This qualitative research using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) explores the brand experience of Recoletos Education in the Philippines. Two levels of interpretation are generated: that of the participants who make sense of their brand experience as lived experience and that of the researcher who makes sense of the participants’ interpretations. Validated transcripts from in-depth interviews reveal the participants’ convergent and divergent interpretations of their brand experience. Rigid thematic analysis helps construct a master table of themes with four superordinate themes expressed through metaphors: the house on rock, the shepherd with his flock, the good fruit, and the strong winds and the big waves, and these, in turn, correspond to brand attributes, synergy and strategy, brand experience dimensions, and brand challenges, respectively. Finally, these themes reveal and comprise the single overarching theme: the key elements in the brand landscape of Recoletos Education.

This interpretative phenomenological analysis explores the brand experience of Recoletos Education in the Philippines. The four participants chosen via life history homogeneous purposeful sampling have at least 25 years of connection with a Recoletos school. Validated transcripts from in-depth interviews reveal the participants’ convergent and divergent interpretations of their brand experience. Inspired by scriptural narratives, themes insinuate the evangelizing dimension of Recoletos Education as a Catholic school brand. Finally, they also bring about correspondence with brand attributes, synergy and strategy, brand experience dimensions, and brand challenges, respectively, as they also, at the same time, comprise and reveal the single overarching theme: the key elements in the brand landscape of Recoletos Education.

This paper describes a phenomenological study in which the authors explored students’ experiences learning qualitative research in a variety of academic fields. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with six participants from various academic fields who had completed at least one post-secondary-school-level qualitative research course and who were not students of the researchers. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), the researchers identified five primary themes representing the lived experience and meaning found in the participants’ experience of learning qualitative research: (a) a variety of feelings are experienced, (b) a pivotal experience serves as a catalyst in the learning process, (c) the central role of story, (d) active learning, and (e) relating learning to prior knowledge. The findings both support and contribute new aspects to the knowledge of this experience. The results also point to “building connections” as the essence of the phenomenon of learning qualitative research.

Distress and depression often go unrecognised in people with diabetes. In this article, I present an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of the lived experience of people with Type 2 diabetes, based on individual in-depth interviews with 10 patients. The purpose of this research was to gain a deeper understanding of these psychological symptoms through a detailed examination of how patients interpret and respond to their experience of the condition. I propose a revised model for the connection between the disease of diabetes and patients’ lived experiences of illness, as one of embodied coexistence rather than relation. Through my analysis, I identify the psychological processes that might need to be addressed in an effective preventative support system.

Background: Caring for people with post-pasung (post seclusion and restraint of patient) mental disorders can provide special experience for families who act as caregivers. Objective: To explore family experiences in rehabilitating people with post-pasung mental disorders in Trenggalek Regency. Methods: This research is a qualitative research with an interpretive phenomenological approach. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews using semi-structured interview guidelines. Participants in this study were twelve in number who treated people with post-pasung mental disorders in Trenggalek Regency. Results: Analysis of data using IPA (Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis), found eight themes, namely having compassion for patients, having the responsibility of caring for patients, repaying the kindness of patients and others who have helped, having the hope that patients can recover, feel the need to supervise the independence of patients, realize the condition of mental patients, resigned to accept, thankful that the patient can improve and upset. Conclusion: Family is a determinant of the success of rehabilitation in people with post-pasung mental disorders. Family compassion and attention support the patient's recovery. The family hopes that the patient can recover and be independent in self-care, take medicine and work so that it does not depend on the family. This study produced eight themes and answered the research objectives.

This study focused on the phenomenology of covering a natural disaster by documenting the lived experience of 12 national and local journalists who covered Typhoon Haiyan when it hit the Philippines in November 2013. Studies that focused on journalists who covered natural disasters have identified their experiences as either journalists trying to balance their norms or as victims dealing with trauma. Our analysis brings these experiences together for a more holistic description of the experience of covering a natural disaster, arguing that one aspect of the experience cannot be understood without the other. Through an interpretative phenomenological analysis, this study found that the journalists experienced the storm as journalists, leaders, victims, and as community members. Such experiences were marked by liminal gaps, with one experience affecting the other.

The Aeta tribe is one of the most widespread ethnic groups in the Philippines. They are known for their distinct identities and culture, which reflect deep-rooted traditions from their ancestors. Changing time and the emergence of new technologies have impacted the way Aeta lives and created unique changes for establishing and maintaining relationships among the members of the tribes. This research aimed to explore the influence of online technology on the life of selected Aeta natives in the Province of Pampanga. It used Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), a qualitative research approach where researchers carefully explored how participants made sense of their experiences. Results of the study revealed the major themes on the impact of online technology on the life of Aetas: (1) facilitate connection and maintain meaningful ties; (2) mindfulness of the gadget use; and (3) nurtures life. In conclusion, Aeta used online technology to assist them in their lives, making it less demanding yet meaningful, that there is no attempt to modernize their identity and achieve personal control with minimal reliance on online technology. Online technology cannot ultimately change the distinctiveness of Aetas’ cohesive behavior.

Chapter 9 of Performing Music Research introduces the characteristics of qualitative analysis, focusing on the interpretative role of the researcher. Given that large volumes of information are typically collected in qualitative enquiry, the chapter presents ways of organizing and storing data and discusses the strengths and limitations of computer-assisted analysis. It goes on to discuss three types of qualitative analysis: thematic analysis, suitable for identifying patterns of meaning across data collected from multiple participants; interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), suitable for understanding the lived experience of individual participants; and qualitative synthesis, suitable for developing a holistic account based on a synthesis of the data. Throughout, the chapter explains how to report qualitative results efficiently and effectively.

This study aimed to explore lived experience of patients with heart failure (HF) during the COVID-19 pandemic. A qualitative study was conducted using an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Data collection performed in March-May 2020, using in-depth, semi-structured interviews on a purposive sample. Data were analyzed according to the IPA methodology, and triangulation, bracketing, journaling, and member checking were used to assure rigor. 14 patients with HF were enrolled, and three main themes described their lived experience during the COVID-19 pandemic: Vulnerability, Hanging in the balance, and Coping strategies. These people felt particularly vulnerable to the novel virus and experienced uncertainty due to hospital organization changes. Because of this, they felt like they were hanging in the balance, experiencing various negative feelings. Nevertheless, they managed to deal with this challenging situation by implementing some peculiar coping strategies. The COVID-19 represents a significant challenge for patients with HF, impacting significantly on their lives.

This study explored the experience of young adults having a parent with young-onset dementia. In-depth interviews were undertaken with five participants aged between 23 and 36 years of age and these were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Participants were found to experience a number of stresses in relation to their parent’s illness, many of which were linked to loss and guilt. Five main themes were identified related to relationship changes, shifts in roles and responsibilities, support for the non-affected parent, support for self and the impact of living with their own potential risk of dementia. These findings are discussed in relation to the existing literature and suggest that individuals with a parent with young-onset dementia have needs which service providers should consider in the wider context of young-onset dementia care.
