Abstract. In recent years, efficient management of urban spatial data has played a major role in improving urban planning projects both in terms of cost and time savings. Since urban planning projects involve various disciplines like city planning and architecture as well as working with different spatial data, one of the main challenges is how to integrate and manage these multimodal data for a proper workflow. Currently, the involved companies are using project management and accounting systems, so called Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems to handle these complex urban projects - that partly handle the same data objects as stored in urban spatial databases but without any spatial reference. Embedded in the application example of an urban redevelopment area, which according to the German Urban Development Promotion Act aims at financially promoting urban districts in need of renewal, project-related spatial and non-spatial data that were previously kept separate are linked and integrated. Therefore, our work presented here bridges the gap between these two types of application systems, the non-spatial accounting system called Finanz Management System (FMS) and the urban spatial databases. FMS manages information related to parcels, buildings, property owners, as well as the legally required payments connected to urban development, while an urban spatial database manages the geodata. We describe the prerequisites, procedures, and software development steps for coupling different types of applications by providing an example of the Enterprise Application Integration System (EAI). Our innovative integration process aims at making information from the spatial database available in FMS and vice versa, and allows updating the corresponding databases. Our work shows the potential of open-source software for cadastral data processing and visualization as well as accounting procedures for urban planning projects.

Open source software is becoming more prevalent in businesses today, and while still a relatively immature offering, open source enterprise resource planning (OS-ERP) systems are becoming more common. However, whether or not an OS-ERP package is the right software for a given organization is a little researched question. Building on the current real options thinking about platform acquisitions, this chapter proposes the five most critical factors to consider when evaluating an OS-ERP package. To adequately do this, a great deal of detail about the current offerings in OS-ERP software is presented, followed by a review of the real options theory and thinking behind using these factors to evaluate OS-ERP options. The international implications of OS-ERP are presented in the “Future Trends” section.

Spatial databases form the foundation for a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI). For this, a spatial database should be methodically developed to accommodate its role in SDI. It is desirable to have an approach to spatial database development that considers maintenance from the early stage of database design and in a flexible way. Moreover, there is a lack of a mechanism to capture topological relations of spatial objects during the design process. This paper presents an approach that integrates maintenance of topological integrity constraints into the whole spatial database development cycle. The approach is based on the concept of Abstract Data Types. A number of topological classes have been identified and modelling primitives developed for them. Topological integrity constraints are embedded into maintenance functions associated with the topological classes. A semi-automatic transformation process has been developed following the principles of Model Driven Architecture to simplify the design process.

This study examines the development of open source software supporting e-commerce (EC) or e-business (EB) capabilities. This entails a case study within a virtual organization engaged in an organizational initiative to develop, deploy, and support free/open source software systems for EC or EB services, like those supporting enterprise resource planning. The objective of this study is to identify and characterize the resource-based software product development capabilities that lie at the center of the initiative, rather than the software itself, or the effectiveness of its operation in a business enterprise. By learning what these resources are, and how they are arrayed into product development capabilities, we can provide the knowledge needed to understand what resources are required to realize the potential of free EC and EB software applications. In addition, the resource-based view draws attention to those resources and capabilities that provide potential competitive advantages and disadvantages to the organization in focus.

Abstract. Indoor mapping is an essential process in several applications such as the visualization of space and its utilization, security and resource planning, emergency planning and location-based alerts and, last but not least, indoor navigation. In this work, a completely free and open-source (FOS) approach to map indoor environments, and to navigate through them, is presented. Our tests were carried out within Sapienza University of Rome public buildings; in detail, Letters and Philosophy faculty and Engineering faculty indoor environments were mapped. To reach this goal, only open source software such as Quantum GIS (QGIS) and open-source platforms like Open Street Map (OSM) and its indoor viewer, Open Level Up (OLU) were adopted. A database of indoor environments of the two faculties, completely compatible with OLU, was created through QGIS. In this way, a public territorial information system of classrooms, offices and laboratories is accessible to everyone who can, hence, add or modify the information, following the principle of crowdsourcing and of Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI). The developed procedure is now standard and its outputs accepted by the OSM community. Hence, the long-term developments of this project are the proposal for the volunteered and cooperative indoor mapping and design of strategic buildings and infrastructures (hospitals, schools, public offices, shopping centers, stations, airports etc.), starting from the available information (indoor layouts) and knowledge acquired through experience of people who normally work inside them and/or visit them frequently. In this context it is possible to state that the development of VGI for internal maps for strategic buildings, infrastructures and denied GNSS environments, not only supports and improves internal and external navigation without interruption, but can also have a significant positive impact on security and emergency management.

The volume and coverage of spatial data has increased dramatically in recent years, with Earth observation programmes producing dozens of GB of data on a daily basis. The term Big Spatial Data is now applied to data sets that impose real challenges to researchers and practitioners alike. The difficulties are partly related to a lack of tools supporting appropriate Coordinate Reference Systems (CRS). As rule, these data are provided in highly irregular geodesic grids, defined along equal intervals of latitude and longitude. Compounding the problem, users of such data end up taking geodesic coordinates in these grids as a Cartesian system, implicitly applying Marinus of Tyre's projection. A first approach towards the compactness of global geo-spatial data is to work in a Cartesian system produced by an equal-area projection. There are a good number to choose from, but those commonly supported by GIS software invariably relate to the sinusoidal or pseudo-cylindrical families, that impose important distortions of shape and distance. The land masses of Antarctica, Alaska, Canada, Greenland and Russia are particularly distorted with such projections. A more effective approach is to store and work with data in modern cartographic projections, in particular those defined with the Platonic and Archimedean solids. In spite of various attempts at open source software supporting these projections, in practice they remain today largely out of reach to GIS practitioners. This communication reviews persisting difficulties in working with worldwide big spatial data, current strategies to address such difficulties, the compromises they impose and the remaining gaps in open source software.

Saat ini proses bisnis yang berjalan di Toko Handphone Nahda Cell belum terkomputerisasi. Semua transaksi masih menggunakan blangko faktur. Laporan Penjualan dan Stok barang masih menggunakan pencatatan secara manual dibuku. Hal ini tentu akan berakibat terhadap pelayanan dan pembukuan yang tidak baik pada toko tersebut. Untuk itu diperlukan solusi agar permasalahan itu dapat diatasi. Salah satunya dengan penerapan sistem informasi menggunakan aplikasi Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP). Aplikasi ERP ini dapat dirancang sendiri dan dapat juga menggunakan aplikasi yang open source. Penerapan ERP pada Toko Nahda Cell menggunakan ERP yang bersifat Open Source Software (OSS). Tahapan yang dilakukan dalam penerapannya dimulai dengan studi pendahuluan, selanjutnya studi literatur digunakan untuk mencari landasan teori dan penelitian terdahulu tentang penerapan sistem ERP, mengidentifikasi proses bisnis inventory dan penjualan barang yang sedang berjalan kemudian membuatkan usulan sistem secara terkomputerisasi, yang digambarkan dengan menggunakan Business Process Model Notation (BPMN), serta penggambaran model kerja sistem yang akan diterapkan menggunakan use case diagram. Kemudian tahapan selanjutnya adalah melakukan analisis pemilihan Aplikasi ERP OSS, penerapan aplikasi dan pengujian aplikasi. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa aplikasi ERP OSS yang dipilih dapat memberikan solusi terhadap permasalahan yang dihadapi toko Handphone Nahda Cell.

Disruptive business models, such as software as a service and open source software, have made Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) packages and related software more accessible for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). However, the consulting required to configure an ERP to meet the specific needs of an organization remains a major financial burden for SMEs. One configuration task which is common to many ERPs is category configuration. With the help of automated category configuration support, managers of small businesses can perform category configuration on their own and reduce part of the consulting cost. This paper presents the design of a generic automation approach for ERP category configuration, its implementation and its application to the open source ERP package ERP5. The approach is based on similarity of example data, automatic vocabulary consolidation through Wikipedia redirects and (meta-) templates. The empirical evaluation through a laboratory experiment with one hundred test persons and a survey supports the validity, effectiveness and utility of the designed artefact.
