Professionalism in Using Online Social Networking Tool: An Assessment of LIS Students’ Facebook Profiles

With the advent of social media, students must not only be aware of professionalism in their face to face interactions, but also in the electronic environment. The aim of this study was to assess the level of online professionalism on Facebook profiles publicly accessible by students. A research was carried out through a new Facebook account of all students at the Institute of Information Sciences, Noakhali Science and Technology University. Demographic details and photographs / comments of unprofessional behavior were recorded for each individual Facebook profile. There was a little alarming level of unprofessional content visible on student Facebook profiles. Students should be fully aware of their professional responsibility in the context of using social media.

The legal authorities, particularly the police force, have been increasingly facing challenges given the popularity of social media [1, 2]. However, we know very little about how public perceptions of the police are being shaped by social media. In this context, this study attempted to investigate the impact of social media on young people’s perceptions of the police in Hong Kong. The focus of this study was placed on Facebook since it was one of the most popular social media platforms in the city. Facebook was not only conceptualized as a communication medium but also a social networking arena. In this connection, qualitative individual interviews were conducted to explore the online social networking on Facebook and its relation to the perceptions of police force. It was found that the Facebook users who were more likely to stay closely connected with other users with similar views would tend to form the politicized perception of police force. On the other hand, the Facebook users who were to be networked with some other users or real persons with dissimilar views would hold more neutral perceptions of the police. This study was the first of its kind to investigate the role of online social networking in the perceptions of the police, thus filling an important gap in our knowledge of the increasing impact of social media. Therefore, the results of current study were expected to contribute to society by avoiding the disproportionate public discourse about law and order. The web 2.0 practices of user participation and experimentation have created models for social networking that influence the way people communicate and interact online. This chapter describes an initiative, OLnet, that is creating a technical environment based on web 2.0 principles to support the sharing of experiences around the design and use of Open Educational Resources (OER) in order to facilitate closer links between researchers and users. The aim is to combine online functionality, face-to-face events and research activities so that research outputs can inform users and users can help steer future areas for research work. This chapter sets out the challenges and background that have motivated OLnet before looking at two of the tools that form part of the initial OLnet technical infrastructure; a tool for visualising OER designs – CompendiumLD, and a social networking tool for exchange of ideas – Cloudworks.

This chapter presents information on the usages and intent of social media by college students and administrators. Primary and secondary quantitative data is provided, as well as qualitative information obtained from interviews of multiple constituents. Researchers and postsecondary employees can more effectively examine technological trends in regard to online social networking for non-academic purposes after considering this data. Theories of self-esteem, interpersonal communication, decision making, and innovation diffusion are integrated throughout the chapter.

Social media play important roles in creating a person's sense of reality, recreating face-to-face interactions on the web by allowing people to interact either publicly of privately. Social networking sites helps in maintaining relationship with individuals who may not be closer to one; used to express romantic relationships through profile pictures or posts on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Uber Social etc. This chapter focused on the influence of Facebook on communication between emerging adults in dating relationships. A total of seventy-seven participants comprising students from the University of Lagos, Nigeria aged between 19 and 29 years, took part in different focus group discussions. Data was analyzed using thematic analysis. The results revealed that majority of the dating couples spent long hours on Facebook daily and they did not feel comfortable with the hours spent on Facebook by their partner chatting with friends on a regular basis.

Teenager’s activities in the online social networks, influenced by the nature of teenager’s characteristic who tends to look for a good impression from others. This study examined the effects of coping strategies and self-esteem on the teenagers’ self-disclosure on online social networking. In total, 185 adolescents participated the study; they were identified using the purposive sampling. The sample characteristics were having a social media account and an active user of social media. The Revised Self-Disclosure Scale, the Self-Esteem Scale, and the Ways of Coping Checklist were used to collect data.  The results of regression analysis showed that there is a positive and significant correlation of coping strategies and self-esteem on adolescents’ disclosure in online social networking.


Social media is one of the most influential tool for sharing information across different regions among different users .The people sharing their interests in various aspects in online social networking platforms like Facebook, twitter etc. Therefore the usage of hate text steadily increasing. Nowadays it has been reviled unfair behavior of the users in social networking sites. The existence of abusive text on different online social networking platforms and identification of such text is a big challenging task. To understand the complexity of language constructs in different languages is very difficult .Already lot of research work has completed in English language. This paper gives detail analysis of detecting hate text in various languages Hindi, urdu, Arabic, Bengali, Telugu. We incorporated various kinds of ML and DL based algorithms to identify hate text in OSN’s. A review is done related to different classifiers where a comparison made between different models of ML, DL algorithms. Finally finds the accurate method to classify the text is offensive or not by finding the parameters i.e. accuracy and F1score

Abstract Online social networking platforms allow people to freely express their ideas, opinions, and emotions negatively or positively. Previous studies have examined user’s sentiments on these platforms to study their behaviour in different contexts and purposes. The mechanism of collecting public opinion information has attracted researchers to automatically classify the polarity of public opinions based on the use of concise language in messages, such as tweets, by analyzing social media data. In this paper, we extend the preceding work [1], by proposing an unsupervised approach to automatically detect extreme opinions/posts in social networks. We have evaluated our performance on five different social network and media datasets. In this work, we use the semi-supervised approach BERT to check the accuracy of our classified dataset. The latter task shows that, in these datasets, posts that were previously classified as negative or positive are, in fact, extremely negative or positive in many cases.
