Abstract. Surge-type glaciers repeat their short active phase and much longer quiescent phase usually every several decades or longer, but detailed observations of the evolution cycles have been limited to a few glaciers. Here we report three surging episodes in 1989, 2001, and 2013 at Donjek Glacier in the Yukon, indicating remarkably regular and short repeat cycles of 12 years. The surging area is limited within the ~ 20 km section from the terminus, where the flow width significantly narrows than upstream, suggesting a strong control of the valley constriction on the surge dynamics.

AbstractWe present recent photometric observations of Z And, BF Cyg, and AX Per made in the standard Johnson UBVR system. The main characteristics of their light behavior can be summarized as follows: Z And: our observations cover the recent active phase, from its maximum in 2000 December to the latest measurements (2003 September). BF Cyg: the minimum of the recent wave in the star’s brightness was the deepest ever observed; in 2003 February a short-term flare developed in the light curve. AX Per: from 1995 October the light curve displays signatures of a quiescent phase of the star; in 2003 May a 0.5 mag flare was detected.

ABSTRACT We present an analysis of the XMM-Newton observations of the symbiotic recurrent nova T CrB, obtained during its active phase which started in 2014–2015. The XMM-Newton spectra of T CrB have two prominent components: a soft one (0.2–0.6 keV), well represented by blackbody emission, and a heavily absorbed hard component (2–10 keV), well matched by optically-thin plasma emission with high temperature (kT ≈ 8 keV). The XMM-Newton observations reveal evolution of the X-ray emission from T CrB in its active phase. Namely, the soft component in its spectrum is decreasing with time, while the opposite is true for the hard component. Comparison with data obtained in the quiescent phase shows that the soft component is typical only for the active phase, while the hard component is present in both phases but it is considerably stronger in the quiescent phase. Presence of stochastic variability (flickering) on time-scales of minutes and hours is confirmed both in X-rays and UV (UVM2 filter of the XMM-Newton optical monitor). On the other hand, periodic variability of 6000–6500 s is found for the first time in the soft X-ray emission (0.2–0.6 keV) from T CrB. We associate this periodic variability with the rotational period of the white dwarf in this symbiotic binary.

Heterogeneous catalysts, used in industry for the production of fuels and chemicals, are microporous solids characterized by a high internal surface area. The catalyticly active sites may occur at the surface of the bulk solid or of small crystallites deposited on a porous support. An example of the former case would be a zeolite, and of the latter, a supported metal catalyst. Since the activity and selectivity of a catalyst are known to be a function of surface composition and structure, it is highly desirable to characterize catalyst surfaces with atomic scale resolution. Where the active phase is dispersed on a support, it is also important to know the dispersion of the deposited phase, as well as its structural and compositional uniformity, the latter characteristics being particularly important in the case of multicomponent catalysts. Knowledge of the pore size and shape is also important, since these can influence the transport of reactants and products through a catalyst and the dynamics of catalyst deactivation.

ABSTRACT A study of calcium and phosphorus metabolism has been carried out on 13 acromegalic patients, in various stages of the disease. This study was repeated in nine patients following implantation of the pituitary gland with 90Y and in another two patients after deep X-ray therapy and suction removal of a pituitary adenoma respectively. Increased urinary calcium and phosphorus excretion was found in all the patients in whom the disease was in an active phase of evolution. The calcium tolerance test revealed a marked decrease of calcium retention in certain subjects, while in others, calcium retention was found to be increased. Such changes were not found in patients in whom the disease was in a quiescent phase. The blood calcium, phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase were found to be either normal or slightly increased. The implantation of the pituitary gland with 90Y and deep X-ray therapy induced a marked decrease of hypercalciuria, both spontaneous and induced, and of hyperphosphaturia, together with a definite improvement, of the clinical picture and glucose metabolism. It is concluded that the changes in calcium and phosphorus metabolism described above depend either directly or indirectly on a pituitary factor. They may therefore prove a reliable index for assessing pituitary growth hormone activity.

This is an experimental trial to prepare a vaccine from gamma-irradiated Giardia lamblia which is evaluated in experimental animals. The study was conducted from December 2015 to April 2016. The field survey of the parasite was conducted from those patients attending the laboratories of the Alawi Children's Hospital in Rusafa and the Al-Yarmouk Teaching Hospital in Karkh, through which 1250 stool samples of different age groups were examined. Five groups of mice were used in the study; the first was injected with normal saline and considered as a negative control group, the second was injected with cystic form of non-irradiated Giardia lamblia and considered as a positive control group, whereas the other three groups were injected with gamma irradiated Giardia lamblia at three different doses 10, 15 and 25 rad respectively. Giardia lamblia was primarily cultivated in liver infusion agar for ten days to obtain the active phase. On the sixth day, the cystic phase was purified and standardized to be used in the infection of mice with or without the exposure of gamma rays. Mice showed high sensitivity to parasitic infestation, in the gamma non-irradiated and the irradiated with gamma 10 rad, and 15 rad irradiated groups which was 100%. The results expressed an excystation process of the depleted phases and the release of the feeder phases. The results of the three irradiated groups consisted of histopathological changes of the small, and the rectum by dissection after two weeks of infection, with intestine amputation lesions, as well as ulceration and inflammation of the inflammatory cells represented in small numbers of neutrophil, lymphocytes, and eosinophils. The presence of ulceration and fall of epithelial cells in the intestinal cavity has been shown, and different forms of the parasite have been observed. Mice which was injected with irradiated G lamblia at high dose (25 rad), not show and sensitivity to the challenge infection and no excystation of thy parasite had been done. After 2 wreaks, a comparison was achieved between all study groups in which no histopathological changes were noticed in the mice irradiated with dose of25 rad. After another two weeks, a challenge dose was given (un-attenuated G lamblia) and mice were dissected after another two weeks, no changes on the level of histopathology of intestinal tissue were noticed the results suggested that mice acquire an immunity against the parasite infection.
