acupuncture in a number of European countries within a legal and regulated framework. Different kinds of healthcare professionals may practice Chinese medicine and acupuncture in the UK – this could be a good example for Hungarian regulation. The five-year bachelor level traditional Chinese medicine training at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Semmelweis University and the increasing number of locally trained traditional Chinese medicine professionals could be a good basis for laying the groundwork of the new system. The land use has undergone some changes in the last 30 years, by reducing the areas with arable land, converting multi-annual plantations into other categories of land, etc. According to the current mode of land use, the Northern Development Region has a pronounced agricultural profile - 80.3% of the total area represents agricultural land. The spatial differentiations regarding the morphological and agro-climatic conditions allowed the identification within the region of areas with agro-forestry and agro-pastoral specializations.
