Abstract. Founded by Romans, Vimercate had an important geographical position in Lombardy. Layers of history are visible throughout the town, yet there is the inconsistency of historical data and neglect of the historical centre in the past decades. Only recently researchers and professors from Politecnico di Milano pointed out the importance of studying layers of history in the built environment. In the past years, Vimercate was used as an example for students from masters and bachelor courses in preservation studios. This is where the idea for the master’s thesis was developed which focuses on the collection, digitalisation and investigation of primary historical cartography and then other historical documents. Historical cartography can offer extensive knowledge about the past of this town and it is one of the main sources of information. For the creation of the project was selected free and open-source software QGIS where the selected historical maps were vectorised, compared and investigated. A new understanding of the development of the city was studied and some discoveries appeared. Effective application of the thesis project started in the courses of Architectural preservation studio at Politecnico di Milano. This was followed by the interest of citizens in the project who were actively participated in the creation of the same. Other stakeholders showed interest in involving in future developments. The thesis found its application in didactic activities of students and pupils.

Tripoli town plan (1930-1936). The consciousness of the pastThe paper recalls the well known urban facts of Tripoli during the Italian colonialism to eventually deepen the theme of the preservation of the past and not only of the Roman one, as well of the city walls. The town plan has been analyzed not only as it has been approved but also as it has been argued, not only through the drawings but also by the debate. A few letters between the professionals involved (especially Alberto Alpago Novello) and some authoritative exponents of the contemporary architecture culture and criticism (like, Gustavo Giovannoni) have assured an original source to underlines the critical background and to reveal a purpose of touristic and commercial development.

This paper shares my journey from rigid, self-doubting, and strict to fluid, confident, freedom of thinking as I created, moved, thought, and philosophized my way through an arts-based and community-based research course. In that course, I created a photography piece, “Bluff City Merger.” Through the creation of this project my view of who I was as a researcher and as a person began to shift and an unmasking began to take place by the end of this project. Bluff City Merger created a space that would allow for the individual to construct their own meaning and understanding of all that took place in Memphis, Tennessee (US). The purpose of this piece was to spark conversation and conceptualization surrounding the bussing controversy of the early 70’s in the city of Memphis while also contemplating the current state of the school system by merging photographs from the past with those from the present.

The paper evaluates landscape development, land-use changes, and transport infrastructure variations in the city of Martin and the town of Vrútky, Slovakia, over the past 70 years. It focuses on analyses of the landscape structures characterizing the study area in several time periods (1949, 1970, 1993, 2003); the past conditions are then compared with the relevant current structure (2018). Special attention is paid to the evolution of the landscape elements forming the transport infrastructure. The development and progressive changes in traffic intensities are presented in view of the resulting impact on the formation of the landscape structure. The research data confirm the importance of transport as a force determining landscape changes, and they indicate that while railroad accessibility embodied a crucial factor up to the 1970s, the more recent decades were characterized by a gradual shift to road transport.

- Major events have played a crucial role in the urban transformations that have taken place in Genoa over the past 15 years, both for the huge investments they require and for the way they have redefined the city's image. Urban transformation, upgrading and maintenance, all of which have affected the historical centre and the waterfront, have contributed decisively to the reversing of the process of physical, economic and social degradation which had been devouring many parts of the city centre. 2004 was the year Genoa became European Capital of Culture and this was a turning point in the endeavour to relaunch and consolidate the role of the city in the tourist and cultural panorama of both Italy and Europe.

The past decade has been marked by a substantial shift in planning for more compact, complete and pedestrian-oriented communities. Amidst this broader evolution, greater emphasis is being increasingly placed on creating healthy and ‘complete communities’, particularly through the provision of enhanced ‘active transportation’ networks. The overall purpose of this Major Research Paper (MRP) will be to recommend Official Plan policies to more effectively support the role of ‘active transportation’ in creating more ‘complete communities’ in the Town of Innisfil, a rapidly growing municipality located approximately one hour north of the City of Toronto. The underlying argument of this MRP is that enhanced active transportation networks can play an integral role in building more sustainable, healthy and ‘complete’ communities within the Town of Innisfil, because of the substantial environmental, economic, and social benefits that they can provide. Furthermore, planning policies must encompass all elements of planning, designing, implementing and monitoring in order to support the achievement of enhanced active transportation networks.

The article is devoted to the pre-regular period of evolution of the planning structure of the town of Totma in the period from the second half of the XV to the beginning of the XIX century. Based on the sources, the main prerequisites and factors for the formation of a pre-regular town layout are considered, and the main stages are highlighted. The emergence and development of the city’s religious centers and the features of the pre-regional planting structure in accordance with the gradual formation of the city’s territory have been analyzed. The characteristic features of the architecture of the church complexes of the city and the creation of a panorama at diff erent stages of the existence of the city of Totma have been studied. The panoramas of the city from the river, the staging of the city’s temples on the relief are analyzed.

After the Rose Revolution, a process of transformation of the city begins. Very different public and private architectures from the past arise, while the strategies for the conservation of old Tbilisi are matter of discussion. To understand the factors that determine the creation of new urban spaces we first need to focus on two factors: the process of Institution Building that follows the Rose Revolution and the emergence of a political narrative that combines modernisation and nationalism. The hypothesis is that these two factors create the ground for developing the specific practices of transformation of the city and for the emergence of a new urban form.

The heritage of Yogyakarta is always situated in a dynamic urban environment. Heritage conservation has been challenged by a lack of understanding on the ideological process in the creation of meanings. This paper investigates the creation process of urban space that is currently appreciated as heritage. The paper uses the city of Yogyakarta as the case study because its uniqueness as a mix of traditional and colonial cities. The study uses the concept of meaning production to understand the association between the construction of urban space and ideological meanings. This concept corresponds to the creation of urban objects and the recognition of meanings in the society. This study uses data sourced from a literature study. As the result, the process of meaning production has demonstrated social and political forces in the construction of traditional and colonial buildings. Situation in the past demonstrates urban space as a tool of political hegemony of traditional court and colonialist. A different social milieu in the present day changes the conflicting ideologies into history. Therefore, the urban structure expresses political strategies of relevant authorities in proclaiming hegemony and regulating society. This study provides a basis for investigating the influence of ideologies on the meaning of heritage that corresponds to cultural significant.

The problem of a quantitative assessment of the socio-geographical situation, which is relevant in modern social geography, is considered on the bases changes in the psychological and spatial orientation of population of Ukraine after the start of the Russian aggression. The study was based on the volume of housing construction per capita in various areas of our state. It was revealed that the total volume of housing construction, which they operate when considering the attractiveness of certain regions, rather significantly distorts the riel psychological and spatial advantages of different regions of the country. The cardinal changes in the assessment of the socio-geographical position of a different region of Ukraine over the past 5 years have been established. They consist of the reorientation of all social processes in the Western direction. The approval of the processes of spatial-territorial remoteness from the borders with Russia, occupied by parts of the Donbas and the annexed Crimea as a favourable socio-economic factor is traced. This is our time is becoming more and more apparent with spatial-territorial investment preferences of not only Ukrainian but also foreign investors. In Ukraine, in our time, housing is mostly built-in regional centres on near them. Thus, it is possible to foresee for the future not only a change in the assessment of the socio-geographical position of certain administrative region of the country but also their administrative and economic centres. In this regard, the situation with the irrational rapid movement of the population to the capital and regional centres and the depopulation of the entire region can be changed only with the help of administrative-territorial reform and the creation of 90 palenques instead of 25 administrative regions and 490 administrative districts. Changes in the assessment of the attractiveness of the socio-geographical position are possible and subject to the deepening of neighbouring Belarus from the Russian Federation and the creation of a single state. Then there will be another reassessment of the socio-geographical as individual regions of the country, and many of its administrative and economic centres.

ABSTRACTBetween the Middle East and Eastern Africa, the city of Harar is often considered as the main historical centre of Islam in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa. Until recently, the cultural hegemony of the Muslim elites inhabiting Harar was commonly opposed to the almost pagan behaviours of the Oromo – or ‘Galla’ – farmers and cattle herders living in the wide rural vicinity of the town. The 1995 Constitution provided the different ‘ethnolinguistic nationalities’ of the new Ethiopian federation with the same institutional recognition. However, the institutionalisation of the two Harari and Oromo ‘nationalities’ seems to foster the historical duality between the city-dwellers and their close neighbours. This article proposes another political history of Harar and its ambivalent Oromo partners through the local dynamics of the Muslim city/countryside models. It reveals the both competing and complementary orders that have probably bound together the populations of Harar and its rural hinterland for more than five hundred years.
