Those who are responsible for continuing to protect democratic principles can benefit from studying, understanding, and adapting to counteract this unheralded spread of data. Developing tactics and strategies to counter the antics of those who propagate disinformation to further their own causes will become necessary to protect the integrity of elections and other national and international interests. This chapter explores and reveals some of the general threats and potential counter measures to keep general populations protected from the negative effects of such campaigns.

As the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic evolved, information about the virus also accumulated. However, accompanied by the quick emergence of factual information was an even greater abundance of false information. For example, by March 2020, videos containing non-factual information on COVID-19 accounted for over one-quarter of the most viewed videos on YouTube — greatly exceeding the popularity of factual videos released by governments and health professionals [1]. The World Health Organization declared this massive flux of misinformation surrounding COVID-19 an “infodemic”, where it is hard to distinguish between factual and non-factual information [2].

PurposeTo elaborate the nature of infotainment as a mediating concept between information and entertainment by analysing how the concept of infotainment is approached in diverse domains such as communication research.Design/methodology/approachConceptual analysis was conducted by focussing on 41 key studies on the topic. First, it was examined how researchers have approached the relationships between informational and entertaining elements of infotainment. Thereafter, attention was directed to the ways in which people make use of infotainment. The conceptual analysis is based on the comparison of the similarities and differences between the characterizations of the above issues.FindingsEarly studies characterized infotainment in terms of soft news which is distinct from hard news offering factual information. Later investigations offer a more nuanced picture by approaching infotainment as phenomenon with diverse dimensions depicting the topics, focus and presentation style. Studies on the use of infotainment offer contradictory evidence of the extent to which infotaining programmes can increase people's interest in social, political and health issues, for example.Research limitations/implicationsAs the study concentrates on the analysis of an individual concept, that is, infotainment, the findings cannot be generalized to concern the ways in which informational and entertaining phenomena are related as a whole.Originality/valueBy elaborating the conceptual nature of infotainment, the study contributes to information behaviour research by refining the picture of the relationships between information and entertainment.

The phenomenon of post-truth poses a problem for the public policy-oriented sciences, including policy analysis. Along with “fake news,” the post-truth denial of facts constitutes a major concern for numerous policy fields. Whereas a standard response is to call for more and better factual information, this Element shows that the effort to understand this phenomenon has to go beyond the emphasis on facts to include an understanding of the social meanings that get attached to facts in the political world of public policy. The challenge is thus seen to be as much about a politics of meaning as it is about epistemology. The analysis here supplements the examination of facts with an interpretive policy-analytic approach to gain a fuller understanding of post-truth. The importance of the interpretive perspective is illustrated by examining the policy arguments that have shaped policy controversies related to climate change and coronavirus denial.

This article dwells on the construction of active learning discourse. The material is comprised of six videos in English, which demonstrate how the active learning format can be applied to a university lecture. These videos were chosen due to their popularity on YouTube and because they present fragments of real university classes accompanied by lecturers’ explanations. The discourse analysis applied found a correlation between lecturers’ linguistic choices and their communicative aim. In addition, the methods of systematization and classification were used. Prior to the analysis, all the videos were transcribed. As a result of the research, typical features of active learning discourse were identified and communicative means of its construction were determined. It was established that this type of discourse can be described as academic and institutional. Frequent use of means of dialogicity and high level of emotionality are among its distinctive features. The study found that when constructing the discourse of active learning, lecturers use factual information, questions, direct address to the audience, repetitions, as well as discourse markers of encouragement and solidarity. As this type of discourse is aimed at motivating students to actively participate in the process of learning, а conclusion is made that active learning discourse can also be described as motivational.

Information about voice care is abundant, provided by a variety of sources, including books, the internet, and word of mouth. Some information may not be factual, which, if followed, may affect the well-being of a singer’s voice. This article reports on a survey of 386 singers, who responded to 50 statements about voice health practices, stating whether they had heard the statement, and whether they agreed/believed, were unsure, or disagreed/disbelieved. The statements were grouped by their factual nature: Generally Accepted Belief, Previously Accepted Belief, Misconception Likely Benign, and Misconception Potentially Consequential. Singers were divided into Performance Statuses (Professional, Semi-Professional, Amateur) and Generation (Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials). Statistical analysis was performed to compare the responses to the various kinds of statements by Performance Status and by Generation. Amateurs were significantly different from Professionals on the Generally Accepted Belief statements, and Millennials were different from some or all of the other generations on the other three kinds of statements. The authors examined the possible reasons for these differences, providing a cautionary tale regarding the information and misinformation available to singers. Suggestions are/were provided for how teachers can optimize the proliferation of factual information on voice care.

One of those German scholars who tried to combine the theological with the historical-critical approach to the Scriptures studies was Hans-Joachim Kraus (1918-2000). Kraus’s most famous work is a three-volume commentary on the Psalter. Using the exegesis of Psalms 109 and 131 as an example, the author of this article shows how Kraus balanced between theology and historical criticism. For this, an analysis of his premises of the faith in the living God is carried out. I try to demonstrate Kraus’s methodology in reconstructing the historical cultic environment in which the biblical poems were formed. As my study shows, Kraus actively uses non-biblical sources, conducts theological analysis of manuscripts, showing what role the psalms could play in the veneration of Zion and Jerusalem king. Kraus avoids the use of typology and allegory and is cautious about fulfilling Old Testament prophecy in the New Testament. As a scientist, he argues that Scripture contains factual information that can be believed. His strictly academic and at the same time Christian-reverent approach to Bible study, in my opinion, can serve as an answer to the question: how can faith be combined with scientific investigation of the Bible.
